NIA probe ordered into rowdy-sheeter Suhas Shetty's murder
MANGALURU: The Union government has ordered a probe by National Investigation Agency (NIA) into the murder of rowdy-sheeter and Hindutva activist Suhas Shetty. The development is seen as a setback to the Congress government in Karnataka which had refused to hand over the case to NIA stating that police are competent enough to investigate it. An order from Ministry of Home Affairs said the Central Government opines that a Scheduled Offence under the National Investigation Agency Act, 2008, has been committed in the instant case. It added that with regard to the gravity of the offence, its national ramifications as well as the need to unearth the larger conspiracy, it is required to be investigated by the National Investigation Agency in accordance with the National Investigation Agency Act, 2008. 'Therefore, in exercise of the powers conferred under sub-section (5) of section 6 read with section 8 of the National Investigation Agency Act, 2008, the Central Government hereby directs the National Investigation Agency to take up investigation of the aforesaid case,' said the order. Suhas Shetty, an accused in two murders, was travelling in a car when he was hacked to death by a gang of persons in Bajpe Police Station limits near Mangaluru city on May 1.

NIA to take up ‘Hindu worker' Suhas Shetty murder case
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) Saturday announced that the National Investigation Agency (NIA) will take over the probe into the murder of Suhas Shetty, a Karnataka Bajrang Dal leader and the prime accused in the 2022 murder of 23-year-old Mohammed Fazil. Shetty was killed in Mangaluru on May 1 by a group of men. The decision to hand over the case to the NIA follows repeated demands from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which had earlier petitioned Karnataka Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot regarding the matter. The BJP had accused the Congress-led Karnataka government of being soft on the perpetrators. Suhas Shetty's mother, Sulochana Shetty, had also called for the case to be transferred to the NIA. She had alleged deliberate mishandling of the probe at the state level. Suhas Shetty was killed near Kinnipadavu Cross within the Bajpe police station limits while travelling with five associates. Their vehicle was intercepted by attackers reportedly using a Swift car and a pickup truck. The assailants used lethal weapons to assault Suhas Shetty, inflicting fatal injuries. The Mangaluru city police have so far arrested 12 persons in connection with the murder. Suhas Shetty had previously been named the main accused in the murder of Mohammed Fazil, an MBA graduate who was killed by masked men in Surathkal on July 28, 2022. Fazil's murder was allegedly carried out as retaliation for the killing of BJP Yuva Morcha worker Praveen Nettaru. According to the police at the time, Suhas Shetty and five others had planned the attack, aiming to 'kill someone' to avenge Nettaru's death. Suhas Shetty had five criminal cases registered against him – four in Mangaluru city and one in the Dakshina Kannada district. He was accused of murder, robbery, and criminal intimidation, among others. On Sunday, Leader of Opposition R Ashoka welcomed the move of the MHA and thanked Union Home Minister Amit Shah. 'We thank Amit Shah for handing over the Mangaluru Hindu worker and brother Suhas Shetty murder case to NIA,' he said. 'There is a big religious fanatic force in the coastal region engaging in murder, communal riots. We had demanded that the Governor hand over the case to the NIA. This is a good development and a win for the BJP,' Ashoka added.

Anti-Terror Agency NIA To Probe Killing Of Murder-Accused Suhas Shetty In Mangaluru: Report
New Delhi: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) will probe the murder of Hindu activist Suhas Shetty by a group of assailants in Mangaluru, Karnataka, last month, official sources said on Sunday. The Union Home Ministry has asked the federal anti-terror agency to probe the case related to the "targeted killing" of Shetty "with the intention to create terror in the minds of people", they said. Citing a home ministry communique in this regard, the sources said the accused involved in the murder case are allegedly members of the Popular Front of India (PFI), a banned outfit. "The NIA has received an order from the Union Home Ministry to investigate the case. The process to register the case is underway," a source said. The NIA probe is required due to the gravity of the offence, its national ramifications as well as the need to unearth the larger conspiracy, the sources said, citing the home ministry order. Shetty was killed at Kinnipadavu in Bajpe on the outskirts of Mangaluru on May 1. He was travelling in a vehicle with his associates when five-six assailants, who came in a car and a pick-up vehicle, intercepted him. The assailants attacked Shetty with sharp weapons, causing grievous injuries. He was rushed to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries The gruesome attack was captured on a CCTV camera, which showed the assailants attacking him with machetes and swords. Shetty was reportedly associated with various local Hindutva groups and had several cases registered against him, including for assault, murder and unlawful assembly, according to the local police. Karnataka Police on June 3 arrested Abdul Razak (59), a resident of Mangaluru, for allegedly conspiring and sheltering the prime accused in Shetty's murder case. The total number of arrests made in this case stood at 16, police said. According to police, Razak is the father of Mohammed Muzammil, one of the key accused, and the father-in-law of Nausad Vamanjoor alias Chotte Nausad, another suspect in the case. He allegedly conspired with them and others at his residence to plan the murder and later helped the accused evade arrest, according to the police.
