Shell Recharge, PRO-NET to widen EV charging network

The Sun15-05-2025

KUALA LUMPUR: Shell Recharge and Proton New Energy Technology (PRO-NET), a subsidiary of national carmaker Proton Holdings Bhd, have collaborated to simplify EV charging for Malaysian drivers.
Through this collaboration, Proton e.MAS and smart EV drivers can now locate and pay for EV charging at Shell Recharge stations nationwide via the Proton e.MAS and Hello smart apps.
This takes an important step forward in delivering a smoother, integrated, and more convenient charging experience for EV drivers and supports the Malaysian government's vision of a unified and accessible EV ecosystem.
'At Shell, we believe convenience is key to accelerating EV adoption. We recognise the need to provide EV drivers with intuitive solutions that meet their charging needs, and that is exactly what we are delivering through this collaboration with PRO-NET,' Shell Malaysia general manager, mobility & convenience Seow Lee Ming said.
'By making our sites available on PRO-NET digital platforms, EV drivers now have more ways to locate, navigate, and pay for EV charging at Shell Recharge stations nationwide.
'We strive to work with like-minded partners such as PRO-NET, in exploring opportunities to invest in smart EV solutions, while offering greater value beyond a smoother charging experience. I welcome all Proton e.MAS and smart EV drivers to experience the convenience of charging with Shell Recharge and PRO-NET.'
Shell has been actively expanding its public charging footprint nationwide, including the recently launched high-performance charging (HPC) corridor, which connects the East Coast to the West Coast of Peninsular Malaysia.
This latest integration with PRO-NET reflects Shell's broader strategy of building a more connected and inclusive EV charging network through strategic partner collaborations while contributing to national efforts to accelerate EV adoption.
PRO-NET CEO Zhang Qiang said the company' mission goes beyond delivering electric vehicles.
'We are building the future of sustainable mobility. This collaboration with Shell Recharge is another important milestone in realising that vision.
'With over 2,500 charging points now accessible through our Integrated Live Charging Map, which can be accessed both in our vehicles and through the Proton e.MAS and Hello smart apps, we are establishing an ecosystem that eliminates range anxiety.
'By working with forward-thinking partners like Shell, we are not just connecting charging networks but also connecting people to a smarter, more confident EV journey across Malaysia,' he said.

Govt committed to increase women-owned companies

KUALA LUMPUR: The percentage of women-owned companies in Malaysia are still low compared to other ASEAN countries, at about 20 per cent or 210,000 companies out of all enterprises in the country. Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz said the government through the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE) would strive to increase the percentage through various new programmes and policies. 'In helping women access overseas markets more effectively, the government is committed to providing trade facilities such as MADANI Digital Trade, Malaysia International Halal Showcase (MIHAS) and also trade missions to various countries,' he said during the opening ceremony of the Women in Export (WiEX) Forum 2025 today. Tengku Zafrul said the initiative implemented was open to women entrepreneurs who wanted to explore international markets, including emerging markets such as West Asia, Africa and Eastern Europe, which have high demand for Malaysian products. 'MATRADE also constantly monitors the participation of female entrepreneurs in international exhibitions and overseas trade missions so that women can become competitive exporters on the international stage,' he said. Meanwhile, MATRADE chairman Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican said the participation of Asian women in the economy, comprising only 30 to 35 per cent, shows that there are still untapped economic opportunities. 'Therefore, to assist women-owned companies in the export market, MATRADE has allocated 40 per cent of the RM14.89 million in export grants to 6,711 women-owned companies,' he said at the event. Regarding the organisation of WiEX, he said the forum was important as a meeting place to empower women in the export ecosystem and, by 2026, the forum would be known as the Women International Exporters Expo. 'The WiEX Forum has become the perfect platform to celebrate and recognise women entrepreneurs who want to make a name for themselves in the international arena. All the knowledge, inspiration and strategies shared today are valuable gifts that can guide their respective journeys,' he said. Therefore, Reezal Merican said MATRADE has launched an e-directory that serves as a bridge connecting products and services provided by women-owned companies. 'This platform will showcase to the world the great products and services produced by Malaysian women. It will facilitate business collaboration, build international networks and, most importantly, provide direct access to global markets. 'This initiative is in line with the National Women's Policy 2025-2030 and sustainable development goals, demonstrating the government's unwavering commitment to empowering women in the trade sector,' he added. Also present were Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, chairman of the Umno Malaysia Women's and Family Affairs Council (HAWA) Tan Sri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil and MATRADE chief executive officer Datuk Mohd Mustafa Abdul Aziz.

OpenAI probes ChatGPT service disruption

KUALA LUMPUR: Artificial intelligence firm OpenAI is investigating a major disruption to its ChatGPT service, which has left users worldwide, including in Malaysia, unable to access the popular AI chatbot today. The outage has triggered a surge of complaints on platforms like Down Detector, with over 1,400 reports in the UK and more than 1,000 in the US logged at its peak, the Sun UK reported. Malaysian users have also taken to social media to express frustration, with many saying they received random error messages when trying to access the platform. The most common error reads: "A network error occurred. Please check your connection and try again. If this issue persists, please contact us through our help centre at In other cases, users encountered a vague message that simply stated: "Hmm… something seems to have gone wrong." The Sun reported OpenAI has confirmed it is aware of the issue, stating on its official service status page that "some users are experiencing elevated error rates and latency." "We are investigating," the company said. The problems reportedly began at 9am BST (4pm Malaysian time). It remains unclear whether the disruption is limited to certain regions or systems, or if it is affecting all 400 million weekly users of the service globally.
