
Is your restaurant halal?
Dos Mas Tacos opened recently next to Spitalfields Market, one of London's trendiest and busiest areas. Two beef birria tacos cost £11.50; two mushroom vegano are £10.50; a 'can-o-water' is £2.50.
But look a little closer at their menu, and something jumps out: no pork and no alcohol. You'd expect a carnitas option at a taqueria, and you'd want a Corona with it. You can't get either at Dos Mas Tacos. Huh? Or maybe hmm.
I came across the place on TikTok, via a video of the two founders, Rupert and Charlie Avery, outside their shop. They're well-heeled lads, twins with posh accents. They used to work in the superyacht industry. 'Hey everyone!' one brother says. 'Just to let you guys all know' – in the classic TikTok singsong tone – 'we definitely don't have any pork in our kitchen, as well as no alcohol in the kitchen as well.' They gesture towards the 'comments we've been having'. The other brother then proudly shows the camera their halal butchers' certificate, which is approved by Muslim clerics. 'This is where we buy all of our meat from, so again, just to clarify that as well!'
I read the comments. 'Everyone tag this place and go. Support these guys. W [Win] Birria Tacos,' reads one, which has 6,421 likes. Not everyone is positive. 'No thanks mate – definitely will not be coming back'; 'Defo won't eat here then'; 'Look forward to reading Dos Mas Tacos is in receivership'; 'Another reason to avoid' (2,420 likes).
On the face of it, Dos Mas Tacos's decision is curious. Here are two British chaps serving a typically non-halal cuisine in a country and city where most people do not follow halal. Yet there is clearly a demand for it, driven by social media reviews.
I've been noticing similar stories around London. In 2023, the most popular opening in Soho was Supernova, a French-run joint that served smashburgers. After about a year, it went 'finally halal' and gained even more TikTok traffic. The longest queue I've seen outside a London restaurant was for Swiss Butter in Holborn. The menu didn't seem special. It was just steak frites, but halal.
Last year, the Noodle Inn arrived in Soho, serving northern Chinese cuisine. There were long queues for this too, and it's still immensely popular, but there seems to have been resistance to it not serving halal. An Instagram story from its account last week read: 'FYI Please note: We are not currently halal, but it is something we are actively working towards. Thank you for understanding.' Had Noodle Inn been getting 'comments', too?
Let's try to understand why so many restaurants are going halal. Well, from a commercial point of view, why wouldn't you? Even in 2016, it accounted for 8 per cent of the UK's total food and drink spend. Clearly that has risen since then. Fifteen per cent of London's population is Muslim, a figure which is also growing. And halal customers eat more meat per capita than other people. While Muslims make up 6.5 per cent of Britain's population, they account for 30 per cent of lamb eaten in England alone. Running a restaurant isn't easy these days, so why would you deliberately lose customers by serving food they won't eat? Especially as many customers who aren't Muslim won't even notice if a restaurant is halal.
James Chiavarini, who owns Il Portico and La Palombe in Kensington, tells me: 'If your business model is lowest common denominator, and it's high volume, high turnover, then it makes sense to go halal. Whereas the food that I do, I try to be a little more curated and elevated. I can't do lowest common denominator, I'm crap at it.'
More places than you'd think serve halal meat. Most of London's fried chicken shops – including the popular chains Wingstop and Slim Chickens – are entirely halal. So are a fifth of Nando's branches. As the company's website says: 'Non-halal meat never enters a halal restaurant: even the chicken livers and prego steak rolls are halal!'
Other non-chain examples include Bake Street, a brilliant brunch restaurant in Clapton. It attracts all demographics (including me) with its smashburgers and crème brûlée cookies. Gymkhana in Mayfair, one of only four Indian restaurants in the world with at least two Michelin stars, says on its website that its 'chicken, lamb and goat are halal certified'.
Does all this make you queasy? It certainly has that effect on Rupert Lowe, who said in parliament recently: 'We are all eating halal meat without knowing it. I find that morally repugnant. We should ban non-stun slaughter, we should ban halal slaughter and we should ban kosher slaughter.'
Kosher, incidentally, does not permit pre-stunning, while 88 per cent of halal meat is from pre-stunned animals. However, of the 30 million non-stunned slaughtered animals last year, 27 million were halal and three million were kosher.
Lowe wants a full ban, the favourite national solution to things we don't like. Others prefer labelling, which seems fair. If Boris Johnson imposed calorie counts on restaurant menus, then customers are at least entitled to know if their food is halal.
Let's remember, though, that we don't think rationally or consistently about this sort of stuff: consider the poor piggies gassed for bacon, the non-dairy calves snuffed out in days for their uselessness, the quail necks we snap, the chickens stunned agonisingly slowly in electric water baths. Halal is an easy target, but so much about the way animals live and die in this country, particularly ones bred for our chain restaurants, is grim. Eating less but better meat from restaurants or butchers is an obvious way forward, but then an awful hangover occasionally prescribes a sub-tenner fry-up for all of us. We are flawed etc.
