Pitching, defense help Blue Jays overcome Mariners
April 19 - Right-hander Bowden Francis pitched six solid innings, right fielder Addison Barger had three assists and the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the visiting Seattle Mariners 3-1 on Friday night.
Former Blue Jay Rowdy Tellez hit a solo home run for the Mariners in the opener of a three-game series.
Toronto has won three in a row and Seattle lost for just the second time in eight games.
Toronto scored a first-inning run against right-hander Bryan Woo (2-1). Bo Bichette singled, stole second, took third on Vladimir Guerrero Jr.'s groundout to first and scored when Anthony Santander lined a sacrifice fly to left.
Tellez tied the game with two out in the second when he drove a first-pitch fastball from Francis (2-2) over the right-field wall.
The Blue Jays regained their lead in their second. George Springer singled, Alejandro Kirk walked and Will Wagner singled to load the bases. Alan Roden hit a sacrifice fly to left.
Cal Raleigh, who entered the game with nine career homers against Toronto, lined a single off the wall in right in the fourth but was thrown out at second by Barger. Randy Arozena was hit by a pitch but was caught in a rundown between third and home on Luke Raley's double to right.
Toronto padded the lead in the home fourth. Springer led off with a double and scored on Kirk's one-out single.
The Mariners continued to run themselves into outs in the fifth. Tellez walked and Miles Mastrobuoni singled. The slow-footed Tellez was out at third after tagging up on Ben Williamson's flyout to right. It was Barger's third outfield assist of the game.
Francis allowed one run, five hits and one walk with five strikeouts in six innings before Mason Fluharty replaced him in the seventh and survived a leadoff walk and a stolen base with help from Chad Green, who retired the final batter.
Woo retired his final nine batters, allowing three runs, seven hits and two walks with four strikeouts in seven innings.
Toronto reliever Yimi Garcia survived a hit batter in the eighth.
Jeff Hoffman pitched a clean ninth with two strikeouts to earn his fifth save.

CFL on TSN producer Chris Edwards told the outlet, 'Our CFL on TSN family is absolutely devastated over Chase's passing. 'If you know Milt, you know that his family is everything to him, and we cannot imagine the pain he is going through right now. 'Milt is our brother and we are going to give him our love and support him in any way we can, and in whatever way he wants.' An Ohio native, Milt went to Miami University in his home state before signing undrafted with the Bengals and playing there for three seasons. After being cut, he played three straight seasons in Winnipeg, made a brief attempt to join the NFL again, and then returned to the Blue Bombers from 1999 until 2008.

Back-to-back jacks help Twins take down Blue Jays
June 8 - Brooks Lee and Christian Vazquez hit consecutive home runs and the Minnesota Twins held on for a 6-3 win over the Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday afternoon in Minneapolis. Ty France went 2-for-4 with an RBI double for Minnesota, which salvaged a win in the three-game series. Byron Buxton and Trevor Larnach added one RBI apiece. George Springer and Alan Roden each doubled and drove in a run for Toronto, whose four-game winning streak ended. Alejandro Kirk also drove in a run. Twins right-hander Joe Ryan (7-2) allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits in five innings. He walked three and struck out six, and he threw 61 of his 92 pitches for strikes. Blue Jays right-hander Bowden Francis (2-8) gave up four runs on five hits, including a pair of home runs, in 3 1/3 innings. He walked five and struck out two. Twins closer Jhoan Duran pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his 10th save. The Blue Jays opened the scoring in the top of the second.
