Leon Draisaitl scores in OT again, Oilers beat Panthers 5-4 in Game 4 to tie Stanley Cup Final
Leon Draisaitl scored in overtime for the fourth time this playoffs, and the Edmonton Oilers beat the Florida Panthers 5-4 in Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final on Thursday night to tie the series, erasing a three-goal deficit and bouncing back after allowing the late tying goal.
Jake Walman gave the Oilers their first lead with 6:24 left in the third period before Sam Reinhart scored with 19.5 seconds left to send it to overtime. Three of the first four games of this final have needed extra time to be settled, the first time that has happened since 2013 and fifth time in NHL history.
Draisaitl's goal 11:18 into OT — the fourth session of extra hockey between these teams — sent the series back to Western Canada all even. Game 5 of what's turning into a classic back-and-forth series between two hockey heavyweights is Saturday night in Edmonton.
'It's obviously a fortunate bounce. No secret about it. We'll take it,' Draisaitl said.
'We're a resilient group. We're never going to quit no matter what. We'll take it and go home,' he added. 'Our first isn't what we wanted and then we started to get our legs. ... That's the intensity we have to play with when the puck drops.'
Draisaitl set an NHL playoff record with his fourth overtime goal in one postseason, breaking a tie he shared with four players including Florida's Matthew Tkachuk in 2023, current teammate Corey Perry, who did so with Anaheim in 2017, and Maurice Richard (1951). It was his second goal of this series, joining Montreal's John LeClair, who scored two OT goals in the Canadiens win over Los Angeles in 1993, and New York Rangers Don Raleigh in 1950.
The Oilers became the first road team to rally from down three to win a game in the final since the Montreal Canadiens against the Seattle Metropolitans in 1919. Only six teams have come back from down three in the final in NHL history, the last time in 2006.
Edmonton is very much in it now, even after it looked like it would be blown out of the series. The Oilers fell behind 3-0 in the first period on a pair of goals by Matthew Tkachuk and another with 41.7 seconds left from Anton Lundell, which could have been a back-breaker.
Coach Kris Knoblauch pulled Stuart Skinner after his starter allowed those three goals on 17 shots in the first, when the ice was tilted against him and his teammates did not have much of a pushback. In went Calvin Pickard, the journeyman backup who won all six of his starts this playoffs before getting injured.
Pickard made some acrobatic saves, stopping the first 18 shots he faced and paving the way for a once-in-a-century comeback. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored on Edmonton's first power play, Darnell Nurse beat Sergei Bobrovsky with another shot up high and Vasily Podkolzin made it 3-all with less than five minutes left in the second.
With Draisaitl in the penalty box to start the third, Oilers were on their heels for several minutes and relied on Pickard to keep the score tied. He turned aside every shot he faced until Walman fired the puck past Bobrovsky to silence a vast majority of the crowd and incite a roar out of the Edmonton fans among those in attendance along with Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce.
Panthers fans had one more chance to cheer when Reinhart tied it late. Then Draisaitl quieted them again.
With Hockey Hall of Famers Wayne Gretzky, Jaromir Jagr and Henrik Lundqvist also in the building, the Oilers made sure they would not go quietly and fall behind 3-1 in the final like they did last year. They forced Game 7 then but ultimately fell short, with Florida winning the Cup for the first time in franchise history.

