OCCI unveils 14 initiatives to boost business
Muscat – The Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry (OCCI) announced 14 initiatives on Wednesday aimed at enhancing the business environment and promoting economic diversification across the governorates, in line with Oman Vision 2040.
The initiatives were developed in collaboration with the Oman Vision 2040 Implementation Follow-up Unit as part of a strategic development cycle. The announcement was made during the closing ceremony of a three-day workshop on integrated economic development attended by senior government officials, OCCI board members, and sectoral committee heads.
The initiatives focus on three key pillars: Improving the business environment, fostering economic partnerships in the governorates, and broadening the scope of economic diversification. Six initiatives fall under the first pillar, while the second and third pillars each include four initiatives.
Zakaria bin Abdullah al Saadi, CEO of OCCI, stated that a detailed implementation plan has been developed in coordination with the Oman Vision 2040 Follow-up Unit to ensure these initiatives deliver the desired impact. 'This structured approach is aimed at strengthening the chamber's role in supporting the private sector,' he said.
Faisal bin Abdullah al Rawas, Chairman of the OCCI Board of Directors, emphasised the chamber's commitment to reinforcing the private sector's role in the national economy.
'These initiatives reflect a collaborative effort involving experts, business owners, and stakeholders to align with Oman Vision 2040's sustainable economic growth targets,' he said.
Saadi added that the development cycle introduced a new collaborative framework between the public and private sectors. He noted that the initiatives were crafted to prioritise national economic growth and sustainability, ensuring alignment with Oman's strategic goals.
The OCCI's efforts aim to foster stronger partnerships and provide a supportive environment for businesses to thrive, further contributing to the diversification and resilience of Oman's economy.

NEDC strengthens future-readiness amid grid expansion challenges
MUSCAT: Nama Electricity Distribution Company (NEDC) has pledged to vigorously address any vulnerabilities - legal, digital, and operational—that could impact the company's future resilience and its alignment with Vision 2040 energy goals. Potential challenges, cited in its 2024 Annual Report, include smart meter data inconsistencies, delayed SCADA integration in rural zones, and ongoing legal disputes tied to land access for substation projects—factors that could delay Oman's grid modernisation efforts and expose the company to compliance risks. 'Readings from smart meters were occasionally inconsistent due to discrepancies during the integration of legacy platforms post-merger,' the report notes. While NEDC has deployed over 1 million smart meters—achieving 75% national coverage—the integration of disparate systems inherited from the 2023 utility consolidation has created data quality gaps. This raises concerns over billing accuracy, energy auditing, and real-time load management, particularly as the utility sector becomes increasingly digitised. In parallel, the report reveals delays in achieving full operational control across NEDC's diverse service regions. 'Progress in integrating remote monitoring with regional control centres is ongoing, with delays in full real-time observability in rural zones,' the report says. This limited grid visibility in certain governorates means parts of the network remain vulnerable to manual fault detection, delaying outage responses and reducing the effectiveness of smart infrastructure investments. The report also discloses that 'legal proceedings related to disputes over right-of-way and land access have been initiated in two governorates'. These disputes have the potential to impact grid expansion timelines, especially for primary substations serving planned residential and industrial areas. Despite these risks, NEDC maintained its core performance indicators, including RO 307 million in revenue and a 3.6% increase in customer accounts. The company has also invested RO 154 million in capital expansion, while achieving an Omanisation rate of 98.6%. Yet the road ahead will require more than technical upgrades. Stronger regulatory alignment, proactive community engagement on land access, and cyber-governance reforms will be crucial to ensure NEDC not only grows—but does so sustainably.

New public transport hub to come up in Buraimi
Buraimi – The Governorate of Buraimi and Mwasalat signed an agreement last week to establish a new integrated public transport station in the wilayat of Buraimi. The project forms part of efforts to expand sustainable mobility infrastructure under Oman Vision 2040. The new transport station will be developed in the North Aqda area on a 56,000sqm plot, serving both intercity and local routes. Facilities will include a smart taxi terminal, micro-mobility options, air-conditioned waiting areas, commercial and logistics spaces, parking for buses and private vehicles, as well as dedicated offices for operations. The agreement was signed in the presence of H E Eng Khamis bin Mohammed al Shamakhi, Undersecretary for Transport in the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology. Dr Hamad bin Ahmed al Busaidi, Governor of Buraimi, signed on behalf of the governorate, while Eng Bader bin Mohammed al Nadabi, CEO of Mwasalat, represented the company. Under the terms of the agreement, Mwasalat will take on technical responsibilities including design specifications and implementation oversight. The company will also manage and operate the station once it is completed. The governorate will provide funding and manage regulatory aspects such as land allocation and zoning approvals. Busaidi said the station would support a shift in the public transport landscape in Buraimi. 'The station will serve a large number of passengers, especially with the 12 daily trips between Muscat and Buraimi,' he said. 'It will also reinforce Buraimi's position as a key transit point along the Muscat-Abu Dhabi corridor.' Eng Nadabi said the project also has commercial potential. 'A tender for the station's development and operation will be issued shortly,' he said. 'Construction is due to begin within three months and is expected to be completed in three years.' The initiative aligns with Oman's national objective to enhance domestic connectivity and promote governorates as regional centres for transport and logistics.

Oman's new hybrid-electric plane to reshape intra-city travel
MUSCAT: LYNEports, the global leader in digital infrastructure planning for vertiports and advanced air mobility (AAM), has entered into a strategic partnership with AeroVecto, Oman's first hybrid-electric VTOL (Vertical Take-Off and Landing) aircraft developer. The collaboration aims to build an intelligent, scalable urban air mobility ecosystem tailored to Oman's evolving transport needs. At the heart of this partnership is Shuttle, AeroVecto's flagship hybrid-electric VTOL aircraft, engineered for short-range, high-capacity public transport within and between cities. Designed with regional climate resilience, passenger comfort, and operational efficiency in mind, Shuttle is poised to reimagine intra-city mobility across the Sultanate and the wider GCC. Under this collaboration, LYNEports will provide its AI-powered planning platform to simulate, design, and optimise a robust network of vertiports for Shuttle operations. This includes site selection, airspace modeling, environmental analysis, and transport integration — ensuring that each vertiport meets aviation-grade standards of safety, regulatory compliance, and scalability. 'We're excited to support AeroVecto in bringing their innovative vision to life,' said Rasha Alshami, CEO of LYNEports. 'Their commitment to solving real public transport challenges in the region aligns perfectly with our mission to make advanced air mobility infrastructure accessible, safe, and thoughtfully designed from day one.' Fahad Al Riyami, CEO of AeroVecto, added: 'Our vision is to make high-capacity aerial commuting a practical and sustainable reality for cities across Oman and the GCC. Partnering with LYNEports allows us to fast-track the planning and implementation of our Shuttle network with world-class precision and foresight.' The partnership will initially focus on feasibility assessments and integrated simulations for urban corridors in Muscat, Sohar, and Salalah. Long-term plans include supporting Oman's national strategy for green mobility and smart city infrastructure as outlined in Vision 2040. By uniting cutting-edge aircraft technology with digital infrastructure innovation, LYNEports and AeroVecto aim to position Oman as a regional front-runner in urban air mobility.
