Women's Day 2025: 4 times UAE women made country proud
People all over the world celebrate International Women's Day on March 8 to honour the women in their lives. From the workplace to familial ties, women are doing it all, leading generations and sparking change across various fields.
The theme for 2025 is 'accelerate action', which emphasises the need to take swift steps to achieve equality, and remove systemic barriers that women face. Here are four times UAE women have paved the way for others in their different fields, from engineers to athletes to photographers.
What started as a way to gain acceptance from her family and community culminated in a historic achievement for this young Emirati. Marwa Al Mamari, the UAE's first aerospace engineer, joined the field "without realising" she was the first Emirati to pursue it.
With a penchant for academic excellence, she initially expected to become a doctor, but later wanted to explore a new field, and "step out of her comfort zone."
While her family was initially uncertain about her decision, they gave their blessing, and the young engineer also had the support of the country's leadership.
"You don't have to live the same dream forever; you can start a new one, work toward it, and achieve it,' she stressed. As a mother, she stressed there is no single recipe for balancing family and career; it is simply a matter of trying again and again.
After completing her studies, Marwa assumed a pivotal role at the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) as a specialist in accident prevention and safety recommendations within the accident investigation sector.
Marwa was recognised at the Emirati Women Achievers 2024 organised by startAD, a global accelerator based at NYU Abu Dhabi that guides startups in launching, developing, and scaling their businesses.
Emirates' Equestrian
Fatima Al Ameri, a 32-year-old Emirati, embodies the spirit of resilience as she takes control of her horse's reins.
The athlete who faced bullying for her riding style almost gave up during her early training, but her passion overpowered her desire to leave, and she went on to be named "Emirates' Equestrian," capturing the hearts of many.
Fatima went viral for her horseback salute to President Sheikh Mohamed during the UAE's 53rd National Day celebrations. She describes the ruler as her "father and master."
Horse riding is not the only sport she embraces; camel racing is another field where she continues to break barriers. Fatima made history as the first Emirati woman to participate in an international event at Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Festival in Taif.
She uses her voice to encourage young girls to participate in equestrian sports, and emphasises the importance of proper training.
All-women esports team
From young girls interested in gaming, these Emiratis went on to become competitive athletes who represented UAE on their global debut at World Esports Championships in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia in November 2024.
The country's first all-female esports team felt a "sense of responsibility" to do well for the country and pave the way for women in the field. Among the members of the UAE female team were Moza Khalid (25), Fatima Al Ansari (24), and Mariam Al Shamisi (34).
The young athletes have the support of the women in their lives, like their mothers, friends, and sisters. The global debut was a "surreal feeling" where all the hard work paid off, the esports team members said.
These women inspire young girls to work at it, no matter what their dream is, and "develop, grow, and achieve greatness.'
First female nuclear safety inspector
This 22-year-old initially did not fully understand the field of nuclear engineering; however, her passion for science and the country fuelled her determination to succeed.
Meera Al Mheiri made history as the first Emirati woman to take on the role of nuclear safety inspector at the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR).
Her first site visit was "quite dramatic; I even fainted," the young scientist said. Having graduated as one of the top students from the nascent nuclear programme, she was determined to adapt her lifestyle to adapt to the intense physical demands of working on construction sites, especially in harsh conditions.
Meera continues to volunteer and learn constantly, balancing her work with her hobbies. With her hunger for knowledge, she recognised the importance of observing the experts around her and learning as quickly as possible.
'I wasn't as intimidated as much as I felt a tremendous sense of responsibility,' she said.

