Teenagers, on way home from prom, lauded as heroes for helping family evacuate from fire

Three teenagers are being lauded as heroes by the Maynard Fire Department for their quick action when a family's garage caught fire and threatened to do the same to the home.
Maynard Fire Chief Jared Pearl said a group of teenagers were leaving the Whitesboro High School Junior Prom on May 17 when they saw the fire.
'Three young gentlemen were dropping off their dates after the Whitesboro Junior Prom, traveling along Cavanaugh Road, and they came across the garage fire, and by then, it was fully involved,' Pearl said.

Pearl said the teenagers were Aiden Kane, Tyler Sodja and Donato Jellenich.
The garage was detached from the building, and Pearl said the fire was so hot that it was melting the house's siding. And the family had no clue, as they were all on the other side of the house, away from the fire.
It was by sheer luck that one of their dates lived across the street.
'[Kane] ran across the street and banged on the door and told them what was happening,' Pearl said.
A father and his two daughters were inside the building. Pearl said Kane helped the girls across the street, where they were comforted by Morgan Randall. Meanwhile, Sodja checked the garage, and Jellenich called 911.
Pearl said there's a belief that the younger generations are more laid back, however, these teenagers showed different in their composure and fast-thinking actions.
'If they didn't do this, if they didn't get everyone out and call 911, it may have been three to four minutes before we got there,' Chief Pearl said. 'And by then, the house would have been fully involved.'
'They saved this family,' he concluded.

And after speaking with the youths, Pearl only had more praise.
'They were nothing but humble,' the chief said. 'They don't look at themselves as heroes. But they saved this family, and it could have gone the other way within minutes. It's outstanding.'
The Maynard Fire Department arrived on the scene shortly after the call went out and was joined by Whitesboro Fire Department. They were able to put the fire out quickly enough.
'For a horrible situation, it came together well,' Pearl said. 'And it's all because of these young kids.'

Edmonton Oilers take home ice to new level to open Stanley Cup Final
There is going to be a little extra home in the home ice for Connor McDavid & Co. when the puck drops on the Stanley Cup Finals against the Florida Panthers on Wednesday (8 p.m., CBC, Sportsnet). While the Edmonton Oilers hold the advantage thanks to a three-point difference in the standings, a new initiative by Rogers called This is Our Ice aims to bring a little slice of home to hockey's biggest stage. Ice samples from six rinks across the country where McDavid, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Stuart Skinner, Evander Kane, Darnell Nurse and Calvin Pickard played minor hockey have been collected and brought to Rogers Place to be added to the ice surface before the championship series gets underway. For Kane, that means there will be an essence of the Northshore Winter Club underneath his feet. 'Oh, really? Obviously, I didn't know that story,' the Oilers forward said at the podium during media day at Rogers Place on Tuesday. 'It's kind of cool.' Before Kane and the rest of the Oilers get a chance to earn Edmonton's sixth Stanley Cup, and first since 1990, there were plenty of milestones along the way to help them reach that point. And they all happened far away from the same type of spotlight that is set squarely on Rogers Place right now, even though they were no less important to their younger selves at the time. 'We had some great teams in minor hockey, won a Quebec tournament, Western Canadians, we had a lot of success in junior and won a lot at an early age,' said Kane, 33, who grew up in East Vancouver, and is playing for his sixth NHL team since being drafted fourth overall by the Atlanta Thrashers in 2009. 'I've always joked — you go through your youth hockey career and you kind of win everything — won a Memorial Cup (with his hometown Vancouver Giants in 2007), won a world junior (with Team Canada in 2009), all that type of stuff. 'And then you get to the NHL, and if you're a top pick you go to one of the worst teams in the NHL. So, it's tough to get used to losing, but to get to this point in my career, to be able to have a chance to win again is special and it's something I definitely don't take for granted.' Edmonton Oilers are not limping into this Stanley Cup Final against Florida Panthers
EDMONTON, Alberta — Connor McDavid is fine, and coach Kris Knoblauch expects the best hockey player in the world to be good to go for the Edmonton Oilers in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final. That is the most important thing for Edmonton gearing up for another championship series against the Florida Panthers. Also, acknowledging the notable absence of injured forward Zach Hyman, the Oilers are much closer to full strength in the rematch than they were a year ago and are not limping into the final this time around. 'We're very confident in the group that we have and the players that are available,' defenseman Darnell Nurse said after a day off the ice for players. 'There's been guys that have stepped up in huge moments so far over the course of the playoffs, and I'm sure over the course of the series we'll need more of that.' A smoother journey through the playoffs helps. Edmonton won each of its past two series in five games apiece, and that has allowed for some much-needed rest along the way. 'Are we 100% healthy? No, not quite, obviously with Hyman being out, which will be a huge loss,' Knoblauch said. 'But overall I would say we're in a little bit better position physically.' Reinforcements have also arrived just in time. Winger Evander Kane returned for Game 2 of the first round against Los Angeles after missing the entire regular season recovering from multiple surgeries to repair injuries that knocked him out of the Cup final a year ago when he needed injections just to be able to walk. Defenseman Mattias Ekholm got back in the lineup for the clinching game of the Western Conference final against Dallas after thinking several weeks earlier he wouldn't be able to play again until October. 'When doctors tell you something, they're usually right,' Ekholm said. 'Most people didn't think I was going to be in this position, so to be able to be part of this group, to be part of things on the ice and help this team win has been the goal the whole time and now that it's reality is awesome for me.' The Oilers did not win last year when they faced the Panthers, losing three in a row to start the series and clawing back to force a Game 7 only to experiencing a gut-wrenching defeat. They didn't have Kane healthy then to offset Matthew Tkachuk, Sam Bennett and Florida's hard-nosed pressure. Now they do, with Kane and Corey Perry being counted on to make up for Hyman being out. 'We can play a physical brand of hockey,' Kane said. 'We can play an in-your-face brand of hockey. Whatever game you want, we can give you. We're going to play our game, and we're looking forward to that challenge.' The Panthers are also nearly 100% after some injury scares in the East final against Carolina to clutch scorer Sam Reinhart and vastly improved defenseman Niko Mikkola. Only depth forward A.J. Greer's status is any kind of a question going in. McDavid provided some intrigue by leaving practice after five minutes and a chat with trainers. Knoblauch brushed that off, saying the three-time league MVP and reigning playoff MVP was fine and said McDavid would practice in the final preparation for the series. Connor Brown also is expected to be back for Game 1 in Edmonton after missing the conclusion of the West final. 'He adds a lot of elements to our team,' Knoblauch said. 'Obviously on the penalty kill we need him a lot, his speed, his checking. He's scored and provided some nice offense throughout the season.' Having gotten at least a goal from 19 different players during this run, the Oilers also seem mentally sharper than last year, when they were new to this stage of the playoffs going up against an opponent that had been there before. McDavid and Leon Draisaitl should keep driving the bus, but they don't need to do it all. 'This time around we have a lot more depth throughout the entirety of our lineup,' Kane said. 'If we need scoring, we have scoring. If we need some guys that can be a little bit more physical, we can be more physical. Unfortunately, we're going to have to use that depth and we're going to have to get the job done with it.'

