Brits start well at Wimbledon as former finalist quits
On an opening day when the four Australian women in action all lost it was tempting to claim the boilover victory by Katie Boulter, aka Mrs de Minaur-to-be, over No.9 seed Paula Badosa.
The British No.2 beat the Spaniard 6-2 3-6 6-4 on Centre Court for one of the biggest wins of her career, and perhaps gave fiance Alex a fillip ahead of his opening match on Tuesday.
It was a good day for the host nation with rising star Sonay Kartal also notching a shock, defeating 20th seed and former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko 7-5 2-6 6-2.
Emma Raducanu won too and will now meet the 2023 champion, Marketa Vondrousova, who beat 32nd-seeded American McCartney Kessler 6-1 7-6 (7-3).
Aryna Sabalenka eased into the second round by defeating Canadian grand slam debutant Carson Branstine 6-1 7-5.
The World No.1 missed last year's championship due to a shoulder injury and has never been past the semi-finals.
It was an unhappy day for two-time Wimbledon finalist Ons Jabeur who retired due to breathing difficulties after being in tears during her first-round match against Viktoriya Tomova.
The 30-year-old, who has endured a torrid time with injuries, required a medical timeout in the first set. She managed to play on in scorching temperatures before withdrawing while trailing 7-6 (7-5) 2-0.
Jabeur, who was beaten in the 2022 and 2023 finals at SW19, has plummeted to 59 in the rankings amid ongoing fitness setbacks.
"It doesn't really help me with my confidence," said Jabeur. "I keep pushing myself, even though it was a very tough season for me, so I hope I can feel better and see what's going to happen."
Last year's runner-up Jasmine Paolini recovered from losing the opening set to beat Latvian world No. 402 Anastasija Sevastova 2-6 6-3 6-2.
Australian Open champion Madison Keys also survived a scare, coming from a set down to scrape past Elena-Gabriela Ruse 6-7 (4-7) 7-5 7-5.
Seeds Elina Svitolina (14) and Amanda Anisimova (13) also progressed, the latter handing out a 'double-bagel' 6-0 6-0 defeat to Yulia Putintseva.

Kyrgios spotted in former world No.1's box during win over Aussie
Nick Kyrgios has been spotted at Wimbledon after all despite pulling out with injury and losing his commentary gig. The Australian star was a surprise presence in Naomi Osaka's box during her first-round win over Aussie Talia Gibson on Court 18. Osaka, still hoping to rediscover the form that once made her world No.1 and a four-time grand slam champion, saved set points and fought on to claim a 6-4 7-6 (7-4) victory — then revealed she had no idea Kyrgios was watching. He missed the start but appeared among the Japanese star's contingent, which includes high-profile coach Patrick Mouratoglou, midway through the second set. 'Oh he was there? I didn't hear anything,' Osaka told reporters. 'I jokingly told someone 'hey, I know Nick's around, maybe he wants to come to my match'. 'But I was joking. Because I know we're like two completely different players. 'Honestly I would've loved to come to his matches because I know he's pretty fun. I think that's also a big part of why we're different. 'I know he tells his box what to do and he probably would've noticed if I was in there, and I zone out most of the time. That's a little embarrassing that he was there. But yeah, I guess it was cool that he was there.' Naomi Osaka speaks with her high-profile coach Patrick Mouratoglou. Credit: AAP Kyrgios is managed by Osaka's agency and the pair are set to team up for the new-look US Open mixed doubles event later this year. They have previously played an exhibition doubles match together at the New York grand slam. 'I am glad he came to my match,' Osaka said at Wimbledon. 'I hope in some way maybe he felt — I wouldn't be bold enough to say 'inspired', but I hope he can relate a little bit to the things I do too.' Gibson made it tough for Osaka but twice missed out when serving to take the contest into a third set. 'I was a little bit disappointed I wasn't able to quite take it to a third set,' Gibson said. 'But I will take a huge amount of confidence from that match, being able to show myself that I'm able to fully compete with a champion like her.' Meanwhile, Kyrgios has not played at Wimbledon since losing the 2022 final to Novak Djokovic. Cruelled by wrist and knee injuries, he returned to tennis during the Australian summer but has had a stop-start season. He planned to skip the French Open then agreed to play doubles with Jordan Thompson, only to have to pull out with another setback. Kyrgios was then forced to withdraw from his planned grass-court campaign. But unlike last year he has not picked up a commentary gig, having gone unsigned by the BBC following last year's controversial appointment to the team. 'It's unfortunate but it's probably their loss more than mine,' he told The Guardian. 'When someone's beaten Federer, Nadal, Murray and Djokovic and has incredible insights, it's very strange you wouldn't want that person adding knowledge to tennis fans. 'I'm sure our paths will cross again. I only ever want to add humour, some knowledge and some great atmosphere.'

