The news of the acquisition and subsequent layoffs at Polygon broke abruptly on social media, with numerous Polygon writers and editors reporting the sudden termination of their employment. According to a report by 404 Media, the acquisition by a company with ties to the pornography industry has left many within the gaming journalism community reeling.
This development comes amidst an already challenging period for media, with widespread layoffs impacting various publications for years. Video game publications have been particularly affected recently, with the closure of the legendary magazine Game Informer in 2024 and layoffs at Gamespot and other outlets. However, Polygon, a brand built from the ground up by Vox, with its substantial staff, reputable reporters, significant YouTube presence, and what was perceived as stable leadership, did not appear to be on the brink of a sale and mass layoffs.

Starting with a foosball enthusiasts group that included his brother Sam and Concordia University students Matt Keezer and Stephane Manos, Youssef and his partners recognized a lucrative opportunity in online adult entertainment. This led to the creation of sites like Jugg World, Ass Listing, KeezMovies, and XXX Rated Chicks. Jugg World eventually evolved into an affiliate network, and Brazzers was launched as a pay-per-view site.
404 Media notes that some attribute the prevalence of "giant boobs" in pornography to the business strategy of Youssef and his associates, who reportedly focused on this niche for its low cost and high traffic. Former Mindgeek CEO Feras Antoon reportedly told New York Magazine that they concentrated on breasts "because the big-tits niche was so cheap," and subsequently expanded into the "MILF niche," becoming dominant in that area.
Sam and Hassan Youssef also co-founded Mansef, an early "thumbnail gallery post" website for pornography. 404 Media details the subsequent complex history of acquisitions and sales within the pornography industry, noting that Mansef was sold to Fabian Thylmann and became Manwin. Thylmann continued acquiring numerous sites before facing tax evasion charges and ultimately selling his holdings to Antoon and David Tassilo, who rebranded the company as Mindgeek and continued the acquisition spree, including the flagship site Pornhub. Antoon and Tassilo resigned in 2022 amid accusations of abuse on their platforms, and private equity firm Ethical Capital Partners acquired the company in 2023, renaming it Aylo.

Following their ventures in the broader pornography industry, Sam and Hassan Youssef co-founded Valnet. Hassan currently serves as the company's CEO, while Sam is a board member and also the founder and CEO of Valsoft, an enterprise software company.

