McRae lauds Magpies' spirit after epic AFL loss to Cats
Craig McRae has lauded his players as winners, even though their six-game AFL streak is over.
He was rapt with how they handled the end of Saturday night's epic three-point loss to Geelong, rallying around Jack Crisp when he missed his shot at goal after the siren.
It would have been a fairytale finish had he kicked accurately, given Crisp was playing in his 245th-consecutive match.
That broke the long-standing AFL record, set by Melbourne great Jim Stynes.
Collingwood players and also some Cats opponents immediately went to Crisp after his crucial kick only scored a behind.
"When he misses that kick, just look at the response of our team. It's testament to the character and culture that we have," McRae said after the agonising 13.12 (90) to 12.15 (87) loss.
"We look like winners, regardless of what the scoreboard said."
Crisp said the support he received made him emotional.
"I definitely feel a lot of love, everyone getting around me, especially Geelong players as well. It nearly brought a tear to my eye," he told Fox Footy.

His shot at goal after the siren capped a frenetic finish to the game, with the Magpies kicking two late goals to nearly steal the win
There was also controversy, with Collingwood's Bobby Hill running down Shaun Mannagh in the last few minutes, only to be penalised for legging him.
"Bobby was probably a little bit stiff," McRae said.
Collingwood star Nick Daicos gave away a 50m penalty in the last term, his frustration showing after a solid tag from Oisin Mullin.
Daicos still had 28 possessions, but only three in the final term.
"He (Mullin) did a great job. It's hard to stop Nick and we're trying to move him to places where he has influence on the game," McRae said.
"It's just what happens now when you become this player.
"This is all just part of his learning."
Collingwood have a five-day break before playing Fremantle in Perth and McRae said they are planning accordingly. Jeremy Howe was rested for the Geelong game and other veterans are likely to not make the trip.
"Watch this space this week. We've been a bit deliberate in that ... five-day breaks are hard," McRae said.

Cats pounce on Bombers to charge into AFL top two
Jeremy Cameron and Bailey Smith have put injury-ravaged Essendon to the sword as Geelong leapt into second place on the AFL ladder with an imposing 95-point thrashing. The Cats' multi-pronged attack fired as they nudged out to a 23-point lead at quarter-time and never looked back. Cameron monstered Jayden Laverde to kick six goals in Saturday's 23.13 (151) to 8.8 (56) win at the MCG to reach 44 for the season and pull clear of GWS spearhead Jesse Hogan (38) in the Coleman Medal race. Brownlow Medal contender Smith showed no signs of the hamstring tightness that sidelined him against West Coast. The gun recruit racked up 24 disposals in the first half and finished with 41 plus 760 metres gained as he and Max Holmes (873 metres gained, 36 disposals) continued their dynamic midfield partnership. Shannon Neale (four goals) and Shaun Mannagh (three) chipped in, and skipper Patrick Dangerfield (two goals, 10 score involvements) was a constant threat as Geelong monstered Essendon's undermanned and undersized defence. The win came at a cost for Chris Scott's Cats, with key defender Sam De Koning substituted in the third quarter after injuring his left shoulder early in the game. Brad Scott's Bombers are still three to four weeks away from regaining the likes of injured Jordan Ridley, Zach Reid, Kyle Langford and Mason Redman. Ben McKay (foot) also remains sidelined, while Sam Draper is among four players done for the season. The gulf in class was evident and Geelong will feel exceptionally confident heading into Friday's blockbuster against reigning premiers Brisbane at GMHBA Stadium. Essendon haven't beaten Geelong since 2018 and have defeated the Cats just four times over the past 20 years. Jezza wasted no time snapping his sixth 😼#AFLDonsCats — AFL (@AFL) June 14, 2025 Essendon ruck Todd Goldstein (30 hitouts, 20 disposals) battled hard, while Will Setterfield (31 disposals) and Jye Caldwell (28 disposals) were busy and skipper Zach Merrett (29 disposals) was typically prolific. Cameron, Neale and Mannagh kicked two goals apiece in the first term to Essendon's two as the Cats punished the Bombers' turnovers. Essendon have kicked two goals or fewer in the first quarter of their past five games. The Cats led by 35 points at halftime, and despite Essendon spearhead Peter Wright booting the first goal of the second half, Geelong were unfazed and kicked five of the next six majors to tighten their grip on the contest. The final quarter proved a formality as the Cats drilled home seven goals while keeping Essendon goalless. The Bombers, now on a three-game losing streak, face Fremantle at Optus Stadium on Thursday.

