
Sabah quake 10 years on: Safer routes, new search and rescue team to enhance safety at Mt Kinabalu
The Sabah State Government has made at least 10 safety enhancements to Mount Kinabalu, a decade after an earthquake there killed 18 people, including 10 Singaporeans. There are now two new and safer routes to the Malaysian peak and a rescue team on standby 24/7, and annual search and rescue drills to sharpen communication and response times. Australian bouncy castle operator cleared over accident that killed six children
SYDNEY: An Australian woman whose bouncy castle was blown into the air by a freak wind event, killing six children, was found not guilty on Friday (Jun 6) of failing to meet her health and safety duties. In December 2021, a gust of wind lifted the inflatable castle about 10m into the air while children were celebrating the end of their year at a primary school in Devonport, northern Tasmania. Six children died and three were seriously injured. Rosemary Gamble, owner of party equipment company Taz-Zorb that operated the bouncy castle, was charged with failing to comply with a workplace health and safety duty. She pleaded not guilty and on Friday the Devonport Magistrates Court dismissed the charges against her. Magistrate Robert Webster said the bouncy castle was lifted into the air by an "unprecedented weather system, namely a dust devil". "Gamble could have done more or taken further steps however given the effects of the unforeseen and unforeseeable dust devil, had she done so, that would sadly have made no difference to the ultimate outcome," Webster said in his decision. "In those circumstances I find the charge is not proved. It is therefore dismissed." "NO WORDS" Gamble said she accepted how "deeply and tragically this incident impacted so many people and families". "I realise those scars will remain for an extremely long time, likely forever," she said in a statement to the Australian national broadcaster ABC. "There are no words to describe how I have felt ever since that tragic incident took so much away from so many people and left nothing but heartbreak and emptiness in its place. "I never meant for something like this to happen. And I am just so sorry that it did." Andrew Dodt, the father of one of the children who died in the incident, said he had been "broken for a long time".

Singapore to acquire 2 Malaysian-owned land parcels as long-term solution to congestion at Woodlands Checkpoint

The Singapore Land Authority (SLA) officially gazetted the acquisition of two vegetated and unused land parcels, covering about 0.79 hectares in total, on Wednesday (Jun 4). In a joint press release, the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) and the SLA stated that they will work closely with the Malaysian Government throughout the acquisition process, affirming , 'We will continue our strong partnership with the Malaysian Government to strengthen connectivity and people-to-people links.' The WCP expansion will be done in phases over the next 10 to 15 years, it added. The first phase of construction is scheduled to begin in the third quarter of 2025 (Q3 2025). ICA will build an extension at Old Woodlands Town Centre, including new automated clearance facilities for cargo vehicles, arriving cars, and motorcycles. The Bukit Timah Expressway (BKE) will also be extended to ease traffic on local roads during peak hours. Subsequent phases will include additional clearance facilities and retrofitting the existing WCP. When complete, WCP aims to reduce peak wait times for vehicles from 60 to 15 minutes, increase automation by adding more automated in-car immigration clearance systems, enhance security checks by conducting them away from the main checkpoint structure, and alleviate congestion around the checkpoint by providing holding areas for traffic within the checkpoint. Last year, daily traveller volume at WCP rose 22% to 327,000 from 269,000 in 2023. In Dec 20, the checkpoint saw a record high of 376,000 travellers in a single day during the year-end school holidays. Man allegedly spit at female passengers twice on bus; fellow commuter calls for action
SINGAPORE: A commuter has raised concerns over a man who allegedly spat at female passengers on a public bus on two separate occasions, with no significant action taken despite multiple reports. Vengesh, who witnessed the incidents during his morning commute, told Stomp the disturbing behaviour happened around 6.30am on bus service 65. 'I saw the man spitting at female passengers twice,' he said, 'On one occasion, he even blew his nose and wiped it on the bus seat. I shouted at him many times, but he just ignored me.' According to Vengesh, he promptly reported the incidents to the bus captain, who issued a warning to the man. However, the commuter expressed frustration that the problem persists. 'It's disappointing that such unhygienic and aggressive behaviour is allowed to continue. Does age really excuse someone from being held accountable?' he questioned. Vengesh also filed reports with the police and the National Environment Agency (NEA). In his police report from August 23, 2024, he described the man—a Chinese-descended male—as exhibiting 'aggressive and abusive behaviour,' including shouting loudly and using offensive language. Vengesh added that the man had previously spat on nearby passengers, creating an unsafe environment. He believed the man was targeting him specifically after an earlier confrontation over vulgar language months before. He made another police report on October 3, 2024. In February 2025, the police responded by advising Vengesh to call them immediately should he encounter the man again. Vengesh expressed the practical difficulties of this approach: 'Call the police at 6.30am to catch him? Really? How am I supposed to go to work? I want to be a good citizen, but I cannot be taking leave for everything just to get someone caught. Stopping the bus and calling 999 while everyone's rushing to work isn't realistic.' Stomp reported that the NEA was unable to take further action due to the lack of a specific timeframe, which made reviewing CCTV footage impossible. Turning to Stomp for help, Vengesh said: 'I'm sharing this to raise awareness and help stop this unruly and unhygienic behaviour. I hope by exposing him, people will start to notice, and he'll be more cautious and behave appropriately on the bus.'
