
"Every launch is a learning process" Space strategist PK Gosh after launch EOS-09 satellite failed
New Delhi [India], May 18 (ANI): Space Strategist PK Ghosh said that the unfortunate failure encountered by Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) in the launch of its 101st satellite, EOS-09, aboard the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-C61), should be used as a learning process.
Speaking with ANI, Ghosh said, 'It is slightly unfortunate, but I do not like to use the term 'failure'. Every launch is a learning process. We assume that there was some problem in the third stage. This is our 101st launch; we had remarkable success...I am sure we will learn from this and go forward in our next launch'
Earlier in the day, ISRO Chief V Narayanan confirmed that the launch could not be accomplished, and scientists are further studying the entire performance.
Addressing a press conference, V Narayanan said the first two stages after the launch performed as expected, and the problem was detected at the third stage.
'Today we attempted a launch of the PSLV-C61 vehicle. The vehicle is a 4-stage vehicle. The first two stages performed as expected. During the 3rd stage, we are seeing observation. The mission could not be accomplished. We are studying the entire performance; we shall come back at the earliest,' Narayanan said.
The flight sequence of the PSLV-C-61 consists of various stages, starting from the ignition of PS1 and PSOM at the ground to the separation of various sections, to finally the separation of the satellite from the rocket.
According to the ISRO chief, the problem was detected at the third stage, which is a solid rocket motor which provides the upper stage with a high thrust after the atmospheric phase of the launch. This stage has a maximum thrust of 240 Kilonewtons.
This was ISRO's 101st launch, in which they launched the Earth Orbiting Satellite, also known as EOS-09, which was supposed to be put in a Sun Synchronous Polar Orbit (SSPO).
The plan was for the EOS-09 satellite to be deployed as Orbit Change Thrusters (OCT) will be used to lower the altitude of the PS4 stage. This will be followed by passivation, a measure aimed at reducing the stage's orbital life and ensuring responsible space operations. EOS-09 is designed to deliver continuous and reliable remote sensing data for use in various operational sectors.
EOS-09 is an advanced Earth observation satellite equipped with C-band synthetic aperture radar technology. It can capture high-resolution images of the Earth's surface under all weather conditions, day or night. This capability enhances India's surveillance and management systems across multiple sectors. Axiom-4 Mission launch gets postponed to 11 June due to bad weather
Axiom-4 (Ax-4) mission to the International Space Station (ISS), which includes Indian Gaganyatri Shubhanshu Shukla onboard, and was supposed to lift off on June 10, has now been pushed to June 11 due to adverse weather conditions, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) announced on Monday. The mission crew include India's Indian Air Force pilot Shubhanshu Shukla, along with three other crew members. The Axiom-4 mission was supposed to be launched from LC-39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Centre on 10 June at 8.22 am ET. Dr. V Narayanan, Chairman of ISRO, Secretary of the Department of Space, and Chairman of the Space Commission, confirmed the postponement via a post through ISRO's X account. 'Due to weather conditions, the launch of Axiom-4 mission for sending Indian Gaganyatri to the International Space Station is postponed from 10th June 2025 to 11th June 2025," reads the post. Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh also posted about the postponement of the Axiom-4 mission. 'Due to adverse weather, the launch of the Axiom-4 mission carrying Indian Gaganyatri to the International Space Station is rescheduled from June 10 to possibly June 11, 2025. Further updates, if any, will be shared accordingly,' Dr Jitendra Singh posted on X. Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla is set to become the second Indian in space and the first to visit the International Space Station. He will pilot the Axiom Mission-4, scheduled for launch aboard the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft on June 11, alongside crewmates from the US, Hungary, and Poland. The Axiom-4 mission aims to carry out 60 experiments with a four-member crew. These include seven experiments that have been planned by ISRO and five others in which Shukla will participate as part of NASA's human research programme.

