Glenmavis beauty secures Miss Great Britain Glasgow finals place for second year in a row
A Glenmavis beauty has secured a place in the Miss Great Britain Glasgow finals for a second year in a row - and will once again use her model behaviour to support a charity aiming to cure the rare genetic condition her young nephew suffers from. Efia Quartey, 18, is "so excited" to make a return to the catwalk and continue backing her brave nephew Hudson, four, of Gartcosh, and his battle with Angelman Syndrome, which affects only one in every 15,000-17,000 people. In her efforts towards being crowned queen at the Glasgow finals in June, Efia is again fundraising for FAST UK (Foundation for Angelman Syndrome Therapeutics). Angelman Syndrome is a genetic disorder that affects the nervous system and causes severe physical and intellectual disability. Efia has revealed that Hudson is "doing well" and continues to be wowed by "the wee superhero". She told Lanarkshire Live : "Hudson is defeating all of the odds and we are all so proud of how he is battling Angelman Syndrome. "We were told he would never walk or talk but he has started talking - often saying 'Mama' - and taking a lot of steps unassisted. "He is a wee ray of sunshine and I hope I can raise as much as possible for FAST UK again this year. "There have been some successful clinical trials into Angelman Syndrome but it's still a really new condition that even a lot of doctors and nurses are still learning about, so the more support the charity receives the better." As previously reported by Lanarkshire Live , Efia, who turns 19 just before the Miss Great Britain Glasgow finals on June 20, has a background in modelling, and passion for the industry from a young age . Her spot in last year's Glasgow finals came about after a chance encounter with the regional director at the Fort shopping outlet who came up to Efia's mum and said, "your daughter is stunning", and that she would put her straight through to the finals. Responding to a second consecutive finals appearance, a delighted Efia said: "I am so excited to be back competing for Miss Great Britain Glasgow. "Last year's experience will help me this time around and it's even more thrilling to be there again. "I loved every minute of it. I did a few appearances after the event last year and I was certain it was something I wanted to repeat. "The finals are a month earlier this year so I have less time to prepare but I want this so badly and will give my all to be successful." Hard-working Efia has her own business, Fifi Beauty salon in her home village, and has also donated funds and clothing to Airdrie Community School Uniform Bank. She added: 'I have ran my own business for three years and it is going tremendously well. We are a small team with our own skill-set and everyone is really delighted for my second inclusion in Miss Great Britain. 'My mum is my biggest supporter and she is so proud of me. I couldn't have done it all without her.' To donate to Efia's fundraising campaign, search for her name on the JustGiving website . *Don't miss the latest headlines from around Lanarkshire. Lollipop: A 'timely' film about the realities of the social care system
A decade ago Daisy-May Hudson picked up her camera and started documenting her family's life. She, her mother and her 13-year-old sister had just lost their home. Priced out of the rental market, they were living in hostels and halfway houses while they fought layers of bureaucracy to try and get rehoused. The resulting documentary, Half Way, announced the arrival of a major new filmmaking talent as well as showing the frustrations, tears and helplessness of people in her family's position. Awarded the BAFTA Breakthrough accolade, she has now made her first feature film Lollipop, which deals with a mother fighting to regain custody of her children after they are taken into care while she is in prison. The feelings of powerlessness she encountered amongst single mothers during screenings of Half Way, helped inform Hudson's decision to make a feature film, using people who had real life experience of the issues. From women she met during the making of Holloway, her documentary about former inmates of Holloway women's prison, to a script supervisor who herself lost her son into the care system just days after he was born, Lollipop is an emotional and powerful study of the realities of mothers separated from their children, while offering no judgement of the parties involved. For Hudson and script supervisor Emilia Rose Porter, Lollipop presents the system as it is, and asks if this is what the viewer thinks it should be be. Porter uses her experience to help those working in the social care industries, sharing the story of how a difficult private life and mental health issues meant she had to fight to get her son back and turn her life around. She succeeded, and is grateful to Hudson for giving people like her visibility, she says. With increasing awareness of the negative impact on children caused by maternal imprisonment, Lollipop is timely. Now the film is about to get a lot more visibility. Next week it is being released in UK cinemas.

Inaugural Strathaven Beer Festival draws in over 1000 revellers
Not even a downpour mid-way through could dampen the spirits of most beer enthusiasts, as the festival site stayed busy until the end. The inaugura l Strathaven Beer Festival took place at the weekend - with over 1000 revellers enjoying the event. And not even a downpour mid-way through could dampen the spirits of most beer enthusiasts, as the festival site stayed busy until the end. Organised by the team behind the award-winning Eaglesham Beer Fest, the gathering showcased some of Scotland's best craft brewers and drinks brands. It was supported by lip-smacking street food and fantastic live music, which kept Strathaven's hardy souls warm and entertained during the two bouts of rain. Organiser Fraser Wilson told Lanarkshire Live: 'We are so grateful to the people of Strathaven for welcoming us into the town for the event, which we think was a roaring success. 'We had sold over 1100 briefs for our first event and over 85 per cent of those ticket holders attended - that doesn't include those who bought on the day, or children. 'For the most, we rode our luck and the weather was fine - sunny in parts, even. But at around 3.20pm there was an hour of pretty miserable rain and most people ran for cover, with a few calling it a day.' But the bad weather couldn't stop the party, with live music from Zack Dale and Underdog keeping spirits up. And those spirits went through the roof when teen-singing sensation Connor Fyfe had the large marquee rocking. That was mirrored in the large Scout tent by John McLarnon, who made the most of his ad hoc staging to put on a fabulous singalong. Let's Get Eclectic brought the house down with a superb DJ set, which sent revellers into the Strathaven evening to enjoy hospitality elsewhere. Fraser added: 'We're really chuffed at how it went and are really keen to hear people's feedback. 'If it's something that people enjoyed, feel the town benefitted from and want to see return, then we'd be happy to look into Strathaven Beer Fest 2026. "We want to say a huge thank you to the Strathaven business community, Scouts, Avondale Radio, and Balloon Festival team for their support during our preparations.' *Don't miss the latest headlines from around Lanarkshire.
