Vietnam launches crackdown on counterfeits amid US pressure

Fashion United7 hours ago

Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Gucci… Tran Le Chi loved fashion, but the US customs crackdown wreaked havoc on her wardrobe of counterfeits 'made in Vietnam,' caught in Washington's crosshairs.
'Clothes help me look trendy,' explained the 53-year-old woman, who sells illegal lottery tickets in Hanoi, the Vietnamese capital. 'What does it matter to me whether it's fake or not?' she stated.
Chi openly admitted to wearing counterfeits, which never cost her more than one million dong each. 'The real products are not for people like us,' she declared.
Vietnam has become one of the world's largest hubs for clothing and footwear production, attracting international brands with its abundant and cheap labour force.
However, the communist country is also a hotspot for counterfeiting — a fact that has not gone unnoticed by its main client, the US, which is increasingly concerned about the influx of fakes into its market.
This issue has taken centre stage in ongoing talks between Hanoi and Washington, with the US threatening to impose a 46 percent customs duty on products imported from Vietnam as part of a protectionist push to rebalance trade in its favour. Repression
'I never cheated anyone,' defended Hoa, who runs a shop in Hanoi's Old Quarter selling fake Nike, Lacoste, and North Face products made in China but stamped 'made in Vietnam' to appear genuine. Her clients, she claimed, buy fully aware of what they are purchasing. Speaking under a pseudonym, Hoa described the crackdown launched by the communist government, scheduled to last until mid-August, which has led to the closure of sales sites in both Hanoi (north) and Ho Chi Minh City (south).
Among the targets was the Saigon Square shopping centre in Ho Chi Minh City's tourist district, identified by American authorities as one of the world's most important physical markets for counterfeits. A 2024 report by the White House's United States Trade Representative (USTR) noted that 'weak penalties had little deterrent effect' and that counterfeits 'remained widespread.'
Authorities seized approximately 1,000 fake Rolex watches in the first five months of the year at this mall, located just opposite the modern Saigon Centre—an American-style complex with shops, a hotel, restaurants, and offices, representing its antithesis.
Between January and May, Vietnam confiscated more than 7,000 counterfeit products valued at eight million dollars, an official from the national market surveillance agency stated in mid-June. Around 53 cases have been transferred to the police for investigation. Fake socks
In Hanoi, law enforcement discovered over 25,000 fake speakers from the British brand Marshall, smartwatches, and pseudo-Japanese vacuum cleaners. A man was arrested at the end of May for selling more than 200,000 pairs of socks bearing Adidas, Nike, and Uniqlo logos—priced at less than 20 euro cents each.
In another case, police arrested a man accused of buying six tonnes of confectionery from China and repackaging it to appear as if it originated from Japan or South Korea by altering expiry dates.
Vietnam has pledged to strengthen controls over the origin of goods sold abroad. Washington has accused Hanoi of lax enforcement against transhipment fraud, which allegedly enables Chinese products, subject to stricter customs duties, to enter the US via Vietnam.
The crackdown on counterfeiting 'plays a role in the strategy adopted by Vietnam to appease the US,' believes Nguyen Khac Giang, a Vietnamese researcher based in Singapore. Meanwhile, Hoa had to close her shop two weeks ago amid fears of police raids.
'I sold these kinds of clothes for a decade without problems,' she said. 'Now they are targeting us, and it's hard to imagine how I'm going to continue.' This article was translated to English using an AI tool.

Mike Lynch's tragic superyacht to be finally raised from Sicily seabed this weekend

A British superyacht, which tragically sank off Sicily last August claiming seven lives, including that of UK tech magnate Mike Lynch, is scheduled to be recovered from the seabed this weekend. The vessel, a British-flagged superyacht, has been submerged since the incident. The complex salvage operation saw a significant breakthrough with the removal of the yacht's 72-meter (236-foot) mast. This crucial step allowed the hull to be brought to a nearly upright position, accelerating the overall recovery schedule by approximately a week. The mast itself has been left on the seabed for future retrieval. TMC Marine, the salvage company overseeing the operation, confirmed that the vessel is set to be lifted from a depth of 50 meters (164 feet) by a powerful maritime floating crane barge on Saturday, weather permitting. The superyacht is then expected to be brought to port by Monday. Lifting the 56-meter (184-foot) Bayesian requires the installation of eight main steel lifting straps, along with four previously installed, the company said. During the recent operations, salvage crews removed a life raft and deck furniture, which were brought to the port. TMC has previously recovered suspected debris from the seabed using a remote-controlled submersible. Marine salvage experts began the operation in early May to recover the superyacht, but the operation was temporarily halted after a diver's death a few days later. A new recovery plan was approved last week. British investigators in an interim report issued last month said that the yacht was knocked over by 'extreme wind' and couldn't recover. The report stated that the Bayesian had chosen the site where it sank as shelter from forecast thunderstorms. Wind speeds exceeded 70 knots (81 mph.) at the time of the sinking at 4:06 a.m. on Aug. 19 and 'violently' knocked the vessel over to a 90-degree angle in under 15 seconds. Italian authorities are conducting a full criminal investigation. Billionaire entrepreneur Lynch, 59, and his daughter Hannah, 18, were among the dead when the Bayesian sank. Fifteen people survived. The boat trip was a celebration of Lynch's acquittal in a fraud case in the U.S. in June. Fifteen people survived the accident.

