Cheung ‘can compete with best' on Asian Tour return, despite struggles in India

Two weeks into the new Asian Tour season and Matthew Cheung has no doubts he belongs among the ranks of the region's best golfers – he just hasn't shaken off all the pre-season rust yet.
The Hongkonger was on course to miss the cut on Friday at the International Series India, the second tournament running in which he would not be playing at the weekend, after similar struggles at the Philippine Open.
But just being in the same field as the likes of Bryson DeChambeau, Paul Casey, Anirbhan Lahiri and other LIV Golf stars is a step up from the golfing backwaters he travelled in last year.
'I mean, of course, everybody wants to be out here, right?' Cheung said. 'But at the end of the day, only 65 guys keep their card every single year. So, it was difficult, but it was also a big motivator for me, you know, to just keep working hard. Matthew Cheung chips out of a bunker during the International Series Qatar in November. 'At the start of the year, I did question it a little bit. All golfers do, you know – you have one bad week and question whether you're good enough or not. So there are questions. But at the end of the day, if you can try to get 1 per cent better every single day, you're working in the right direction, and that's all you can really do.'
It is not the first time Cheung has played an International Series event. He finished in a tie for 10th in Vietnam in 2023, but that was a rare success in a rookie year when his inconsistencies ultimately cost him his tour card.

Man behind United's Asian tour already planning for big names to visit Hong Kong in 2026

The man who engineered Manchester United's post-season Asian tour said he was already planning to bring more big clubs to Hong Kong next year. Advertisement Paul Kam called the Premier League strugglers' visit a qualified success, after a combined 105,648 people attended games against Asean All-Stars, in Malaysia, and a select XI in Hong Kong. He did not want to comment on whether his ProEvents business recorded a profit or loss from a venture that reportedly earned money-starved United around £8 million (US$10.8 million). And despite 'thoroughly enjoying' Friday's match at Hong Kong Stadium, Kam said he would need some convincing before arranging any more end-of-season fixtures. Wedged between the climax of a 10-month campaign and the June international window, Manchester United's five-day trip attracted criticism over player welfare concerns. Advertisement A number of head coach Ruben Amorim's squad were reportedly grumpy about being ordered overseas, an impression heightened after Amad Diallo raised his middle finger at a supporter in Malaysia, then surly winger Alejandro Garnacho posted a snap from the flight home on social media, accompanied by the caption 'finally'.

Top football clubs need to repay Asian fans with value for money

A famous English football club playing in Hong Kong is always a special occasion for the city's fans, who rarely get to watch their heroes perform live. Manchester United, arguably the biggest team in the world, are usually one of the most eagerly anticipated visitors. But they arrived in the city last week under a cloud, at the end of their worst top-flight season in half a century, languishing in 15th place in the English Premier League. United secured victory on Friday, beating a battling Hong Kong select XI 3-1. But the postseason Asian tour has raised questions. The whistle-stop trip at the end of a gruelling season has been criticised amid concerns about the welfare of players facing a punishing schedule. One former footballer described it as 'mad' and a British radio pundit branded the tour 'utterly ridiculous'. Hong Kong supporters, meanwhile, still smarting from the notorious non-appearance of revered superstar Lionel Messi in the city last year, might question whether they received value for money. Ticket prices ranged from HK$1,390 to HK$2,990, significantly higher than the sum I paid to watch United play Arsenal in the premier league.

Johnson receives special invite to PGA Championship

Johnson receives special invite to PGA Championship Dustin Johnson's world ranking has plummeted to 751 since joining the Liv Golf tour. Photo: AFP Liv Golf's former world number one, Dustin Johnson, has been handed a special invite to next week's PGA Championship after losing his exemption to the field, it was confirmed on Tuesday. Johnson had previously been eligible to play in the PGA Championship due to his victory in the Masters in 2020 under rules that give a place in the tournament to the last five winners of the Masters. However, that exemption expired following Rory McIlroy's victory last month at Augusta, where the 40-year-old Johnson missed the cut. Two-time major champion Johnson, whose world ranking has plummeted to 751 since joining Liv, is one of several players from the Saudi Arabia-financed circuit included in the field for the PGA Championship, released on Tuesday. Other Liv players lining up for the tournament at Quail Hollow in North Carolina include Jon Rahm, Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau. The PGA Championship, the second major of the season, takes place from May 15-18. (AFP)
