What our style expert is wearing to Ascot with race-day looks from £79

Daily Mirror18-05-2025

Heading to the races and need a look that ticks the Royal Ascot dress code? From standout fascinators to classic dresses, we've rounded up the best high-street buys
Occasionwear season is officially here, and with key events like race days on the horizon, it's the perfect time to start planning those standout looks, accessories included.
Different events often come with their own style expectations (especially those with stricter dress codes, like Royal Ascot), so we've pulled together a selection of looks to suit a variety of events, tastes and budgets.
Whether you're leaning towards a bold statement or keeping things classic, the right finishing touches make all the difference. Think eye-catching fascinators, coordinating heels and chic bags to tie it all together.
From elegant floral midis to playful pink accessories, here's everything you need to put together a head-turning race day outfit.
PHASE EIGHT
Phase Eight is officially the fashion partner for Goodwood racecourse this year, and the race day fashion to come out of the partnership is 10/10. From bold coral tones to statement hats and chic accessories, you'll be standing out (in the best possible way!) wiht this stylish collection.
LIPSY
Strapless dresses, including Bardot and one-shoulders, are in fact not allowed at The Royal Enclosure at Ascot. However, other racecourses have a slightly more lenient dress code and permit them. And you can easily get around this by pairing a chic scarf or shawl around your shoulders.
We love the texture and dusty pink shade of this Lipsy dress, and it would look amazing at a garden party or a summer wedding.
HOBBS
Ascot is the perfect opportunity to play around with some bold colours, especially if that's not usually your style. Everyone there will be dressed to the nines so you won't feel out of place. And we love the subtly contrasting yellow floral detail on this Hobbs blue midi. Top it off with the vibrant blue hat, and you've got a winning look.
KAREN MILLEN
Of course, the races are about horseracing, but they are also the perfect place to make a fashion statement, especially Ladies Day at Ascot, and Karen Millen's Barbie pink fascinator does just that. Keep the look monochrome by teaming it with a matching pink dress, or go for a colour clash combination with a vibrant orange or green dress instead.
FOREVER NEW
Hats are not for everyone, and wearing one is not a requirement. That's why we love this Forever New midi dress; it does all the talking without much need for anything else. Keep it simple and team it with a pair of strappy heels and a neutral-coloured grab bag.

Five linen and silk high street pieces our experts are shopping this summer

Dressing in warm weather can be difficult, so we've rounded up the very best summer-friendly fabrics to wear this season from brands like Next, Hobbs and Forever New Whether you're going on holiday or enjoying the sunshine at home, the season for lightweight fabrics is here. To complement your summer wardrobe, our experts found the best and most flattering pieces that perfectly blend comfort with style. Both linen and silk are ideal summer fabrics thanks to their breathability and moisture-wicking properties, so these pieces will keep you cool and breezy all season long. From simple silhouettes to on-trend styles, these buys are some of this season's warm-weather essentials. We've rounded up our top picks from brands including Hobbs, Ro&Zo, and Me & Em, starting from £49. NEXT Florals are always in for the spring/summer, and this slouchy, silky suit from Next is the perfect alternative to a floral dress. If you're heading to a wedding or the races and not really into floaty skirts or dresses, this suit ticks all the right boxes. It's comfy and airy, and it looks so stylish teamed with strappy low heels and oversized statement earrings. RO & ZO If you're looking for something with an easy, breezy linen feel, this warm- weather essential Ro&Zo set is perfect. This tailored yet relaxed look is perfect for throwing on for a sunset dinner or an afternoon stroll. This set's versatility allows you to mix and match your summer wardrobe or pair the top and bottom together for an effortless look. HOBBS Brown has been making a recent comeback, so we think this Hobbs dress in Chestnut Brown would be the perfect addition to your summer closet. In addition to its trendy shade, its 100% pure linen composition paired with pockets and a flattering silhouette ensures that you'll feel both comfortable and stylish. Style it with some strappy leather sandals for an easy holiday look. FOREVER NEW A waistcoat co-ord is a summer wardrobe essential in our opinion. They are so versatile, whether you style them with chunky loafers and a blazer for the office, or kitten heel mules and gold jewellery for an evening out with the girls. And the linen material on this chic beige one from Forever New means you'll stay cool and airy all summer long. SHOP THE LOOK: This pure silk top in the shade 'summer chocolate' will have you feeling both cool and sleek this summer. The open back adds a chic edge to its simple silhouette, allowing you to dress it up or down. Pair it with the brand's slouchy long-length jeans that shoppers say are 'a staple in every summer wardrobe', and an on-trend eyelet belt for a statement look.

Billie Piper appears to be new Doctor as Ncuti Gatwa leaves Doctor Who

Piper, 42, first appeared in the series as the companion to the ninth Doctor in 2005, playing Rose Tyler alongside Christopher Eccleston's Time Lord – and then again for the 10th Doctor played by David Tennant. Piper appears to replaces Gatwa, who leaves Doctor Who after two seasons in the science-fiction series. She said: 'It's no secret how much I love this show, and I have always said I would love to return to the Whoniverse as I have some of my best memories there, so to be given the opportunity to step back on that Tardis one more time was just something I couldn't refuse, but who, how, why and when, you'll just have to wait and see.' Shortly after the finale aired, the actress shared a post on Instagram holding a rose with the caption that read: 'A rose is a rose is a rose !!!' Born in Rwanda before moving to Scotland, Gatwa's time on the long-running science fiction programme came to an end as The Reality War episode brought this season to a close on Saturday. The two-part season finale saw the Doctor face the Rani in a battle to save the world after making the decision to save the life of one little girl. A post shared by Billie Piper (@billiepiper) Speaking about his decision to leave the series, Gatwa said: 'You know when you get cast, at some point you are going to have to hand back that sonic screwdriver and it is all going to come to an end, but nothing quite prepares you for it. 'This journey has been one that I will never forget, and a role that will be part of me forever. There are no words to describe what it feels like to be cast as the Doctor, nor are there words to explain what it feels like to be accepted into this iconic role that has existed for over 60 years and is truly loved by so many across the globe. 'I've loved every minute of it, but now is the time to hand over the keys to that beloved blue box and let someone else take control and enjoy it every bit as much as I have. I'll truly miss it, and forever be grateful to it, and everyone that has played a part in my journey as the Doctor.' The finale also saw Whittaker, the 13th doctor, make a guest appearance as Gatwa's Doctor appeared to be travelling through alternate universes. Sex Education and Barbie star Gatwa has played the 15th Doctor since Scottish actor David Tennant bi-generated in 2023, after his version of the character was brought back to life as the 14th Doctor. Whittaker, the first woman to play the Time Lord, announced in July 2021 that she would depart after three series as the 13th Doctor. Russell T Davies, Doctor Who Showrunner, said: 'What a Doctor! Thank you, Ncuti! As his final words say, this has been an absolute joy, and the team in Cardiff and everyone who has worked on this show for the past few years, are so lucky to have been part of Ncuti's great adventure as he shoots off to stratospheric new heights. 'Billie once changed the whole of television, back in 2005, and now she's done it again! It's an honour and a hoot to welcome her back to the Tardis, but quite how and why and who is a story yet to be told. After 62 years, the Doctor's adventures are only just beginning!'
