Style Edit: Aesop unveils its Aurner perfume with a limited edition ear cuff

Blending tenderness and strength, Aesop's new Aurner Eau de Parfum is inviting a fresh perspective on floral scents. The fragrance has been developed in collaboration with perfumer Céline Barel, and showcases the innovative use of magnolia leaf rather than the expected petal. The result is a complex, bright scent with a tea-like quality.
Vibrant citrus top notes are enriched by spicy, warm cardamom and pink pepper, complemented by herbaceous undertones of Roman camomile. The initial brightness and luminosity of magnolia leaf transitions into a geranium-forward floral heart, with base notes of rich sandalwood, cypriol heart and cedar heart, producing a textured aroma.
Derived from an Old Norse verb meaning 'adorned or embellished with flowers', the fragrance's name encapsulates its essence. The invigorating blend communicates an assertion of individuality bound to resonate with those meant to wear it. Bangkok-based fine jewellery designer Patcharavipa Bodiratnangkura. Photo: Handout For the launch of Aurner, Aesop has partnered with Bangkok-based fine jewellery designer Patcharavipa Bodiratnangkura. Known for fusing traditional Thai craftsmanship with the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi, the designer's creations reflect an appreciation of imperfection and transient beauty.
Inspired by Aurner's emotive qualities, Bodiratnangkura has produced an exquisite, one-of-a-kind necklace for the fragrance's campaign, as well as a limited edition ear cuff. 'I see jewellery as a sensory experience, but it is always missing taste and smell,' she notes, adding that Aurner is the type of fragrance she would naturally gravitate towards. 'I like the dark, mysterious woody aroma, yet at the same time, refreshing bloom.'
Robust yet delicate, the design of Bodiratnangkura's necklace echoes Aurner's blend of metallic and floral notes. In a similar vein, the sculptural ear cuff – inspired by the magnolia – symbolises strength and purity. 'We added rhodium plating over the silver to showcase an intense shine, but also to give the piece the attitude of being delicate and strong at the same time,' the designer explains. The cuff is limited to 200 pieces, available at select Aesop stores, including in Hong Kong. Bodiratnangkura at work on the design of the ear cuff. Photo: Handout
Aesop's intention with the ear cuff is to showcase one of Aurner's key ingredients, the magnolia, in a bespoke keepsake. Bodiratnangkura notes that the magnolia leaf ingredient on which the piece is based symbolises Aesop's defiant, unorthodox approach to fragrance creation.
Meanwhile, the magnolia has always been a symbol of power and purity for Bodiratnangkura. 'When one thinks about designs derived from florals, one might think of something feminine or overtly sweet. [But] I see them as something very sculptural, very strong, and naturally perfect,' she says. 'When Aesop approached me and introduced Aurner Eau de Parfum as a defiant bloom, this felt very aligned with my own interpretation of flowers.'

Thai elephant raids convenience store, eats snacks and leaves without paying

A convenience store in northeastern Thailand has had to contend with an unusual shoplifter – a large male elephant who scoffed down boxes of rice crackers before casually walking out. Advertisement The daylight robbery has gone viral in Thailand after the 'Here is Khao Yai' Facebook page posted a video on Monday afternoon showing the giant creature – known locally as Plai Biang Lek – ambling into the shop, head brushing the ceiling, guzzling snacks, and then strolling out. The local store, in Pak Chong district, about three hours northeast of Bangkok, is not far from Khao Yai National Park, where wild elephants are frequently seen leaving protected areas to forage for food. Thais chuckled at the unexpected human-elephant interaction in a region where such encounters, while not uncommon, rarely play out in convenience stores. 'Would you like some pork buns?' one Facebook user quipped, while others teased the elephant for its apparent criminality.

Smokey Robinson under criminal investigation

Smokey Robinson under criminal investigation US singer Smokey Robinson pictured at the 50th Annual American Music Awards in Los Angeles in 2022. File photo: AFP Motown legend Smokey Robinson is under criminal investigation, law enforcement in Los Angeles said on Thursday, just days after he was sued by four former housekeepers who allege the soul singer repeatedly raped and sexually assaulted them. "The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Special Victims Bureau is actively investigating criminal allegations involving William Robinson AKA 'Smokey Robinson,'" said a statement sent to AFP. The development comes after a multimillion dollar lawsuit was filed in a Los Angeles court claiming the 85-year-old forced himself on female employees multiple times over a number of years, often when his wife was not at home. The sheriff's department would not confirm the substance of their investigation, but lawyers for the women in the suit told AFP their clients were cooperating with the probe. One plaintiff alleges the "Tracks of My Tears" singer would summon her to his bedroom in his Los Angeles area home, and greet her wearing only his underwear. He would then sexually assault her, despite her protestations, with the suit claiming there were seven such attacks between March 2023 and when she felt compelled to resign in February 2024. Another former housekeeper alleges Robinson assaulted her more than 20 times over a four-year period, while a third says in the suit that she was "sexually harassed, sexually assaulted and raped" throughout her 12-year employment until 2024. The fourth woman says the singer began assaulting her in 2007 when she travelled with him to his Las Vegas home. None of the women are named in the case, which is common in cases involving claims of sexual assault. The lawsuit, which is seeking at least US$50 million in damages, says none of the women reported the assaults at the time because they were intimidated by Robinson's celebrity, and feared attacks on their character. Robinson was one of the founding members of The Miracles, a Detroit-based outfit that came together in the 1950s. The group had dozens of chart hits, including the smash "The Tears of a Clown" in 1967. (AFP)
