GA nonprofit attempts to set world record for longest basketball game

Yahoo19-03-2025

A group of metro Atlanta men are playing basketball around the clock in an effort to break the Guinness World Record for longest basketball game as well as highlight the fight against human trafficking and show support for the survivors.
Men Opposing Sex Trafficking (MOST) is a nonprofit that offers men the opportunity to fight against human trafficking.
In September 2024, members of MOST played softball for 121 hours, breaking the Guinness World Record for longest marathon softball game.
Their attempt at setting the record for the longest basketball game began on Sunday at 9 a.m. at Landmark Christian School in Fairburn.
To qualify for the record, players are required to stay in the gym the entire time and must eat and sleep on the court.
Their only time away from the court is five-minute bathroom breaks every two hours.
There are no quarter breaks or timeouts - only a clock counting up to 121 hours.
The current record of 120 hours was set in Buffalo, New York in August 2021.

According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the game can be played with a maximum of 12 players on each team, with a minimum of five on the court at all times.
The teams are split into groups of six and play in two-hour shifts during the day, and alternate to five-hour shifts overnight to allow for sleeping.
Any player who gets six fouls in a two-hour window will be disqualified and cannot be replaced.
The game is scheduled to end at 10 a.m. on Friday, March 21.
You can watch a live stream of the effort on the MOST website.

Gwinnett man charged with posing as mortgage broker in $152,000 scheme

A 55-year-old Gwinnett County man was arrested Monday night for allegedly posing as a mortgage broker to swindle at least five victims across multiple states out of more than $152,000. [DOWNLOAD: Free WSB-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] Angelo Robert Moe was booked into Gwinnett County Jail on felony theft charges after police say he convinced victims to wire money for real estate transactions that never panned out. Court documents allege Moe collected fees from victims between 2022 and 2024, promising to secure loans for properties through Hienz Incorporated. Police say he used an inactive mortgage license number and often directed victims to wire money to his personal Navy Federal account instead of company accounts. The alleged scheme unraveled when victims discovered their real estate deals had fallen through and they allege Moe refused to return their money. One victim, Latoya Skinners, said she lost $8,000 after Moe promised to secure a loan for a house. She shared one wire transfer that shows a $7,000 transfer into his personal account in September 2023. 'He said, you're not getting any money back,' Skinners told Channel 2 Gwinnett County Bureau Chief Matt Johnson. 'He did that to almost everybody, strong-arming them, telling them he's not giving money back because those were his fees.' A fifth victim said she lost $25,000 in a separate Snellville Police case. Gwinnett County Police Cpl. Juan Madiedo says Moe used an inactive Nationwide Mortgage Licensing System (NMLS) number. He warned potential victims to verify license numbers and avoid large upfront payments. 'Be worried when someone's asking for large sums of money up front and are avoiding using company emails,' Madiedo said. Police believe additional victims may exist and encourage anyone who conducted business with Moe to file a police report if they've been victimized. [SIGN UP: WSB-TV Daily Headlines Newsletter]

Officials remind drivers to ‘move over' after patrol vehicles hit in northeast GA

Authorities said when you see emergency lights on the road, remember two things: slow down and move over. [DOWNLOAD: Free WSB-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] The reminder comes after a Habersham County deputy patrol car was hit by another vehicle Saturday night. The sheriff's office said the deputy's Dodge Charger was providing lights for a road construction project on Georgia 365 southbound near James Short Tractor in Alto. The Georgia State Patrol is investigating both crashes. [SIGN UP: WSB-TV Daily Headlines Newsletter] 'These collisions serve as an urgent reminder of the importance of slowing down whenever you see emergency lights or utility vehicles working on or near a roadway,' said Habersham County Sheriff Robin Krockum. 'This is not the first time one of our vehicles has been struck trying to keep work crews safe in that area of Ga. 365, but thankfully our personnel and others involved have not been injured in the collisions.' Georgia's Move Over Law requires drivers to move over one lane when possible if an emergency vehicle with flashing lights is parked on the shoulder of the highway. If traffic is too heavy, authorities ask drivers to slow down and be prepared to stop.
