Niigaanwewidam Sinclair sheds light on what school didn't teach him, and how it altered his worldview
Turtle Island is original short story by Niigaanwewidam (Niigaan) Sinclair. It is part of Mirrors, a special series of new, original writing featuring work by the English-language winners of the 2024 Governor General's Literary Awards, presented in partnership with the Canada Council for the Arts.
"[It's] how Canadians have been conditioned (in education, etc) to "see" (or, rather, not see) one another — which creates a self-fulfilling and very self-centred prophecy," Sinclair told CBC Books.
CBC's Radio One will host an episode featuring participants from this original series.
Sinclair won the 2024 Governor General's Literary Award for nonfiction for Wînipêk: Visions of Canada from an Indigenous Centre.
Turtle Island
It's grade six.
Your teacher walks in, hurriedly, with a pile of papers.
"Pull out your pencil crayons," she says. "Today, we are going to learn about Canada."
You open your brand new package of sharpened pencil crayons, purchased for you by your parents last summer. There are twenty-four colours.
Your teacher hands out the still-warm, newly photocopied papers.
"The first assignment is to colour all of Canada," she announces. "Fill it all in. Make sure not to go outside the lines."
You begin, performing long strokes of green across the map.
"Wait," she says, "don't colour over the water. Mark the rivers and lakes with blue."
You quickly and carefully create Canada. That wasn't hard.
"Good," your teacher remarks. "Now, we will do it again."
The teacher hands out another set of the same maps.
"Take out thirteen more colours now," she instructs. "Ten provinces. Three territories. Colour those and do not, I repeat, do not, go outside their boundaries and lines."
You begin. This one will be much harder.
"On yeah, and don't forget blue for the water."

You recall your dad telling you that they only used twelve colours when they were your age — and your grandpa only had to use eleven.
What an easier time they must have had.
With long-practiced skill and precision, you carve out the land, rivers, and lakes. You are very thankful for the rectangles that make up the Prairies. You smile at how little time it takes to do the Maritimes. What takes the longest are all of those tiny little northern islands.
You finish and hand in your two maps, scrawling your name across the top of both.
"Excellent," your teacher says, "as usual."
You walk out of the classroom and into the hallway. You notice the pretty posters and signs adorned with words and numbers you've been taught since you first entered this place. You greet teachers, who basically all look the same. You pass by the office, adorned with a large photo of a king. You walk out the front door, where a flag hangs prominently.
You walk down streets named after explorers and pioneers. You arrive at your beautiful home, built in the form of a barn and complete with a fence surrounding it. You unlock the front door, step inside and immediately feel the warmth of your home, complete with memories, stories and life.
You sit down on your couch and turn on your phone, staring at the small screen. After skipping the advertisements (for cars and alcohol, by the way), you notice something scroll past your eye.
It's a post re-posted by your cousin of armed police officers wrestling with young people. The police officers are armed with guns, helmets and shields. The young people wear masks, camouflage and carry flags you don't recognize.
One carries a sign you can barely make out: "Turtle Island," it says.
Your cousin has added their own editorial: "Thank god. I don't know why these people have to protest and complain all the time."
You are curious. You open up a browser. Quickly, you type in: "Turtle Island."
A map pops up with detailed, intricate and complicated patterns. You read new names of places you thought you knew in letters and languages you don't. It is then you realize these are nations, communities and families.
You notice large swaths of territories overlap. How can there be some lines that matter and some that don't, you ask yourself.
You see hundreds of nations you never knew existed. Thousands of cultures. Millions of years.
Looking up, the world around looks different.
Not the simple place you thought it was.
Now you see it.

