The Greater Manchester park that's a piece of the countryside ‘in the middle of suburbia'

Yahoo23-04-2025

To the west of Prestwich is Drinkwater park, an area of woodland and meadows which feels like it could be in the middle of the countryside - despite lying inside the M60.
Flowing through the park is the River Irwell, while a reservoir can be found hidden among the trees.
The park is criss-crossed with walking trails and forms part of the Prestwich Forest Park, which also includes Philips Park, and Prestwich Clough, among other areas.

Managed by Forestry England, Drinkwater Park offers a completely different experience compared to Greater Manchester's Victorian-era municipal parks. Drinkwater Park is a bit wilder and you won't find flower beds or manicured lawns here.
Instead it's a place where tree branches form green tunnels over paths and deer can occasionally be seen through the trees.
An array of wildlife call the park home, from the frogs and toads that breed in its wetlands, to the waterfowl that congregate at the reservoir.
It's a popular spot for walkers, runners, dog walkers and cyclists with the National Cycle Network 6 passing through the area.
Surrounded by residential areas to both the east and west, the park provides an escape for those who live nearby.
It's received hundreds of five star reviews on Google, many commenting on how rural it feels. One visitor, Susan Abrams, wrote the following: 'A beautiful large piece of countryside (it stretches for miles, going from one park through to the next) filled with trees, wild flowers, a river and wildlife, nestled in the middle of suburbia.
'What more could you ask for? So pretty. Perfect for walking, cycling, picnicking, chilling etc. I found the map on my phone very useful.'
Another reviewer, Karen Hill, wrote: 'Given that this is on the outskirts of the city, surrounded by residential areas, it is usually surprisingly quiet and peaceful. Lots of lovely walks and it's popular with dog walkers, fields for sports, wooded areas, ponds, a river and stream.'
As well as being a green oasis, the park also has an interesting history. The land itself was bought by Peter Drinkwater, a prominent Manchester textile mill owner in the 1790s and he would stay at Irwell House, built on the banks of the river, during the summer months.
The land, including Irwell House, was left to his daughters after Peter's son died and it was then bought by Salford and Prestwich councils in 1902. Irwell House was then converted to a smallpox hospital due to its isolated position, but it was later abandoned and fell into disrepair.
In 1958 the house was damaged in a fire during a civil defence exercise and it was then demolished a few years later. Today you can still see the foundations of the building, the remains of a few walls and what's left of the overgrown gardens as nature reclaims the site.

Helicopter carrying Hindu pilgrims crashes in India's Himalayan state of Uttarakhand, killing 7

LUCKNOW, India (AP) — A helicopter carrying Hindu pilgrims crashed early Sunday in the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand, killing seven people on board, officials said. The chopper was flying to Guptkashi, a prominent Hindu pilgrimage site in the Himalayas, from Kedarnath temple town, when it crashed. The accident occurred within minutes after the helicopter took off, officials said, on what should have been a 10-minute flight. Nandan Singh Rajwar, a local disaster management official, said authorities have launched a rescue and search operation and are expected to review operational protocols for flights in the region. The chopper, operated by Aryan Aviation, a private helicopter service company, went down in a forested area several kilometers (miles) from the Kedarnath pilgrimage route at around 5:30 a.m. local time. Officials said the crash was believed to have been caused by poor weather conditions. Kedarnath is home to one of the four most sacred Hindu temple shrines and receives tens of thousands of pilgrims each year during the summer season, many of whom use helicopter services due to the difficult mountainous terrain. Officials said the dead included the pilot and pilgrims from the neighboring state of Uttar Pradesh and western states of Maharashtra and Gujarat. The bodies were badly burned in a fire that followed the crash, they said. Helicopter mishaps are not uncommon in the treacherous Kedarnath region, where sudden weather changes and high-altitude flying conditions can pose risks. On June 7, a helicopter operating in the Kedarnath Valley made an emergency landing on a highway due to technical fault shortly after taking off. The pilot was injured but all five passengers on board were unharmed. On May 8, a helicopter crashed in Uttarkashi district, killing six people, including the pilot. One person survived. Error! Carnival cruisers get scam alert; Celebrity Xcel homeport revealed