More info A new sushi restaurant is set to open in the West End, filling a previously empty shopfront on the city centre street. Umi is coming soon to Shandwick Place, occupying the former premises of Bar Burrito at 6 Shandwick Place between Greggs and Holland & Barrett. Signs outside the shop read "Umi: A new wave is coming." Bosses are hiring and searching for sushi chefs to join the team while construction is ongoing to prepare the new restaurant. Umi already operates a restaurant on Edinburgh's Chapel Street between Nile Valley Cafe and Saj Shawarma Grill beside the University of Edinburgh campus. The eatery serves a range of traditional Japanese cuisine such as sushi and gyoza. The new eatery will join Shandwick Place's portfolio of establishments and help fill one of the several empty shopfronts on the West End street. Edinburgh Live has previously reported on the high number of vacant shopfronts in the area. Umi boasts an impressive 4.2 out of five stars on Google reviews for its location on Chapel Street. One satisfied, five-star customer shared: "My boyfriend and I went for a romantic dinner at this restaurant, and we absolutely loved it. The place has a cozy yet classy and elegant atmosphere, with private cubicle-style tables and small curtains that make the experience even more intimate. "The food was absolutely delicious, and as I had been recommended before, the ramen was incredible—the best I've had so far!" Another raved: "A fantastic experience where the atmosphere , food and friendly service is top class ,the ramen was the chicken karaage and easily it was the best ive ever had. The broth was tasty and spicy and the chicken had a fantastic flavour, we had gyozas to start and they were so good." Last year, Edinburgh Live reported how Umi stopped accepting certain gift vouchers after a batch was allegedly stolen. The restaurant did not specify how the vouchers were apparently stolen but they shared concerns they could be illegally sold to tourists or unsuspecting locals during the busy August period. ‘Elite' US fast food chain to open new sites across the UK

When Dave's Hot Chicken opened its doors in London for the first time in December 2024, a massive queue stretched along Shaftesbury Avenue. The US fast food chain, which was born in Los Angeles, was an instant hit and even six months later, fans are so desperate to get a taste, they continue to wait up to an hour to order. If you haven't managed to try it yet, you might not have to travel to London to do so, as the fried chicken business is expanding across the UK. Dave's Hot Chicken (DHC) has confirmed two new major sites will be opening soon in Birmingham and Manchester – with the first to open in a matter of weeks. Those in Birmingham will be able to try the chain's Nashville Hot Chicken from July when a restaurant opens at 56 New Street. The new location is inside an iconic Art Deco-style building with a space-themed interior complete with UFO installations, holograms, and graffiti art inspired by renowned L.A. based street artists Splatterhaus and Dehmq. And following hot on the heels of this, on August 8, Dave's Hot Chicken will open its doors in Macnhester's Printworks. This site will take its cue from Manchester's warehouse rave scene and feature an industrial interior design, with towering ceilings, exposed steelwork and laser lights. Speaking about the expansion plans, Jim Attwood, managing director of Dave's Hot Chicken UK, told Metro: 'Birmingham and Manchester are on the up, with food scenes to rival London's. Opening up our next two locations here kicks off our national expansion, and we can't wait to welcome our first fans through the doors. 'Kicking off in July, Birmingham is our first major moment – the first UK site outside London, whilst our new spot in Printworks Manchester is right in the heart of one of the UK's most exciting cities. 'We're taking Dave's Hot Chicken nationwide. Watch this space.' Metro's Courtney Pochin, gave the chicken chain a try and it was love at first bite. She said: 'I've only had food from DHC the once, but it easily blows KFC out of the water and that meal was all it took for it to shoot right up there to join Popeyes in the top tier of my fast food rankings. 'The chicken is nice and juicy and the Medium spice level is perfect for those who want food that's full of flavour with a kick of heat. They're big on pickles, which I love, but the best part was hands down the loaded Cinnamon Toast Crunch Shake – that's a drink that dreams are made of.' DHC brought a number of US favourites over to the UK, with prices starting from £8. Interestingly, there are just two main chicken items on the menu — tenders and sliders (sandwiches) — which are made using halal certified British chicken. However, they also recently launched chicken bites in London. To pair with your chicken, there are a range of sides available including fries, pickles, and slaw, and you can also order combinations of these to make for a bigger meal, with four combo options to choose form. Customers can also personalise their order by selecting a spice level for the dish, with seven different levels to choose from: No Spice, Lite Mild, Mild, Medium, Hot, Extra Hot and The Reaper. The latter is so hot that anyone who dares to try it has to sign a waiver before they're allowed to tuck into their food. Alongside this, there are soft drinks such as Coca-Cola, Fanta, and Sprite, and those feeling the heat can cool off with an indulgent top-loaded shake for £4.49. Flavours include chocolate, vanilla or strawberry and these can be topped with Oreo or M&Ms. Dave's Hot Chicken was founded in East Hollywood back in 2017, when four friends who loved chicken tenders scraped together enough money ($900) to buy a fryer and launch a pop-up business in a car park. More Trending They began serving Nashville-style hot chicken and soon people were flocking to get a taste, with Drake, Samuel L. Jackson, and Usher all being counted amongst the brand's biggest fans, and investing in the company. The business was recently named America's Fastest growing Restaurant chain, as it now has 200 restaurants across America. The chain signed an agreement with Azzurri Group in the UK to open 60 sites across the country, so we can expect to see much more from them. View More » And if you're still wondering how it tastes, fans on X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram have praised the food as 'unreal', 'amazing', 'elite' and a '10/10'. Do you have a story to share?
