Democrats are slowly getting there; here's an election victory that could be a big morale booster ahead of the midterm polls
Donald Trump
's ruling party at White House, Republicans, has received a surprise election jolt which will certainly cheer Democrats ahead of next year's midterm polls. Omaha, Nebraska had a mayoral election on Tuesday night. Democratic Party candidate John Ewing Jr. won the election defeating Republican Jean Stothert, the incumbent mayor.
Stothert was trying for her fourth term; she has been mayor for 12 years. This is a big upset for the Republicans, as she was expected to win the polls. John Ewing Jr. will become Omaha's first Black mayor.
John Ewing Jr. is a Democrat, and the Douglas County Treasurer. He was also a former deputy chief of police in Omaha. He has worked as a public servant for 43 years.

In his speech, Ewing said, 'Tonight, we start a new chapter. We will build an Omaha that gives everyone a chance at a good life'.
According to the
Democratic National Committee
this win is good news for the Democratic Party. It shows that Democrats are doing well before the big elections in November 2026. Omaha has not had a Democratic mayor since 2013. Nebraska is usually Republican, but Omaha is a mixed area, sometimes called the "blue dot".
Live Events
In 2016 Trump got more votes. However, the Democrats got more votes than Trump in 2020 and 2024. Now, let's look at the voting numbers, this year about 87,000 people voted. Ewing won by about 10,900 votes.
In her speech after losing, Stothert said, 'I am proud of 12 years of success. I am thankful for your support. I hope the good work we started will continue.'
Jim Pillen, Republican Governor of Nebraska said 'Elections matter. Leadership matters. Conservative leadership matters.'
Ken Martin, Democratic National Committee Chair, praised Ewing's win. Said Democrats are doing better than Republicans all across the country and warned Republican Don Bacon Omaha's current U.S. House Representative that his seat is now at risk.
Jane Kleeb, Nebraska Democratic Party Chair called the win historic. He said Ewing's 43 years of service show his strong commitment. Promised that Democrats will keep working hard for the people.
Omaha might be really important in the 2026 midterm elections. Don Bacon, a Republican leader who speaks for Omaha and nearby areas in Nebraska's 2nd district, will run for election again. This result may affect his chances, as more people in Omaha are voting Democrat.

‘Can't Call In National Guard...': Trump's 2020 Video Goes Viral Amid Los Angeles Riots
Last Updated: Trump deployed National Guard troops in Los Angeles to quell pro-immigration protests. This was criticised by California Governor Gavin Newsom, who vowed to sue President for it. Amid tensions mounting between Donald Trump and California Democrats over his decision to deploy National Guard troops to Los Angeles to stop pro-immigration protests, the US President's 2020 video has gone viral, in which he said he 'can't call in the National Guard unless requested by a governor." In a televised interview with ABC nearly five years ago, Trump had cited 'going by the laws", according to which the Governor has to request for the National Guard to control an escalating situation in the state. 'I have restored law and order. Except in Democrat-run cities. We have to go by the laws. We can't move in the National Guard. I can call insurrection, but there's no reason to ever do that, even in a Portland case. We can't call in the National Guard unless we're requested by the governor," he said in the old video that has now resurfaced after his National Guard decision in 2025. 'We can't call in the National Guard unless we're requested by a governor." – Donald Trump, 2020Oops — Spencer Hakimian (@SpencerHakimian) June 10, 2025 Los Angeles Riots Notably on Monday, in a dramatic escalation of tensions, California Governor Gavin Newsom vowed to sue Trump for the deployment of National Guard troops in Los Angeles, accusing his administration of violating federal laws by cracking down on pro-immigration protesters. Newsom said that the Trump government's decision to arrest the protesters from the city through the deployment of National Guard without consultation with the Governor is 'illegal and immoral". Notably, the National Guard is controlled jointly by the federal and state governments in the US. Trump reacted sharply to Newsom's criticism and dubbed him 'incompetent" and described his call to move in the National Guard as 'a great decision". 'We made a great decision in sending the National Guard to deal with the violent, instigated riots in California. If we had not done so, Los Angeles would have been completely obliterated. The very incompetent 'Governor," Gavin Newscum, and 'Mayor," Karen Bass, should be saying, 'THANK YOU, PRESIDENT TRUMP, YOU ARE SO WONDERFUL. WE WOULD BE NOTHING WITHOUT YOU, SIR." Instead, they choose to lie to the People of California and America by saying that we weren't needed, and that these are 'peaceful protests'," Trump posted on Truth Social. 'Clean Trump's mess': LA protest continues, US President orders 700 Marines, 2,000 more National Guard members