Port Adelaide shake off sickness ahead of Dees clash
Port Adelaide are confident they have shaken off a flu that hit players and coach Ken Hinkley in time to fire in their crunch clash with Melbourne. Hinkley was isolated from the rest of his coaching staff early in the week but has recovered. Port ruled veteran Travis Boak out of Sunday's match at Adelaide Oval with illness but key defender Aliir Aliir, who was also sick, has been cleared to play. "I only missed out of precaution," Hinkley said. "We learned some good stuff out of COVID. We learned that when there's illness around you, you isolate, and it actually helps protect other people. "There's been two or three (players) that have been, again, a bit similar to myself. We've been cautious with people and not allowing them to get other people unwell if we can avoid that. "At this stage, everyone that's available that's been picked will certainly take the field tomorrow." The Power have regained Jason Horne-Francis from a hamstring injury while Melbourne's Jack Viney returns from concussion. Mid-season recruit Mani Liddy - a former air conditioning mechanic who wears a distinctive leg sleeve to protect scarring from a nasty injury last year - will debut. no more temu leg sleeves for mani 🙏 — Port Adelaide FC (@PAFC) June 13, 2025 Jordon Sweet has been recalled to team up with Dante Visentini against brilliant Melbourne ruckman Max Gawn. "We are coming up against the best ruck in the competition for the past 10 years," Hinkley said of Gawn. "We accept it is a big challenge for our rucks. Our forwards have not been able to do enough or as much as they need to do. "So when you come up against the quality of Max Gawn we acknowledge that and we put another ruck in and see whether that can help us and get another different-looking target in the forward line at times. "We certainly won't concede to Max, but we know that to limit him is going to be influential in the outcome of the game." Hinkley is refusing to buy into the importance of the clash, the first of three consecutive home games. Port (5-7) host Melbourne, Sydney and Carlton in coming weeks. "Don't take anything for granted," Hinkley said. "This game smacked me in the face enough to know that any time you try and take anything that looks maybe a little bit more positive than the other (it will hurt you). "Going to Canberra last week, playing in Saturday night, cold conditions ... it wasn't a great outlook, but we went there and won. "And that's what we've got to do tomorrow. We've got to turn up tomorrow at Adelaide Oval with our fans here and make sure we win."

Hawks star kicks late winner to sink wayward Crows
Jai Newcombe has overcome a dirty first half to kick the match-winning goal in Hawthorn's scrappy three-point AFL win over Adelaide in Launceston. Newcombe tallied just five disposals in the opening two terms of Friday night's clash under the tight attention of Sam Berry. But the 23-year-old was in the right place at the right time when the game was up for grabs, with a Mabior Chol tap-on and a Jack Gunston handball finding Newcombe in the goal square for the go-ahead goal with less than four minutes remaining. Hawthorn held on grimly from that point on to secure the 6.11 (47) to 5.14 (44) win. HAWKS BACK IN FRONT 🙌#AFLHawksCrows — AFL (@AFL) June 13, 2025 The brave victory in cold and slippery conditions marked Hawthorn's eighth straight win in Launceston and improved their season record to 9-5. Adelaide slipped to 9-5, and they only had themselves to blame given they dominated for large parts of the game but failed to finish off their good work. Taylor Walker and Riley Thilthorpe kicked three behinds apiece, with Josh Rachele (0.2) also failing to score a goal. Adelaide only kicked one major in the second half. Jarman Impey was critical in Hawthorn's victory with 28 disposals and 756m gained, while Jack Gunston kicked two goals and set up Newcombe for the match-winner. Newcombe only finished with 15 disposals and three clearances, but his team walked away with the win. Adelaide dominated a host of key stats in the opening quarter, winning the inside 50m battle 18-9, clearances 11-6 and contested possessions 44-31 on the way to a two-goals-to-nil term. Isaac Cumming's one-handed mark, which led to Adelaide's second goal, and a brilliant chase-down tackle from Josh Worrell on Hawthorn's Nick Watson were the biggest highlights. WHAT A CHASE FROM WORRELL 👏#AFLHawksCrows — AFL (@AFL) June 13, 2025 Hawthorn were error-riddled and second to the ball in the opening quarter, with Newcombe restricted to just two disposals by Berry. Gunston finally broke the Hawks' goal drought early in the second quarter, and he also nailed a 45m set shot later in the term against the run of play to ensure the deficit was only 15 points at halftime. Hawthorn lifted their intensity in the third quarter, and early goals to Connor Macdonald and Chol made it a one-kick game. Adelaide were held goalless for the term, and it was just four points the margin at the final change. Adelaide's Mitch Hinge gave away a 50m penalty early in the last quarter and then was lucky not to give away another for headbutting Dylan Moore in the shoulder in a moment of madness. Gunston missed three set shots in the last term - the third from just 30m out - before Impey's surge forward set up Macdonald for a major. That goal gave Hawthorn a three-point lead with seven minutes remaining, but Izak Rankine hit back a minute later with a brilliant checkside off the outside of his boot. In a thrilling finish, Newcombe put Hawthorn back ahead, with the Crows' desperate bid to snatch victory falling short.
