Kedah Education Dept told to monitor teacher's family hurt in Gerik crash
NIBONG TEBAL: The Education Ministry has instructed the Kedah Education Department to monitor the condition of a teacher couple and their two children who were involved in a crash near Tasik Banding, Gerik, early yesterday.
Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said she was informed that the teacher couple and their children are currently receiving treatment at Baling Hospital, and their welfare is under the ministry's supervision.
"Yesterday, we were informed that the Gerik accident also involved a teacher, who was driving a Perodua Alza, and his family.
"So we have instructed the Kedah Education Department to take responsibility and closely monitor the condition of the teacher and his family.
"This teacher is currently receiving treatment along with his family. In terms of welfare and monitoring, the matter is under the ministry's attention," she told reporters at the Student Reception Ceremony for the Sixth Form Education Programme at the Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) Engineering Campus here today.
Fadhlina said this when she was asked to comment on the assistance to be given to the teacher couple who were injured along with their two children in the accident.
In the 1.10am incident yesterday, the Perodua Alza car driven by teacher, Mohd Lutfi Radzi, 37, was rammed by a bus carrying 42 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students from Jerteh, Terengganu to the university campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak.
The tragic incident killed 15 students and injured another 26, while the wife and two children of the teacher driving the Perodua Alza were also injured and are currently receiving treatment at Baling Hospital.
Also injured were the 40-year-old bus driver and his 54-year-old assistant.
Meanwhile, Fadhlina said that following the accident, she reiterated that the Education Ministry has strict standard operating procedures (SOPs) in place regarding the use of buses for student trips or excursions outside school grounds.
"These SOPs have been clearly outlined through official letters, including approval requirements and specific conditions such as visit timings. For example, if a programme must end by midnight or involves an overnight stay, there are specific rules that must be followed.
"Teachers and accompanying personnel, as well as vehicles transporting students, must meet several specifications and pass safety inspections before students are allowed to travel with the group.
"At the ministry level, we take note of such incidents and continue to re-emphasise these rules and reminders to all schools and accompanying teachers ahead of future trips," she said.

One survivor, Abdul Wafiy Kamarudin, 23, when sharing the harrowing moments with Bernama, said the accident had such a strong impact that he was flung out of the bus and most terrifyingly, a victim's body landed on him. Wafiy, a sixth-semester student pursuing a Bachelor's Degree in Art Education, said he was looking at his mobile phone in the dimness of the night but could feel the bus was moving quickly as it descended a winding, hilly road. The bus driver stopped briefly to check the vehicle's brakes before continuing the journey, and suddenly at around 1am, the bus overturned, causing me to be thrown out of the window and into a drain. Meanwhile, Mohd Zaki Ismail, the father to victim Rohadatul Aisy, 21, said his daughter contacted him at about 3am to say that she had been involved in an accident. "At that time, she (Rohadatul Aisy) said she was unable to move due to pain in both her neck and waist but a friend had helped carry her out of the bus. "I immediately left Kampung Gong Badang, Besut in Terengganu at 8am and arrived at the Gerik Hospital to learn that my daughter suffered a fractured hip," he said. He also said that Rohadatul is receiving further treatment at the Besut Hospital, while he and his wife, Norliza Ghazali, are waiting to retrieve their child's personal belongings from the Gerik IPD. In the early morning incident yesterday, 15 UPSI students died when a chartered bus from Jertih to Tanjung Malim overturned after colliding with a Perodua Alza at JRTB near Tasik Banding. IPOH: The crash at Km53 of the East-West Highway in Gerik, which claimed 15 lives early yesterday morning, marked a dark moment in the 18-year career of Malaysian Civil Defence Force (CDF) officer Muhammad Yusuf Nuruddin. Initially unaware of the severity of the tragedy, involving a chartered bus and a Perodua Alza, near Tasik Banding, the personnel, from Hulu Perak, believed it was just a routine accident without any casualties. When he and three other personnel of Hulu Perak CDF - Mohd Zamri Taib, 47, Muhammad Isma Aliff Mohd Asri, 24, and Muhammad Mainun Azim Azman, 28 - were informed that the crash had resulted in 15 fatalities, they were momentarily stunned. "I recall bus-related incidents before - one overturned and another veered off the road, but none involved any fatalities. "This time, it was different, and it's something I will never forget. "I didn't even get to see the condition of the deceased victims because my priority was to provide immediate aid.
