Kolkata: A senior pharmaceutical company official from Kolkata lost over Rs 1.1 crore in a fake kola nut online trading scam. Kola nuts have various uses in the pharmaceutical industry.
The cyber crooks used the name of a top UK-based pharmaceutical company, created their fake website and trademark to dupe the official, a resident of Hiland Willows in Newtown.
The victim alleged the fraudsters orchestrated a two-week-long scheme using forged documents.
On May 1, he allegedly received an email, mimicking the original email address of the company. The sender of the email presented lucrative business opportunities in kola nut trading. The frauds expanded their communication to WhatsApp, using international numbers. They introduced Guha to persons claiming to be kola nut sellers from northeast, who contacted him using Indian numbers. The fraudsters initially delivered small quantities of kola nuts to gain his trust.
Guha transferred the swindled amount to various bank accounts, only to be duped.

Delhi Police bust fake Noida call centre, nab 8

The Delhi Police Friday busted a fake call centre operating from the basement of a Noida building and arrested eight people allegedly involved in a credit card scam. The police have also seized 24 mobile phones and a diary with a log of Rs 6.5 crore of defrauded transactions. According to the police, the alleged fake call centre was being run by Vikas, 28, and Kundan Singh, 31, along with Divyam, 22, and five women – all of whom were arrested – for the last seven months. 'Upon sustained questioning, they disclosed that their telemarketers contacted individuals over the phone under the pretext of increasing their credit card limits, subsequently sending them a malicious link to collect their account details,' Sachin Sharma, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Outer, Delhi Police, said. The case came to light on March 22, when a complainant approached the Cyber Police Station (Outer), claiming that he was defrauded of Rs 6,000 after he got a call from people claiming that they could boost his credit card limit. 'The fraud was committed under the pretext of increasing his credit card limit, during which the accused obtained sensitive card details and the OTP from the victim through malicious links and fraudulent phone calls,' DCP Sharma said. After checking Internet Protocol Detail Records (IPDR), Call Detail Records (CDR), and IMEI searches of the phone number from which the complainant received a call, the police tracked the device to a building in Noida Sector-63. 'The location of the primary accused and the operational hub of the call centre was identified in the basement of Building D-60, Sector-63, Noida. A raid was subsequently conducted at the specified location,' said DCP Sharma.

Consumer panel orders Saudi-based airline to pay Rs 1.25 lakh to passenger for lost baggage

A consumer disputes redressal commission has directed an airline to pay Rs 1.25 lakh with interest for the loss of a passenger's bag. The commission also directed that the customer be paid Rs 10,000 towards compensation for mental agony. The order was passed ex partre as Flynas, a Saudi-based low-cost airline, did not send any representative during the hearing of the complaint. The incident dates back to January 2024 when the complainant was travelling back to Mumbai from Turkey. In Istanbul, the complainant handed over five bags to Flynas, but only four of them had baggage tags attached. When the complainant pointed it out, she was given a physical tag for the fifth bag with the assurance that it would be sent to the destination along with the other bags. Once they reached Mumbai, however, the fifth bag was not found. The complainant approached the airline, but the bag was not located. After unsatisfactory responses from the airline, the complainant approached the consumer commission, she told the panel. 'After going through all the facts, we observe that there was a mala fide negligence by the Flynas Airline supporting staff as well as officials who were in communication with the complainant. The opposite party didn't give any conclusive reply to the complaint raised by the complainant. The actions of the opposite party were not satisfactory in the said incidence,' the commission said in its order in April. 'The opposite party could have checked the CCTV footage to confirm the incidence and could have brought more factual report on record. However, we do not find any genuine efforts taken by the opposite party to confirm the incidence to trace the lost bag. The opposite party purposely avoided all the logical actions to find the lost bag,' it said in the detailed order made available recently. The commission further stated that there are standardised rules on compensation in baggage loss claims, namely the Montreal Convention of 1999, applicable only to international flights between countries that have ratified the convention. The commission stated that while the complainant had followed the rules in filing the complaint, the airline remained absent during the proceedings, despite being aware of them. 'Hence, we have no doubt in our mind about the negligent act of the opposite party/Flynas Airlines. The allegations of the complainant about the loss of luggage by Flynas Airlines are genuine. Hence, the complainant is entitled to claim the cost of goods due to the loss of luggage along with compensation,' the commission said.

IndiGo Places Order For Another 30 Wide-Body A350 Aircraft With Airbus

New Delhi: Low-cost airline IndiGo on Sunday announced an MoU with Airbus to enlarge its wide-body aircraft order by converting 30 aircraft of its purchase rights for 70 aircraft into a firm order. This is yet another step in defining the airline's long-term plans for international expansion. "We are placing a firm order for 30 Airbus A350-900s," said Pieter Elbers, the CEO of IndiGo. At a briefing in the national capital, Elbers said that out of the option for 70 planes, it is now placing a firm order of 30 aircraft. Last year, IndiGo took the strategic decision to induct widebody aircraft in its fleet by placing a firm order for 30 A350-900 aircraft, with purchase rights for an additional 70 aircraft. The original order's deliveries are expected to start in 2027. "We will continue to add one aircraft a week to double by the end of the decade," said the IndiGo CEO. This strategic move will enable IndiGo to spread its wings further and expand its long-haul international network, connecting Indian metros to different parts of the world. 'With this, it will create more travel options for its customers to new international destinations and also enable more flights to the hubs of its partner airlines,' the airline said in a statement. IndiGo's Airbus A350-900 aircraft will be powered by Rolls Royce's Trent XWB engine. In March 2025, IndiGo began preparing for its long-haul operations with the introduction of six temporarily leased wide-body aircraft, deliveries of which will be concluded by 2026. With its fleet of more than 400 aircraft, the airline operates around more than 2,200 daily flights.
