Trump accuses both Israel and Iran of violating US-brokered ceasefire

Saudi Gazette3 days ago

BRUSSELS — Both Iranians and Israelis reported bombing overnight and into the morning despite US President Donald Trump announcing he brokered a ceasefire deal to take effect on Tuesday morning.
On Tuesday, the Israeli defense minister accused Iran of breaking a ceasefire deal and announced that the military would retaliate, shortly after Iran fired two missiles into Israel— apparently violating the fragile ceasefire that had taken hold just hours earlier.
Israel's government announced it had agreed to a ceasefire on Tuesday morning, hours after trading a barrage of overnight strikes with Iran.
Tuesday morning began with widespread confusion over when the ceasefire deal, first announced by US President Donald Trump the night prior, would take effect.
Iran's foreign minister, Abbas Aragchi, tweeted that "provided that the Israeli regime stops its illegal aggression against the Iranian people...we have no intention to continue our response afterwards." adding that "The final decision on the cessation of our military operations will be made later."
Iranian state media later announced that a ceasefire was indeed in effect, with Trump delcaring the ceasefire had "taken effect" shortly after 7am CET.
Strikes killed nine in Iran and five in Israel in the early hours of Tuesday, after the ceasefire agreement was announced but had not yet taken hold.
In Tehran, the strikes came shortly after 4 am local time — the time Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi had indicated Iran would halt its attacks if Israel stopped its airstrikes.
Trump's declaration of a 'complete and total ceasefire' followed Iran's limited missile strike on a US military base in Qatar on Monday, a response to American airstrikes on Iranian nuclear sites. — Euronews

Photos of the Busy Ports on the Yangtze River After China-US Trade Friction Cools

Activity at Chinese ports has rebounded since US President Donald Trump and China's leader Xi Jinping agreed to resume trade talks and put off imposing massive tariffs on each other's exports. That's true also of inland ports along China's mighty Yangtze River. The Chongqing International Logistics Hub Park, more than 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) from the nearest sea port, serves as a critical element of a land–sea trading corridor and part of China's vast Belt and Road Initiative connecting with countries across Europe, Africa, and Asia. About 20 trains leave every day, some for Russia and others toward Europe via Central Asia. Top exports include electronics, machinery, and electric vehicles, including sedans assembled at Avatr Technology's factory in Chongqing, long a major river port and industrial center. Imports include auto parts, luxury goods, and medical equipment. Some 900 kilometers (560 miles) downriver from Chongqing, the Yangluo port is another major distribution center connecting China's eastern seaboard with its vast inland regions. In 2024 it handled 2 million TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units), but in April activity nearly stopped as trade was disrupted by the tariffs as Trump escalated his trade war. It resumed from mid-May after China and the US agreed to step back and talk rather than to escalate trade tensions further.

Guardian Council in Iran approves law to end cooperation with nuclear watchdog

TEHRAN: Iran's powerful Guardian Council on Thursday approved legislation that would suspend Tehran's cooperation with the UN nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency. The proposed suspension, which will now be submitted to President Masoud Pezeshkian for final ratification, would 'ensure full respect for the national sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Islamic Republic of Iran ... especially with regard to uranium enrichment,' spokesman Hadi Tahan Nazif said. The watchdog passed a resolution two weeks ago accusing Iran of non-compliance with its nuclear obligations. A suspension of cooperation with the agency would deny UN inspectors access to Iran's uranium enrichment operations at Fordow, Isfan and Natanz, which were attacked in US bombing raids last Sunday. Meanwhile confusion continued to surround the location of Iran's stockpile of about 400 kg of highy enriched uranium. Satellite images from before Sunday's attacks showed a long line of vehicles outside the Fordow plant. Some experts believe Iran used the convoy to move the uranium and other nuclear components, and is hiding them elsewhere. However, US President Donald Trump and his Defense Secretary Peter Hegseth both insisted on Thursday that the stockpile at Fordow had been destroyed. 'The cars and small trucks at the site were those of concrete workers trying to cover up the top of the shafts. Nothing was taken out,' Trump said. Hegseth said: 'I'm not aware of any intelligence that I've reviewed that says things were not where they were supposed to be.'

Spanish PM Urges EU to Suspend Cooperation Deal with Israel

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said on Thursday that Gaza was in a 'catastrophic situation of genocide' before an EU summit in Brussels, urging for suspending deals with Israel, according to AFP. Call for Suspending Deal with Israel Sanchez called on the European Union to immediately suspend its cooperation deal with Israel. These remarks represent Sanchez's strongest condemnation to date after a lot of critical statements against Israel and its genocide in Gaza. The Spanish PM shed light on a recent human rights report by the EU's diplomatic service which tackled 'the catastrophic situation of genocide unfolding in Gaza.' Importantly, the report mentioned 'indications' that Israel was breaching its human rights obligations under the deal, which forms the basis for trade ties. Sanchez said it was 'more than obvious' that Israel was violating its obligations and that the bloc should suspend the cooperation deal 'immediately.' Furthermore, the report tackled Israel's blockade of humanitarian aid, the high number of civilian casualties, attacks on journalists and the massive displacement and destruction caused by the war. Sanchez added that 'it makes no sense' that the bloc has imposed 18 rounds of sanctions on Russia for its invasion of Ukraine but, 'in a double standard, is not even capable of suspending an association deal.' Call for Exclusion from Eurovision In May, Sanchez said that the Eurovision song contest should exclude Israel over its war in Gaza. He also expressed solidarity with 'the people of Palestine who are experiencing the injustice of war and bombardment.' Russians have not been allowed to take part in the competition because of Russia's invasion on Ukraine. 'Therefore, Israel shouldn't either, because what we cannot allow is double standards in culture,' Sanchez said at an event in Madrid. During his speech, the Spanish PM stressed Spain's commitment to applying the international law and human rights nothing that 'Europe's should be too.' Calling Israel a 'Genocidal State' Sanchez previously called Israel a 'genocidal state' during his speech in the Spanish parliament on Wednesday, stating that Madrid 'does not do business' with such a country. The PM's remarks came as a response to a provocative comment from an anti-Israel member of parliament who condemned Spain's trade relations with what he called the 'genocide state' of Israel. Sanchez's comments sparked anger in Israel, prompting Israel's Foreign Ministry to summon the Spanish Ambassador, Ana Salomon, for a formal reprimand in Jerusalem. 'Following the severe remarks made by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, the Spanish ambassador to Israel has been summoned for a reprimand meeting at the Foreign Ministry in Jerusalem tomorrow,' the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
