Canada coach irate after Vancouver Whitecaps players stricken by illness in Mexico

Whitecaps players Ali Ahmed, Sam Adekugbe and Jayden Nelson missed training after arriving sick in the Canadian camp in Halifax ahead of Saturday's game at Toronto's BMO Field between Canada and Ukraine in the inaugural Canadian Shield tournament.
'They're better now,' Marsch said before speaking at a Canada Ukraine Foundation breakfast Friday. 'They're probably not ready for 90-minute performances (Saturday). But for me, it's appalling that this is the second year in a row that CONCACAF and the powers that be have allowed an MLS team to go down to Mexico for a big final and get poisoned.
'It's ridiculous. Something has to be done to protect these environments.'
The Columbus Crew also complained of stomach illness after their loss at Mexico's CF Pachuca in last year's Champions Cup final. Coach Crew coach Wilfried Nancy confirmed afterwards that nearly the entire roster and coaching staff had been stricken by what the club believed to be food poisoning.

The match-up between B.C. and Edmonton features a duel of Canadian quarterbacks, with Nathan Rourke (born in Victoria, raised in Oakville, Ont.) under centre for the home side and Tre Ford (Niagara Falls) at the controls for the Elks. This is the first time in league history that a Week 1 game has had two starting quarterbacks from Canada. It will be the 12th time since 1950 with a game featuring two Canadian starting quarterbacks. The game also features two rookie head coaches in B.C.'s Buck Pierce and Edmonton's Mark Kilam. The last time two first-year coaches squared off against one another was in 2019, when the Hamillton Tiger-Cats' Orlando Steinauer and Saskatchewan Roughriders ' Craig Dickenson were on the opposites sides. Pierce, 43, was hired in December by new general manager Ryan Rigmaiden. Pierce is a former Lions quarterback and he had been the offensive coordinator of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. CALEDON, Ont. — Mackenzie Hughes has dreamed of this moment. In fact, he's already been in this moment. This time, he has to believe, will be different. Article content For the second straight year, the Dundas, Ont. native heads to Sunday at the RBC Canadian Open with a chance to win his national Open. Article content Article content 'I've dreamt from a young age about doing something like this,' Hughes said after shooting a Saturday 64 to head into the final round at 12-under par, two shots back of the lead. 'I was standard-bearer back at Hamilton in '03 and volunteered at a young age and thought, 'Wow, this is really cool.' Now that I get to actually do it, I tell myself, 'Hey, you've got to lean into this. You've got to embrace it and enjoy it.'' Whether it was the weight of the moment, the thought of accomplishment, or simply golf, he couldn't get it across the finish line, shooting a gut-wrenching 70 in the final round. Article content 'It was easy to kind of look forward and imagine what it would be like to win tournaments 10 minutes from my house and win the Canadian Open,' he recalled. 'It was difficult not to have that in your mind. I think it affected me.' Article content 'I think the hardest thing is to not want it too much, which is hard to turn off. Here I have that going for me, and I think it's important to try and use it.'
