IND vs ENG: Sloppy India let England off the hook at Headingley

The sky was closing in, the lights switched on, as India fought to find their way in this opening Test of the tour. The Sunday theatre at Headingley had its twists and turns.
Earlier under a bright, blue sky the English late middle-order found its mojo to whittle India's lead down to six as Shubman Gill's boys spilled chances that came their way.
And just when it seemed the hosts were on the ascendancy after removing first-innings centurion Yashasvi Jaiswal early, they ran into some stiff resistance by two Indian batters who seemed to be on a mission.

Till one of them — Sai Sudharshan — hit a middle-stump half-volley from Ben Stokes straight into the hands of Zak Crawley at short mid-wicket. Trying to make amends for his first-innings duck on Test debut, Sai, playing extremely late and close to his body, had battled his way to 30.
His 66-run partnership with senior pro KL Rahul (batting on 47), seemed to be taking India to safe shores at the end of Day 3, till the lapse happened on the part of the left-hander.
Rahul, though, at the other end, seemed to be in a different zone. There was a lot of help for the English pace bowlers, but not for once did it seem that the Karnataka batter was under any threat. Beautifully balanced with his bat face low and playing close to his body, Rahul kept the scoreboard ticking.

England let off the hook early
For now, the game is in the balance, but things could have been much rosier for India. They got overnight centurion Ollie Pope (106) cheaply in the morning, paceman Prasidh Krishna being the beneficiary of a loose shot.
With
Jasprit Bumrah
in the middle of a wonderful early spell, India were just one wicket away from taking control. But Prasidh and Mohammed Siraj were poor, to put it mildly. They hardly bowled the full length that is crucial for extracting the early movement, and Brook cashed in on anything short. On Saturday night, he had survived after getting out for a duck off a

no-ball, and it might have given him the belief that luck was on his side.

There's a bit of natural flair in his game too, especially on true surfaces where there is not much spin on offer. He lost his captain Stokes (20), at a crucial juncture when England were 195 runs short of the Indian total, but that didn't stop him from launching a counter-attack. Another dropped catch at 82 by Jaiswal — again off Bumrah — with the second new ball gave him more confidence and at the other end, wicketkeeper-batter Jamie Smith (40) too showed some spunk before throwing it away.

Brook's luck, though, finally ran out at a time when he was one short of his ninth Test century. His attempted hook off Prasidh couldn't clear the deep square-leg boundary as Shardul Thakur completed the catch.
It was after this that India completely lost the plot. Brydon Carse and Chris Woakes tried to get the lead down and went into an attacking mode, as Gill's inexperience as captain came to the fore. With Prasidh and Siraj going for runs, he had to bring Bumrah and Jadeja back but he delayed it for far too long.
The next 50 runs that India allowed to leak might just prove vital in the final outcome. Bumrah (5-83) did finally do the needful after being brought back for another spell, but England by then had enough oxygen to take the fight forward.

Jasprit Bumrah: Carrying India On His Back

Last Updated: Jasprit Bumrah took his 14th five-wicket haul in the first Test against England at Leeds. A statistical look at his 78 wickets since 2024. Jasprit Bumrah continued to excel as the cornerstone of India's bowling attack, securing his 14th five-wicket haul in Test cricket during the first Test against England at Leeds on Sunday, despite four dropped catches off his bowling. Bumrah's outstanding performance enabled India to gain a narrow six-run lead after England were bowled out for 465 by the end of the second session. Since 2024, the seasoned seamer has been a pivotal figure for India. In Tests since 2024, Bumrah has claimed 78 wickets at an average of 15.07, with six five-wicket hauls. In comparison, the rest of India's fast bowlers have collectively taken only 80 wickets at an average of 33.48, with just one five-wicket haul, according to ESPNcricinfo. Jasprit Bumrah once again proved to be a one-man army for India, achieving a five-wicket haul which provided India a slender lead of six runs over England by the end of the second session, dismissing them for 465 runs. With this latest feat, Bumrah now has 12 five-wicket hauls in away Tests, equalling the legendary Kapil Dev, albeit in nearly half the number of matches (Bumrah in 34, Kapil in 66). Notably, Bumrah has five four-wicket hauls in Australia, three in England, three in South Africa, and two in the West Indies. Only two of his five-wicket hauls have come in India. This marks Bumrah's 10th five-wicket haul in SENA nations, making him the first-ever Indian to reach this milestone. Two more five-wicket hauls will see him surpass Pakistan legend Wasim Akram, who has 11 SENA fifers. Bumrah has taken 210 Test wickets in just 46 matches, at an average of 19.33 and an economy of 2.77, with his best figures being 6/27. First Published: June 23, 2025, 16:02 IST

IND vs ENG: Oh no! Shubman Gill in shock as stumps go flying

Shubman Gill (Getty Images) NEW DELHI: India were dealt a major blow early on Day 4 of the first Test at Headingley in Leeds, as captain Shubman Gill was dismissed cheaply after his heroic knock in the first innings. Gill, who had scored a sublime 147 to lead India's charge, was bowled by a stunning delivery from England pacer Brydon Carse. Carse delivered a good-length ball just outside off stump. Gill attempted a cut shot but was cramped for room; the ball took a thick inside edge and crashed into the stumps. He stood in disbelief, glancing back at his shattered stumps more than once before walking off with a dejected look. Carse, meanwhile, roared in celebration, having claimed a prized wicket. Gill had played a true captain's knock in his debut outing as India's Test skipper, registering his maiden Test hundred as captain — a commanding 147 that came at a pivotal time in the five-match series. — englandcricket (@englandcricket) Poised for a potential double century, Gill's innings ended when he attempted an aggressive slog-flick off spinner Shoaib Bashir. With mid-wicket left open, Gill went for the big shot but mistimed it — the ball caught the inside half of his bat and flew straight to Josh Tongue at deep square leg. He seemed to be eyeing 150 in style, but the stroke cut short a stellar innings. Gill has taken over the Test captaincy after Rohit Sharma's retirement from the longest format ahead of the England tour. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Speel gratis in je browser – Geen download of installatie nodig!