ULUKHAKTOK, NT, June 13, 2025 /CNW/ - At a celebration in Ulukhaktok today, Canada Post unveiled an upcoming stamp honouring Indigenous leader, Julia Haogak Ogina. The accomplished Inuit drum dance teacher has devoted her life to maintaining the culture and language of her ancestors. Ogina is known for her efforts to retrieve and preserve drum dance songs and the creation of a regional language framework and programs promoting oral learning and knowledge transfer. This stamp is one of three Indigenous Leaders stamps that will be issued on June 20 – the day before National Indigenous Peoples Day. The set is the fourth in Canada Post's multi-year Indigenous Leaders series. Ogina's life and legacy Born in 1962 in Ulukhaktok, N.W.T., Ogina grew up learning the customs and traditions of her ancestors through dancing, singing and storytelling. As more people in her community began moving into centralized communities, children were sent to residential schools and people had to learn English to find work, Ogina began noticing gaps in her own knowledge. She worked as a translator and research assistant on The Northern Copper Inuit: A History (1996). The project, carried out through consultations with community Elders, spanned the early history of the Ulukhaktok region to early and late contact periods and into modern-day life. Around 2006, she became the programs coordinator of Elders, Language & Culture for the Kitikmeot Inuit Association, whose mandate is "to manage the lands and resources that support traditional and cultural values." In her position, she emphasizes oral learning and the transfer of knowledge via community. In 2017, she helped publish Huqqullaarutit Unipkaangit (Stories Told through Drum Dance Songs). The project involved a decade-long consultation with Elders to retrieve and preserve drum dance songs – which she sees as a conduit for ancestral knowledge and "a window into all the strengths of our people." Ogina has been honoured within her community and on a national level for her work. She received an Outstanding Achievement in Language Revitalization award from the Inuit Uqausinginnik Taiguusiliuqtiit in 2017 and she was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal in 2020. About the stamp The stamp features a photograph of Ogina in her drum dancing attire at the festival, QAGGIQ 2021 in Iqaluit, Nunavut. It is designed by Andrew Perro, featuring photography by Matisse Harvey for Archives Radio-Canada, and printed by Lowe-Martin. The issue includes a booklet of six Permanent™ stamps, an Official First Day Cover and a souvenir sheet. The cancellation site is Ulukhaktok, N.W.T. (Ogina's birthplace), and the cancellation mark bears an image of a traditional drum. About the Indigenous Leaders stamp series The Indigenous Leaders series was launched in 2022 and highlights the contributions of Inuit, Métis and First Nations leaders who dedicated their lives to preserving their culture and improving the quality of life of Indigenous Peoples in Canada. This year, Canada Post will issue three stamps in honour of Julia Haogak Ogina, Sophie McDougall and Bruce Starlight. Canada's Humanity Index Falls into the Red Zone
Quebec Drops from First to Last in the Country QUEBEC CITY, June 10, 2025 /CNW/ - The perceived humanity in our society is declining. The Humanity Index, a citizen-driven barometer that measures perceptions of humanity within society, shows an alarming drop. In just eight months, from August 2024 to April 2025, the average score given by Canadians to their society's humanity fell from 64.9 to 59.1 out of 100 — crossing into the red zone, a symbolic threshold of societal well-being. Created to assess how citizens perceive social climate, kindness, solidarity, and dignity in their daily lives, the Index reveals a troubling reality: across the country, people believe our society is becoming less humane. "What we're measuring here is a loss of collective values. Less solidarity, less kindness, more indifference. The drop in the Index is not just a number — it reflects a growing social unease," says Pierre Côté, founder and CEO of the Humanity Index. Quebec: From First to Last While the decline is nationwide, the most dramatic drop occurred in Quebec, where the Index plunged by 9.6 points, from 68.0 to 58.4. The province, which held the top position in August 2024, now ranks last in the country. Maritime Provinces: The Only Ones Above the Line The Atlantic provinces are the only region in Canada where the evaluation of societal humanity remains above the 60-point pass threshold (61.7). Widening Gap Between Personal and Collective Humanity Canadians continue to view their personal humanity positively (75.1 out of 100), but this score has also declined (–2.5 points). The gap between personal and societal perception has now reached 15.8 points, exposing a deep divide between how individuals view themselves versus their society. Women are more critical of society (58.8) than men (59.3), but rate their personal humanity higher (77.3 vs. 72.9). People aged 55 and over remain the most confident in both societal and personal humanity. About the Humanity Index The Humanity Index is a citizen initiative that measures how humanity is perceived in society. It is based on surveys conducted with a broad sample of the Canadian population. This edition is based on a survey carried out by Léger in April 2025, involving 35,353 respondents across the country.