Housefull 5 Director Tarun On Laal Pari Plagiarism Claim: ‘No Intention To Steal'
Last Updated: Director Tarun Mansukhani says had he known Sandip Brahamin is the creator of the hat step in Housefull 5's Laal Pari, he would've brought him in to choreograph the song. Akshay Kumar, Abhishek Bachchan and Riteish Deshmukh starrer Housefull 5 maybe causing ripples at the box office but it's courting a controversy on grounds of plagiarism. A digital content creator and dancer named Sandip Brahamin has accused the makers of copying his 'signature hat move' in the song video of Laal Pari. In a reel, Sandip stated, 'I went to Instagram and YouTube and there is a movie called Housefull 5. It has a song called Laal Pari. They have copied my moves but they haven't mentioned my name, they haven't credited me (sic)." Reacting to his statements, Housefull 5 director Tarun Mansukhani exclusively tells News18 Showsha, 'I did read up something about that. To be honest, I hadn't seen his videos before. I had only gotten to know it after we had launched the song. I came to know that the step that we've in the song is the hook step that he's known for. I'm sure somebody must have seen it at some point somewhere and felt that it's a great step to do and we did it." For the unversed, Remo D'Souza has choreographed Laal Pari. Tarun says that had he known about Sandip, he would've brought him in to choreograph Akshay, Abhishek, Riteish, Nargis Fakhri, Jacqueline Fernandez and Sonam Bajwa. 'There was no intention to harm anyone or steal anything. Life isn't that conniving. If I had known this guy before, I would've brought him in to choreograph the song for my actors. Who would be a better choreographer of Laal Pari than the creator himself? It's as simple as that," he remarks. 'There was no intention to engage in any kind of plagiarism. It's just one of those things that ended up happening. We've very sorry if he feels like that. I want to reiterate that there was no intention of causing any harm of any form," he further adds. While Sandip had posted his reel on May 3, his video went viral on social media after Housefull 5 released in theatres on June 5. Meanwhile, Housefull 5 has entered the Rs 100 crore club, and its golden run continues. Talking about it, an excited Tarun tells us, 'It feels fantastic because I came back to the theatres after 17 years. My last theatrical film was in 2008 [Dostana]. Right now, we're at a Rs 178 crore gross worldwide." He admits that this feat feels even more 'special' especially since it comes at a time when the box office is going through a dry spell. 'I've sat and worked on this film for the last two years and now it has been accepted. More than being happy, we're grateful. We're thankful to someone who's watching from above. There's a certain amount of relief that it's done, it's out there and it's being appreciated. We're thrilled with the positive comments that people who've enjoyed the film have written for us, for the messages, for the calls and for the numbers the film is making," Tarun shares. Song releases, controversial documentary mark Moose Wala's 32nd birth anniversary
Bathinda : The 32nd birth anniversary of slain Punjabi singer Shubhdeep Singh Sidhu, popularly known as Sidhu Moose Wala , was marked on Wednesday with both tributes and controversy. While three new songs featuring the singer were released, a documentary claiming to reveal fresh details about his murder was unveiled on YouTube. This despite Moose Wala's father Balkaur Singh issuing a legal notice to its producers and approaching a Mansa court seeking a stay on the film's release, citing potential influence on ongoing legal proceedings. The court had posted the case for Thursday. Originally scheduled for a public screening in Mumbai, "The Killing Call" — uploaded to the online video sharing platform — includes interviews with journalists, cops and gangster Goldy Brar, who has claimed responsibility for Moose Wala's killing. In the documentary, Brar alleges Moose Wala was warned multiple times and made "unforgivable mistakes". He claims the situation became a matter of "either him or us". Brar details the origins of the conflict, stating Moose Wala angered jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi's gang by promoting a kabaddi tournament linked to their rivals, the Bambiha gang. Although a temporary peace was brokered by Bishnoi associate Vicky Middukhera, tensions heightened after Middukhera was killed in 2021. The Bambiha gang claimed responsibility. Moose Wala's manager, Shaganpreet Singh, was accused of aiding the shooters. Shaganpreet later fled India and is believed to be in Australia. Police, however, found no direct link between Moose Wala and the killing. The documentary, released in two episodes, traces Moose Wala's rise from rural Punjab to international stardom, examining his clashes with gang culture and the politics surrounding his image. The second part explores the events leading to his death. Moose Wala was shot dead on May 29, 2022, by gunmen who ambushed his car. Though Brar publicly claimed responsibility, no one has been convicted three years later. Brar remains a fugitive. Moose Wala's father reiterated that his legal action aims to prevent interference with the judicial process, maintaining hope for justice in his son's murder case. ‘We had no option but to kill him', says Goldy Brar on Sidhu Moosewala murder
Canada-based gangster Goldy Brar justified the killing of Sidhu Moosewala by claiming that the Punjabi singer 'had to face the consequences of his actions.' In a BBC documentary, it was revealed that Lawrence Bishnoi and Moosewala's relationship dated back a long time, and the dreaded gangster used to call the singer from jail, telling him he liked his music. 'In his arrogance, he (Moosewala) made some mistakes that could not be forgiven,' Brar told the BBC. 'We had no option but to kill him. He had to face the consequences of his actions. It was either him or us. As simple as that,' he added. The BBC World Service released the documentary titled 'The Killing Call' on the killing of Moosewala, on YouTube in two parts Wednesday, which coincided with his birth anniversary. The documentary was released at 5 am Wednesday. The BBC was scheduled to screen the documentary in a cinema hall in Mumbai Wednesday evening. However, after the controversy, the BBC released it on YouTube. Moosewala's father, Balkaur Singh, had petitioned a court in Mansa to stop its release or screening. The Mansa court has listed the petition for a hearing Thursday. Meanwhile, three of his songs were also released on his official channel Wednesday. Balkaur also wrote to Maharashtra director general of police (DGP) to stop the screening. In the complaint filed with the Maharashtra DGP and Juhu Police Station in Mumbai, Balkaur said that the documentary was made without his permission, and it 'contained false content about his son's murder'. He added that the documentary could be an attempt to tarnish his son's legacy. He said that the documentary includes interviews with individuals named in the FIR related to his son's murder, which he believes could affect the ongoing case. Later in the evening, Balkaur told media persons that that release of the documentary is like derailing the ongoing investigation into the murder case. He said that two witnesses have already testified in the court and he would be the third witness to testify in the coming days.