Pentagon is expected to deploy about 700 active-duty Marines to Los Angeles from southern California in the wake of protests against immigration authorities, three US officials said Monday. Meanwhile, California officials sued US President Donald Trump, seeking to roll back the administration's National Guard deployment. Advertisement According to reports, Trump has ordered the Department of Defense to deploy an additional 2,000 California National Guard members to the Los Angeles area to support US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) amid ongoing protests in the city. The extraordinary mobilisation of 700 full-time professional military personnel – who join hundreds of National Guard troops already there – looked likely to stoke tensions in a city with a huge Latino population. Here's all you need to know about Trump's deployment of National Guard troops to LA immigration protests: US officials said about 1,000 National Guard members were in the city under federal orders by midday Monday to respond to immigration protests. The full 2,000 members initially authorised by Trump were expected to be on the ground by the end of the day. Later Monday, Trump authorised the deployment of an additional 2,000 National Guard members, the Associated Press reported. The latest order brings the total number of Guard put on federal orders for the protests to more than 4,100. California officials sued President Donald Trump on Monday, seeking to roll back the administration's National Guard deployment. California Attorney General Rob Bonta called the National Guard deployment 'unlawful' and said it 'trampled' on the state's sovereignty. Bonta sued the Trump administration Monday in response. According to CNN, the lawsuit, filed in federal court in San Francisco, named President Donald Trump, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and the United States Department of Defense as defendants and said Trump did not have the authority to deploy the California National Guard. Governor Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, told MSNBC that he also plans to file suit Monday against the Trump administration. Gavin Newsom called the presence of troops on the streets of Los Angeles both 'illegal and immoral." Meanwhile, the Pentagon is also expected to deploy about 700 Marines to Los Angeles from southern California, three US officials said Monday. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the details of military operations. The Marines are highly trained in combat and crisis response, with time in conflict zones like Syria and Afghanistan. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth got advice about Marine deployment from Joint Chiefs chairman. Hegseth tweeted late Saturday that he was considering deploying the Marines to respond to the unrest after getting advice earlier in the day from Gen. Dan Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs, a US official said. LAPD chief says Marines' arrival could cause problems if it's not coordinated with police. Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell said the department has not been given any 'formal notification' that the Marines will be coming to the city. Pentagon is working on rules to guide Marines heading to LA. The memo is expected to lay out the steps the 700 Marines can take to protect federal personnel and property during protests over immigration raids. 'Those guidelines also will include specifics on the possibility that they could temporarily detain civilians until they could be turned over to law enforcement if troops are under assault or to prevent harm,' a US official said. California Governor Gavin Newsom said he had met "with local and state officials to clean Trump's mess." Newsom wrote on X, 'Meeting with local and state officials to discuss strategies to maintain peace in Los Angeles. State and local leaders are standing together to clean Trump's mess and pick up the pieces to ensure the safety of our communities.' Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass says the city is being 'used for an experiment' by the federal government as they bring in National Guard and Marines to counter immigration protests. Videos surfaced on social media on Tuesday, claiming to show that "dozens of LA Sheriffs just rolled up with armored trucks and full tactical gear preparing for more riots." Advertisement