Jetour T1 road test: Versatile vehicle taking over UAE highways has style and substance
Any Gulf resident with even a mild interest in motoring – and many with even less – will be familiar with the Jetour brand. Among the many car companies making their forays into world markets in recent years, the Chinese manufacturer can claim to have made an especially significant impact in the Emirates. One of the brand's key offerings now gracing the UAE's highways and byways is the T1, a vehicle that combines the rugged aesthetics of tough off-roaders with the around-town sophistication that would be expected at the more genial end of the spectrum. The car, sometimes referred to as the Traveler, seems to have been designed specifically to appeal to those seeking a versatile vehicle for both city commutes and light off-road excursions. An urban SUV, or, as parent company Chery would say, an off-roader lite. While it is not unusual for manufacturers providing cars of this ilk, Jetour has done a good job visually with the T1, making it appear familiar yet still distinctive. It is noticeably different to its significantly tougher-looking sibling, the T2. That said, it's not all about prettiness. The T1 retains a boxy, commanding presence, all encompassed within an appealing shape that was created by former Porsche designer Hakan Saracoglu. Its look incorporates a series of sharp angles set off by LED matrix headlights with distinctive daytime running lamps, accompanied by bold alloy wheels in both 18 and 19-inch formats. The T1 is smart-looking. Taking it for a test drive, it quickly becomes clear the model isn't about style over substance. That much is immediately evident when entering the cabin. The T1 feels just as at home on the roads as those piloting the region's far more well-entrenched SUVs. Ride-wise, it manages to combine the solidity of rougher rides with the gentility of the rather more demure options. Driving around in an inexpensive car that doesn't feel that way is always distinctly agreeable. Admittedly, the engine is at the smaller end of the range in cars of this sort, but the turbocharger definitely gives a leg, or, indeed wheel, up. Joining motorways from slip lanes doesn't feel a hurried affair and that is always a bonus in the UAE's major conurbations. When it comes to off-road, the T1 is considerably more adept in these areas than many others in the same bracket, and the drive options, including mud, sand and rock, go some way to indicating its willingness to take on the terrain. Incorporating what is referred to as intelligent four-wheel drive, it also has a wading depth of just north of half a metre, so that's another plus point. Think twice about doing this with the two-wheel drive option, though. Inside, Jetour has been going for a premium and tech-rich experience. The cabin is spacious, but not so much that it feels like an airport lounge. The seating features heating, ventilation and cooling functions that are often found in rather more expensive options. Tech-wise, the centrepiece is a 15.6-inch infotainment screen, supported by the usual Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The vehicle also features a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster with USB ports and wireless charging capabilities. Matters are further improved with the T1's dual-layer of sun-proof glass that reduces heat, blocks glare and ensures a quieter ride for those on the inside. The safety package is also decent, featuring driver aids such as adaptive cruise control, blind spot detection, lane keeping assist and automatic emergency braking, along with multiple airbags and a 360-degree panoramic camera. The takeaway? This is a car that won't be seeing a lot of off-road action from its buyers, but can handle less severe terrain should the need arise. The fact that the car might not be first choice for the Dakar Rally isn't really an issue, as that isn't the point. The T1 is smart, fun and inexpensive, so it's not hard to see why it's proving popular.

ITC calls on vehicle owners to complete necessary procedures for long-term parked vehicles in M-18 Musaffah truck parking area
Abu Dhabi – As part of its ongoing efforts to regulate the use of truck yards and public parking facilities and enhance their operational efficiency across the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, the Integrated Transport Centre (ITC), affiliated with the Department of Municipalities and Transport, has called on vehicle owners whose vehicles have been parked for more than six months in Musaffah's designated truck yard (M-18) to visit the on-site parking management office to complete the necessary procedures, including updating vehicle records and settling outstanding fees. The ITC confirmed that vehicles left parked for extended periods without fulfilling the required procedures, such as updating vehicle information and settling outstanding fees, may expose their owners to legal action, including the possibility of public auction in coordination with the relevant authorities and in accordance with the applicable regulations in the Emirate. The ITC urged the concerned vehicle owners to promptly complete the required procedures, noting that unauthorised parking or failure to register vehicle details constitutes a clear violation of public parking regulations. Such practices obstruct the flow of movement within the yards and negatively impact the visual appearance of the urban environment. This measure is part of the ITC's ongoing efforts to regulate parking usage, maintain smooth traffic flow, ensure public safety, and enhance the urban appearance of the Emirate.

MENA support puts Ben Sulayem in driver seat for F1 election

The clubs have written in a joint letter of support to Ben Sulayem, saying that his tenure 'has brought vital reforms across mobility and motorsport, marked by enhanced transparency, governance, sustainability and inclusivity.'Backing him for a second term in office, they added, 'Your vision has helped bridge gaps, inspire unity and empower regions like ours to contribute more meaningfully to the global FIA mission. We now feel equal as members of the FIA, regardless of our size or location.
