Family members convicted of fatally stabbing woman in "honor killing"
A Dutch court on Thursday sentenced four men to 25 years for the "honor killing" of a woman stabbed to death in broad daylight in front of her three-year-old daughter.
The 28-year-old Roshin was stabbed 28 times by her elder brother as she walked with her daughter in the eastern Dutch city of Apeldoorn in September 2023.
"A more gruesome end to a human life is hard to imagine. Her daughter saw her mother killed in a very violent way," according to the court verdict.
Alongside the 25-year sentence for the elder brother, identified as 36-year-old Peshang A., the court also sentenced another brother and two cousins for their part in the murder.
"The audio and chat messages that the men sent to each other show that they decided together that the victim had to die, because she violated the family's honour," said the court.
After the victim had divorced, the family wanted her to move in with her parents in The Hague, but she chose to stay in Apeldoorn with her daughter and started a new relationship.
"The four men then made preparations together to carry out that plan, deliberately keeping the rest of the family out of the execution plans," according to the verdict.
Peshang A. reportedly tried to escape the court after the verdict, but was restrained by police.
The court also ordered the four men to pay $73,000 to the daughter.
"Honor killings" are especially common in Pakistan. Much of Pakistani society operates under a strict code of "honor," with women beholden to their male relatives over choices around education, employment and who they can marry.
Last April, a Pakistani man who allegedly filmed his brother strangling their sister to death has been arrested as part of the latest "honor" killing that outraged the country.
In 2023, Pakistani authorities arrested four people who allegedly killed an 18-year-old woman in the purported name of "honor" after a picture of her sitting with a boyfriend went viral on social media,. Police said the photo had been doctored and posted on fake social media accounts.
There were 384 "honor killings" reported in 2022 alone, according to the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan.

UNFI services disrupted by cyberattack

United Natural Foods, Inc. is dealing with 'temporary disruptions' to its operations stemming from 'unauthorized activity' involving its information technology systems, the grocery retailer and wholesaler disclosed in a regulatory filing Thursday. UNFI said in the filing that it took some of its systems offline as it investigates the breach, which it discovered Thursday, but did not provide details about which of its services or capabilities have been impacted. UNFI said in a statement released Monday morning that the disruption is continuing. 'As soon as we discovered the activity, an investigation was initiated with the help of leading forensics experts and we have notified law enforcement. We are assessing the unauthorized activity and working to restore our systems to safely bring them back online,' UNFI said in a statement. UNFI said in the regulatory filing that it has implemented workarounds to continue providing services 'where possible,' but did not provide additional information. The company said it is working with third-party cybersecurity experts as it looks into the cause of the incident and develops a solution. UNFI distributes groceries and nonfood products to customers at about 30,000 locations, according to its latest annual report. The company has a primary distribution arrangement with Whole Foods Market under an agreement that extends through May 2032. UNFI also runs supermarkets under banners including Cub Foods and Shoppers. The breach follows an online attack last fall that targeted systems run in the U.S. by Dutch grocery company Ahold Delhaize. That breach forced Ahold Delhaize to take e-commerce services at its Hannaford banner down for several days in addition to disrupting online operations at other chains the company runs. Jennings man arrested a month after parole release, charged with rape
JENNINGS, La. () — A Jennings man who was released from parole a month ago is accused of rape, authorities said. Tristan West, 44, of Jennings is charged with second-degree rape in connection with an incident on June 5. Jennings Police responded to a report of a rape in progress near the 1700 block of North Cary Street. The caller said the suspect was an unknown black male who was sexually assaulting one of the female residents of the home. According to investigators, the victim encountered West as he was walking in front of their residence. West asked to use the restroom as the victim and other occupants returned to their home. Officers said they discovered West pulling his pants up as they took him into custody. The victim was taken to an area hospital for treatment. West was taken into custody and admitted to sexual act and was booked into the Jeff Davis Parish jail, authorities said. He is being held on $75,000 bond.