Gauhati University becomes first in India to pioneer experiments with VECC's superconducting cyclotron
Guwahati (Assam) [India], June 9 (ANI): Gauhati University has become the first institution in India to conduct experiments using the recently commissioned Superconducting Cyclotron at the Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre (VECC) in Kolkata, marking a significant development in Indian nuclear physics research. The Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre (VECC) Superconducting Cyclotron is like a high-speed ride for tiny particles, such as protons or ions. It uses strong magnets and electric currents to spin these particles to incredibly high speeds, reaching energies between 400 and 500 million electron volts (MeV). This is much more powerful than other similar machines in India, which can only reach up to 250 MeV. By speeding up particles to such high energies, scientists can study how the tiniest building blocks of atoms behave in extreme conditions, helping us learn more about how the universe works. Other facilities in India, like those at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) in Mumbai and the Inter University Accelerator Centre (IUAC) in New Delhi, can only work with lower energies, up to 250 MeV. The VECC Cyclotron's higher energy range allows scientists to explore new areas of nuclear physics, such as how atoms split apart in a process called nuclear fission. The experiment, which took place over two months, was led by Prof Kushal Kalita from the Department of Physics, Gauhati University along with his PhD students, and in collaboration with Dr TK Ghosh and Amit Sen from VECC. Their work focused on understanding how atoms split at these high energies, adding valuable knowledge to nuclear physics. Prof Nani Gopal Mahanta, Vice Chancellor of Gauhati University, praised the achievement and said, 'Using the VECC Superconducting Cyclotron, which can reach energies up to 500 MeV, we can study how atoms behave in ways we couldn't before. This experiment is a big step forward, and Gauhati University is proud to be part of it.' Prof Kalita said, 'Working with VECC has allowed us to explore parts of nuclear fission that other Indian facilities can't study because of their lower energy limits.' This successful experiment paves the way for more exciting discoveries in nuclear physics in India and opens doors for future collaborations between universities and research centres. (ANI)

Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel inaugurates Shri Swaminarayan Gurukul, commences academic session in Dabhoi
Gandhinagar (Gujarat) [India], June 9 (ANI): Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel inaugurated the newly constructed Swaminarayan Gurukul in Dabhoi, Vadodara district, and formally commenced the academic session. The event was graced by the presence of saints, spiritual leaders, and distinguished dignitaries, according to the release. He said that 'In the Indian education system along with knowledge, values are also essential.' He further explained that in the ancient Gurukul tradition, princes received education and initiation from revered sages. Lord Rama was educated by sages Vashishta and Vishwamitra, while Lord Shri Krishna acquired knowledge from Rishi Sandipani. This very Gurukul tradition is now being revitalised through modern methods, thereby honouring and preserving our ancient heritage. The Chief Minister stated that institutions like these are, in contemporary times, blending the Gurukul tradition with modern advancements to offer students not only academic knowledge but also value-based and culturally grounded training essential for holistic development. The establishment of a modern hostel alongside a technologically equipped school campus marks the beginning of a new era in education. MLA Shailesh Mehta stated that, considering the cultural ethos of Darbhavati Nagari, the establishment of a Gurukul imparting value-based education had become a vital necessity. 'The Chief Minister has shown special affection for Darbhavati by providing unique grants and developmental schemes, and therefore, I proudly say today that the Chief Minister's contribution to Darbhavati's development is invaluable. Jitubhai Vaghani, MLA Bhavnagar, stated that generally, when any educational institution is managed by commercial entities, it often operates with a profit-oriented approach. However, when such institutions are managed by saints, they are guided by a spirit of service and are enriched with cultural and moral values -- a truth that society has experienced firsthand. Swaminarayan Gurukul is not just an educational institution; it is an abode of values. Such institutions, equipped with modern technology and rooted in values, contribute not only to teaching but also to showing students how to live. The real success of a Gurukul is when students feel drawn to attend, to study, and are shaped with Indianness, ethics, and patriotism alongside their education, the release said.
