Muscat: The Muscat Governorate Municipal Council held a meeting under the chairmanship of Sayyid Saud bin Hilal al Busaidy, Governor of Muscat, on Tuesday. During the meeting the council reviewed a statement from Khazaen Economic City regarding the used car market. In its statement, Khazaen Economic City affirmed that the used car market is a practical solution to the problem of random distribution of showrooms, noting that the project will regulate the market thus enabling entrepreneurs and small and medium enterprises to function within a conducive commercial environment. The project will also reduce the costs for sellers and consumers, provide qualitative benefits to consumers, improve operational efficiency and attract local and international investments. The Muscat Municipal Council also reviewed the statement of the National Employment Programme, a strategic initiative aimed at providing job opportunities for citizens. The council approved the minutes of its previous meeting and the recommendations regarding the Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning's statement on the master plan for the Greater Muscat Project. The council stressed the importance of ongoing institutional partnerships between relevant entities in the implementation of major strategic projects particularly those related to smart and sustainable city objectives. The council reviewed the Social Affairs Committee's recommendations regarding the Oman Down Syndrome Association. The council emphasized the importance of continuing integrated institutional work, providing supportive facilities to ensure the stability of services provided, and coordinating with relevant authorities to enhance the effectiveness of current programmes and reduce operational burdens that may hamper the continuation of specialized community activities. The council also reviewed a number of letters from relevant authorities on topics related to planning and regulatory aspects. Court finds Australia's ABC wrongly fired journalist over Gaza post
Australia's public broadcaster ABC unlawfully dismissed a radio journalist over a social media post related to the Israel-Gaza conflict, a court found Wednesday. ABC apologised after being ordered to pay Antoinette Lattouf Aus$70,000 (US$45,000) in compensation, with a further financial penalty yet to be decided. The broadcaster broke employment law by terminating her "for reasons including that she held political opinions opposing the Israeli military campaign in Gaza", Federal Court Justice Darryl Rangiah said in his ruling. Lattouf took legal action after being dismissed in December 2023, three days into a five-day casual contract with the ABC. She had re-posted to Instagram a Human Rights Watch video report on the Gaza conflict with the comment: "HRW reporting starvation as a tool of war". ABC senior management's consternation over the post turned into a "state of panic", the judge said, and a decision was made to take her off the air "within the hour".

Seven Israeli soldiers killed in Gaza as Palestinian death toll mounts
Seven Israeli soldiers have been killed in fighting in southern Gaza, the military said on Wednesday, as the Palestinian death toll in the enclave continued to mount. Israeli media reported that six soldiers and a platoon commander were killed in the city of Khan Younis when an explosive device planted on their vehicle was detonated. In a separate incident, another soldier was severely wounded, the military added. Six of the dead soldiers were named by the army, while the family of one withheld his identity. Their deaths came as the Palestinian death toll from the war continued to rise, with at least 90 Gazans killed between dawn on Tuesday and Wednesday morning, according to official Palestinian media. Fifty-six people were killed while queuing to receive aid, news agency Wafa said. Israel imposed a two-month blockade on Gaza in early March that has created famine-like conditions in the enclave, according to rights groups. It lifted the blockade last month with the launch of a new aid group to distribute supplies, the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation. But aid sites run by the private American contractor, with US and Israeli government support, have been plagued by violence and chaos. The distribution points are in Israeli military zones, forcing civilians to navigate dangerous areas. Gaza's Health Ministry says Israel's 20-month military operation in Gaza has killed 56,077 people in the strip. The October 7 attack killed about 1,200 Israelis, mostly civilians, and saw 251 others taken hostage. Many of the hostages have been released during ceasefires or through other agreements. The war has displaced nearly all of Gaza's 2.3 million people while triggering a hunger and health crisis in the enclave.