AFLW superstar Monique Conti and fellow Richmond player Rhyan Mansell go public with new relationship
Australian sporting superstar Monique Conti and fellow Richmond player Rhyan Mansell appear to have gone public with their new relationship. Conti posted a selfie of the pair smiling in the mirror and tagged Mansell, writing 'hehe'. He shared the same photo with a green heart. It's unclear how long they have been together, but they have exchanged cheeky comments on social media. Conti recently posted a series of photos from her trip to Bali with Mansell leaving a smiley face in the comments section, to which she replied with 'mwah'. Conti is in the middle of AFLW pre-season training ahead of Round 1 in just over six weeks. The superstar midfielder will be looking to continue her stunning career that already has her among the competition's best. The 25-year-old already has a host of accolades to her name, including the AFLW best and fairest award in 2023 and the best on ground medal in the 2018 grand final with former club Western Bulldogs. Conti won the club best and fairest in her final year at the Bulldogs before joining the Tigers ahead of the 2020 season. She has since won the club best and fairest in all six seasons at the Tigers. As well as being one of the AFLW's greatest ever players, Conti has also carved out a successful basketball career in the WNBL. Despite prioritising AFLW, she has still won the WNBL championship with the Southside Flyers. She played the most recent season for Geelong United. Meanwhile, Mansell has played 65 matches for the Tigers since his debut in 2021, establishing himself as a key member of the young forward line with his pressure and goal sense. Conti, 25, was previously in a relationship with former Richmond player Sydney Stack, but that ended in 2020.

Amadou Seini blunder in Australia vs Cameroon: Player dunks ball in his own net to hand Australia miracle win at the under-19 basketball World Cup
Australian Emus coach Robbie McKinlay had a list of plays drawn up with just 48 seconds left in the fourth quarter and his team down by six points to Cameroon at the under-19 basketball World Cup. McKinlay's playbook wasn't needed to win the game, however. Cameroon's Amadou Seini dunked the ball in his own basket to help send the game into overtime and Australia staged a remarkable comeback win. Seini's mistake is extremely rare, but it has happened before in basketball. In an exhibition game in 2013, University of Kentucky player Joe Young tried to save the ball from going out of bounds and as he flicked it behind his back, it landed in his own net. Seini's act was remarkable in that the centre received the baseline pass from his own player after an Australian basket and immediately dunked to gift the Emus two points and reduce the margin to four. Alex Dickeson hit a crucial three-pointer for Australia with four seconds remaining to tie the game and send it into double overtime. The Emus eventually secured a 101-96 victory with Roman Siulepa and Dash Daniels each scoring 22 points. The Emus are in the toughest group in the tournament, paired with favourites the USA, Cameroon and France. Australia had lost on the first day of the tournament against the USA by 15 points, meaning they needed a win against Cameroon to keep their tournament hopes alive ahead of the final group game against France. Apart from gifting the Emus two valuable points, Seini had enjoyed an outstanding game, finishing with 15 points and an under-19 World Cup all-time high of 25 rebounds, sharing the record with Australia's former NBA star and Sydney Kings owner Andrew Bogut.