June 13 - The Edmonton Oilers could have returned home a loss away from falling to the Florida Panthers in the Stanley Cup Final for a second straight year. Instead, they have a chance to put themselves one win away from a championship when they host the Panthers for Game 5 on Saturday. It didn't look like they would be in this position after Florida staked a 3-0 lead in the first period of Game 4 on Thursday. But the Oilers rallied to take a 4-3 advantage and, after the Panthers tied it in the dying seconds, Leon Draisaitl clinched it in overtime to give the visitors the 5-4 win. The best-of-seven series is tied 2-2. "I mean, everybody knows what the crowd's going to be like, Saturday night in Alberta, it's going to be exciting," veteran Edmonton winger Corey Perry said. "But I think I've talked about this a lot: We're mature and I think after that first period last night it showed we're a mature hockey team. I don't expect anything else." The 40-year-old helped spark the Oilers with some words of wisdom after the first period. He's also been delivering on the ice with nine goals in the playoffs, second only to Draisaitl. Perry, who is playing in the Stanley Cup Final for the fifth time in the past six seasons, has 140 points (63 goals, 77 assists) in 235 career playoff games. "He's been so valuable for us," Edmonton defenseman Mattias Ekholm said of Perry. "He's a leader and he knows exactly when to step in there. He doesn't do it all the time but when he does, it's always great and gets everybody's attention. "I mean, it was good from him last night again, both on the ice and in the locker room. It's what we expect out of him. He's getting up there, but he's still got it." The Panthers, meanwhile, are turning the page after the loss. They've been here before: Last year, Edmonton erased Florida's 3-0 series lead to ultimately force a Game 7. "We're calm and confident," Panthers defenseman Gustav Forsling said. "If we play our game, we know we're going to win most games. ... The good thing is, we have a game tomorrow, so we're ready to bounce right back. We're very excited to get back." It's been an incredibly tight series thus far, with three of the four games going to overtime. Florida's power play has helped fuel the defending Cup champions, going 7-for-21 with the man advantage. It could be the edge the Panthers need to regain the series lead; the Oilers have scored just four times on 20 power-play opportunities. "A lot of the success in postseason is how you handle your losses," Florida forward Sam Reinhart said. "They're going to happen, especially when you get down to the last two teams. You've got two of the best teams going at it. So you've got to expect to lose at some point. There's a lot we can learn from and come back strong in Game 5." Edmonton has not announced a starting goalie for Game 5. Stuart Skinner was pulled after allowing three goals on 17 shots in the first period in Game 4. Meredith Gaudreau, the widow of NHL star Johnny Gaudreau, has penned a heartbreaking essay for Player's Tribune that details the devastating moment she learned her husband died. Johnny Gaudreau 31, who played for the Columbus Blue Jackets, and his younger brother, Matthew Gaudreau, 29, were killed in August 2024 after an alleged drunk driver crashed into them as they were riding bicycles in their New Jersey hometown. In her essay, which was written in the style of an open letter to her late husband, Meredith Gaudreau revealed that the brothers' death on Aug. 29, 2024 came a week after she told her husband she was secretly pregnant with their third child, Carter, now 2 months old. 'In my head I couldn't believe we were about to have three kids under 3. It seemed like so much for us to handle. I was scared,' she wrote. 'But your face, John. Your face in that moment told me all I needed to know: that it was going to be OK. That we were going to be the best little team ever.' The day of her husband's death, which was also the four-year anniversary of the day the couple got engaged, started out on a high note. Meredith Gaudreau recalled that the pro hockey star made breakfast for their two older children, daughter Noa, now 2, and son Johnny, now 1, as she slept in. 'I walked into the kitchen and said, 'Hey, today's the day. August 29. Four years ago.' Four years since the day you'd gotten down on one knee and asked one more question,' she wrote. 'It was going to be a great day,' she added, noting that the couple would be attending her sister-in-law Katie Gaudreau 's wedding on Aug. 30. 'You were heading out to play golf with Matthew and all the groomsmen. You had our car packed to the brim in perfect Tetris fashion. Things for the wedding, things for Columbus, things for Johnny's christening. 'You kissed all of us goodbye and said you'd see us later. And that was that,' she wrote. Hours later, the idyllic morning turned into a nightmare. 'Katie called, and she said something had happened but she didn't know what exactly,' Meredith Gaudreau wrote. 'My dad drove me over to your parents', and I was thinking the whole time about how I was going to help you through whatever it could be that had happened to Matty,' she wrote of her brother-in-law, whose wife, Madeline Gaudreau, was also pregnant at the time. 'And then I walked up the front porch and learned the absolute worst had happened and that it was both of you,' she wrote. 'There aren't any words to go here,' she added. She recalled that her initial response after hearing the news was a 'shock' that was 'indescribable.' Then, she was 'keeled over' and sick to her stomach' for days, she wrote. 'The only person who can relate to me is my own sister-in-law. I see her and my heart breaks for her. I'm sick for her,' she wrote. 'I thought of our baby inside of me. I couldn't stand up. I was awake and having nightmares. Thinking of you in that moment. Thinking of Matty. It's just the worst thing I could have ever imagined,' she wrote. 'And in an instant, I missed you more than I knew was possible. And I haven't stopped missing you since.' 'To go from getting ready for a beautiful wedding all week with your sister, to being in a funeral home with Madeline trying to figure all these things out — it just hurt so much,' she wrote. Near the end of her letter, Meredith Gaudreau expressed her appreciation for her family and the sports community for all the love and support they gave to her and Madeline Gaudreau during the worst days of their lives. She also told her late husband how much she admired him as a man, a partner and a father. 'You were perfect, ' she wrote. ' I don't know how you could have ever been better.' She added that she felt 'lucky' that all three of their children — including baby Carter, the son her late husband never had the chance to meet — inherited his best qualities. Meredith Gaudreau concluded her emotional essay by wishing her late husband a 'Happy first Father's Day as a father of three!' 'Thank you for the very best years of my life,' she wrote. 'Thank you for making us a family. Thank you for being my best friend, my favorite person, the man of my dreams.'