As I read the TikTok comments, I also think this: pressuring a restaurant to conform to your culinary wishes is strange. If it is not halal, you can go elsewhere – particularly in London, where there are 40,000 places to eat out, many of which are exclusively halal. And if a restaurant goes that way for commercial reasons, that also betrays a strange, slightly fearful attitude to hospitality. So here's my advice to restaurants: ignore the comments and do what you want. The customer isn't always right.

The slain hood had a grocery delivery business that catered for expat tastes - including Irn Bru. Slain Scots gangster Ross Monaghan ran an online supermarket selling expats a taste from home as a successful sideline before he was murdered in a gangland execution in the Costa Del Sol. The 46-year-old dad-of-two became a director of Costa Shop And Drop after fleeing to Spain following a botched hit attempt outside a Glasgow primary school. As well as running his Monaghan's Irish bar in Fuengirola - where he was murdered alongside pal Eddie Lyons jnr - he also operated an online shop for expat Scots stocking square sausage, Irn Bru and other UK goods. Monaghan, killed after being cornered in his bar in Fuengirola moments after his 43-year-old gang pal Eddie Lyons Jr was shot dead, used the sales slogan: 'Craving Your Favourite British Food?' Other items in stock include started Walkers Crisps, Weetabix, Colman's Mustard and Pot Noodles. The company, which continues to sell products from their Malaga warehouse, also markets toiletries and beauty products. It offers next-day delivery on all orders placed within the Costa del Sol, describing itself online as a 'new and exciting' service and boasting: 'Our prices are often lower than the market leading competitors.' On the firm's website it states: 'Costa Shop & Drop was established in 2020 in order to bring the very best British branded food, drink and household products direct to your home. 'In the midst of a global pandemic, we came to the realisation there was a huge demand for people to order the products they love from the UK and for them to be delivered directly to their home without the need to travel. The idea of Costa Shop & Drop was born! 'Our ethos is customer based and we strive towards meeting the needs of you, the customer! 'Same day ordering and delivery service – 7 days a week!' Monaghan was a senior member of the Lyons gang who Spanish police believe was murdered at Monaghan's bar by a hitman working for the rival Daniel criminal organisation. He was appointed sole director of the Spanish ex-pat shopping firm on February 8 2021. The company began operating on the same date with a registered office on Malaga's Guadalhorce industrial estate a stone's throw from the city airport used by millions of Brits every year. But despite publicising itself across social media, a Daily Record investigation can today reveal official documents show it has failed to file annual tax returns since its launch year. Company registrars have already given the firm a rap over the knuckles for failing to comply with its legal obligations by preventing it from making changes to its official registration sheet. The decision is explained in an official Spanish Companies House document we have had access to called 'Special Situation of Costa Shop and Drop.' The online supermarket home delivery service stopped updating its social media after its registered director and his gangster friend were gunned down at Monaghans Irish Bar in Fuengirola on May 31 following the Champions League final. But on Monday the firm posted for the first time since the gruesome double murder, saying in a post on its official Instagram site titled 'Convenience Delivered' : 'Life's busy - let us handle your shopping! 'Costa Shop & Drop delivers groceries, household essentials, and UK favourites right to your door - even to remote areas. 'Spend less time shopping and more time enjoying life.' A second post the same day alongside a photo of a uniformed delivery man added: 'From fresh produce to household essentials, we've got you covered. 'Plus, enjoy free delivery on orders over 25 euros.' There is no mention of Monaghan on the firm's website or its social media accounts, although the pub he owned is a registered follower of its official Instagram site. Over the weekend it emerged the drinking hole where the Scots hoods were shot dead has reopened under the new name Irish Rover with a 'well-known' local landlord called Clive. Spanish police chiefs described the man who shot the Scots mobsters late last month as a member of the rival Daniel crime clan, despite Police Scotland saying they had 'no intelligence' to suggest the killings were linked to the ongoing gangland turf war here. Malaga-based Spanish National Police chief superintendent Pedro Agudo Novo revealed last week at a packed press conference the dramatic Liverpool arrest was made after detectives discovered the alleged gunman was about to flee his UK bolthole for a 'paradise island tax haven.' He said: 'The double murder was carried out by a professional killer and member of one of the victims' rival gangs.' Saying he had fled Spain via Portugal before taking a plane to Leeds, he added: 'I want to highlight the high level of professionalism of this individual. 'It's not normal for a criminal to react the way he did in the face of this unexpected problem and resolve the situation to continue and pursue his second victim inside the bar and kill him.' Career criminal Monaghan, who fled Scotland for Spain after a failed attempt on his life outside a Glasgow primary school in 2017, was tried but acquitted over the murder of notorious Glasgow hood Kevin 'Gerbil' Carroll at an Asda car park in 2010. In August 2017 he and Eddie Lyons Jr, both members of the Lyons Glasgow crime family, were cleared of being involved in a brutal street attack on three men outside the Campsie bar in Bishopbriggs, East Dunbartonshire. The Fuengirola pub murders followed the fatal shooting nearly seven weeks ago of a 32-year-old British man in nearby Calahonda a 15-minute drive from the Irish bar towards Marbella. He was shot dead around 8pm on April 21 in a professional hit as he headed back to his car after finishing a football match with friends. The victim has not been named but was known to come from Liverpool. The Daily Record has asked management of Costa Shop and Drop to comment.