Colorado Attack Suspect Charged With Federal Hate Crime
The man suspected of using a 'makeshift flamethrower' and throwing Molotov cocktails that burned multiple victims at the Pearl Street Mall in Boulder, Colorado, on Sunday has been charged with a federal hate crime. The suspect, identified as Mohamed Sabry Soliman, 45, is accused of throwing 'an incendiary device' into the crowd gathered at the popular outdoor mall, Mark Michalek, the special agent in charge of the Denver field office, said at a Sunday evening press conference. The FBI called the incident 'an act of terrorism.' Officials confirmed to the outlet that Soliman is an Egyptian national. According to the Department of Homeland Security, he arrived in the U.S. in 2022 through California on a non-immigrant visa, which expired in February 2023. He subsequently filed for asylum. According to the federal criminal complaint, Soliman told investigators that he had planned the attack for a year, looking up how to make Molotov cocktails online, NBC News reports. Per the complaint, there was a container holding at least 14 Molotov cocktails, and a 'backpack weed sprayer, potentially containing a flammable substance' that was found near the container. 'Soliman stated that he hated the Zionist group and did this because he hated this group and needed to stop them from taking over 'our land,' which he explained to be Palestine,' the complaint alleges. 'He stated that he had been planning the attack for a year and was waiting until after his daughter graduated to conduct the attack.' The suspect had recently been living in Colorado Springs, located in El Paso County, Colorado, where the FBI said it was 'conducting court-authorized law enforcement activity related to the attack on the Pearl Street Mall in Boulder.' A group of walkers participating in a Run for Their Lives event that was 'calling for the immediate release of the hostages held by Hamas,' according to its website, were gathered at the mall where the suspect lodged the attack. Boulder Police Chief Stephen Redfearn described it as a 'peaceful demonstration.' The suspect was heard screaming 'free Palestine,' Michalek said during the press conference Sunday night. In a statement on Instagram, Run for Their Lives noted that their walks 'have been held every week' without 'any violent incidents until today.' The organization added that 'the plight of the hostages is an international humanitarian crisis' and called on world leaders to do 'everything they can to ensure the swift return home of each of the 58 hostages.' At least eight victims were injured in the attack and ranged in age from 52 to 88, and included four women and four men, authorities said. At least one was seriously injured, and potentially in critical condition, Redfearn said Sunday. The incident occurred around 1:26 p.m. on Sunday, when Boulder dispatch received several calls reporting there was 'a man with a weapon and that people were being set on fire,' Redfearn said in an earlier afternoon press conference on Sunday. When police arrived on the scene, there were 'multiple victims' with 'injuries consistent with burns' and other injuries, which range from minor to very serious, he said. 'The Department of Justice has swiftly charged the illegal alien perpetrator of this heinous attack with a federal hate crime and will hold him accountable to the fullest extent of the law. Our prayers are with the victims and our Jewish community across the world,' U.S. Attorney General Pamela Bondi said in a statement on Monday, following the filing of the federal charge.