But its most updated menu for June 2025 shows the cost of the beloved British dish has risen to £11.95 across sites. The price of a single portion of chips at the cafe has also increased by 50p, now costing £2.50. And fans of its brekkie are forking out more too. M&S's All Day Big Breakfast, served with sausages, bacon, soft poached eggs, tomatoes, potato rosti, baked beans and toast, used to cost £9.50. But punters are now paying an extra 45p for the hefty morning meal. Elsewhere, toast with jam and butter now costs £3.75 up from £3.50 and a breakfast ciabatta's was £4.95 but now costs £5.25. The posh retailer has also shaken up what is served on menus, axing its nutty granola bowl priced at £4.25. This has been replaced with a Berry Bliss granola bowl that costs 70p more. An M&S spokesperson told The Sun: " We're committed to providing trusted value for our customers by mitigating and offsetting as much of the current food inflation as we can. Shoppers race to M&S as one of their best selling items which is a mum-essential viral are scanning for just 63 PENCE "We are working hard to ensure we offer a wide range of price points and options for our customers, never compromising on the M&S quality they expect." It is not uncommon for restaurants, cafés and grocery stores to raise prices due to increased operational costs, including hikes to National Insurance contributions and wages. M&S has previously faced ridicule for hiking the cost of popular items, such as Percy Pigs. Shoppers were outraged after it was discovered a 170g of the iconic sweet treat had been hiked by 10p, now costing £2. The bestselling sweets have undergone a 33% price hike since 2017 when a packet cost just £1.50. MORE PRICE RISES M&S is not the only retailer hiking costs for customers. Earlier this year, Morrisons also increased the cost of a number popular menu items in its cafés. The Full Breakfast was hiked by 25p to £7, while its sweet Stacked Pancakes have risen by £4.25 to £4.50. The price of a Ultimate Fish, Chips & Mushy Peas has increased by £7.75 to £8.50. Meanwhile, battered sausages, chips and mushy peas increased from £6 to £6.50. Greggs increased the price of a sausage roll to £1.30 nationally at the start of the year. The rise means that the Brit favourite jumped by more than a third since it cost £1 in 2022. At some travel locations, such as London Bridge, the price of a sausage roll has increased from £1.50 to £1.55. Elsewhere, Costa Coffee has hiked the price of a brew across its hospital concessions. An audit by our investigators found that a small latte or cappuccino costs £3.90 and a medium £4.10 at Medivest's Royal Victoria Infirmary's Costa Coffee outlet in Newcastle. That's a 10p increase on February 2025 prices and a 20p more compared with high street prices just yards down the road.

Liverpool get chance to land cut-price transfer after major decision confirmed
Liverpool have been linked with Lyon star Malick Fofana and the club's financial woes could benefit the Reds, allowing them to secure a cut-price deal for the winger Liverpool could complete a cut-price move for winger Malick Fofana after seven-time French champions Lyon were relegated to Ligue 2 due to the poor state of their finances. The club were provisionally relegated in November, but were given a chance to show that things had improved. However, the National Directorate of Management Control (DNCG) were unconvinced and rubber-stamped Lyon's demotion on Tuesday. American businessman John Textor owns a 77 percent stake in Lyon through his Eagle Football Group, which posted debts of £422million back in October. Lyon have branded the decision to relegate the club "incomprehensible" and have said they will immediately file an appeal. It remains to be seen what the outcome of that appeal will be, but a number of clubs may look to swoop for Lyon's stars if they are no longer a topflight club. And Fofana has been linked with Liverpool already this summer, with Sky Sports Switzerland reporting earlier this month that the Reds' chief scout Barry Hunter is a huge fan of the 20-year-old. The report states that Liverpool are 'genuinely interested' in Fofana, but will have to sell Federico Chiesa before they can make a move for the winger. Chiesa struggled for game-time after joining the club from Juventus last season and has been linked with a return to Italy this summer. And Fofana's former representatives, BF SportsPartner, have claimed that Liverpool would be the player's dream move. They told Africafoot earlier this year: "The choice of heart would be Liverpool. "He has the potential to enter the rotation, and above all, we would like to see him succeed African legends such as Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and El-Hadji Diouf. He has the profile to succeed in the Premier League. "He possesses qualities similar to those of Manchester United's Amad Diallo, namely speed, impact, and the ability to create opportunities. There's no doubt he can shine. "For him, this would be an opportunity to continue his development and, above all, to showcase his talent in a league that favours transitional play. However, he'll have to choose the right club, as competition is fierce across the (English) Channel." Fofana recently changed his representatives, signing with Roc Nation Sports in April. Roc Nation was founded by American rapper Jay-Z and counts a number of high-profile footballers among their clients, including Vinicius Jr, Gabriel Martinelli, Kevin De Bruyne and Endrick.