As summer travel season kicks into high gear, travel scams are picking up, too. If you're cruising this summer (or anytime, really) it's important to be aware that scammers continue to use convincing tactics to defraud cruisers and other travelers. Related: Carnival Cruise Line rep addresses a troubling tipping rumor While scammers often target travelers who are looking to book cruises, hotels, or flights with legitimate-looking fake booking websites that offer enticing deals, that isn't the only tactic they use. These tricksters also prey upon travelers who need to get in touch with their cruise line, hotel, or airline about their existing reservation. One Carnival Cruise Line passenger recently posted a warning about this kind of scam on Reddit. It's one that's very easy to fall for, and although it isn't a new travel scam, it's on the rise again as travelers take summer cruises and other trips. And it's not just Carnival cruisers who are being targeted with this sophisticated scheme. Royal Caribbean cruisers have reported falling for it, or nearly falling for it, too. Doug Parker shared more details on the trending travel scam, and other cruise news including the future home port for Celebrity Cruises' new ship Celebrity Xcel, on the June 13th edition of Cruise News Today. Good morning, here's your cruise news for Friday, June 13th. A Carnival guest is warning others after nearly falling for a phone scam while trying to fix an online check-in issue. Yes, she called what appeared to be a Carnival number found on a Google search, but it turned out to be fake. The scammer offered to rebook her cruise for $1,000 less under a bogus bulk room promotion. She hung up and confirmed with the real Carnival that it was just a scam. Carnival has now locked her account to prevent any tampering. Passengers are urged to double-check phone numbers and avoid deals that seem too good to be true. And to be clear, this trend is happening with many cruise lines, hotels, and airlines, not just Carnival. Related: Carnival Cruise Line passengers targeted by more travel scams And Cunard's Queen Elizabeth has officially arrived Seattle, marking its first-ever home port season in the Pacific Northwest. The 90,000-gross-registered-ton ship completed a 19-night transpacific crossing and started its Alaska sailings yesterday, June 12th. Need a U.S. passport? How to apply for one in Miami without an appointment

If you need a U.S. passport without an appointment, you better act fast. On Saturday, June 14, people can apply at a 'passport fair' in Miami-Dade County. Organized by the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Consular Affairs, the event will also offer assistance to those applying for a U.S. passport for the first time. According to the Department of State, only one post office in Miami will host the passport fair in June. Here are the details: Passport Fair in Miami The U.S. Passport Acceptance Fair has already been held in various cities and states across the country. Now, it's coming to Miami-Dade this Saturday, June 14, along with other Florida cities including Gulf Breeze and Milton. In South Florida, the one-day event will run from 1 to 7 p.m. at the Snapper Creek USPS post office, 11000 SW 104th St. The event is designed to make the process easier for both adults and minors applying for a U.S. passport for the first time, using Form DS-11. Adults who are eligible to renew their passport using Form DS-82 can apply online or by mail at any time and don't need to attend the fair. MORE: New relief for international travelers to the U.S. amid Trump-era restrictions Will you receive your passport at the fair? Passport acceptance facilities only offer routine and expedited processing services — they don't issue passports on-site. Each application is mailed to the Department of State for review and approval. If you need a passport for travel within two weeks, schedule an appointment at one of the 26 passport agencies or centers across the country. Another passport fair will also be held in July, but no Miami or South Florida locations are scheduled for that month. What documents do you need to apply? ▪ Completed DS-11 application form (do not sign until instructed by the acceptance agent) ▪ Proof of U.S. citizenship (such as an original naturalization certificate) ▪ Government-issued photo ID (driver's license or state ID) ▪ Photocopies of citizenship and identity documents ▪ Passport photo (USPS offers photo services onsite) Fees: $130 for the passport book application plus a $35 acceptance fee. Form DS-11 also allows you to apply for a passport card, which costs $65, but is only valid for domestic flights and sea travel to nearby countries. For minors applying for a passport If you're applying for a passport for a minor, keep the following in mind: ▪ Provide a document that proves your relationship to the child such as a birth certificate or court order. ▪ The child must appear in person with both parents or legal guardians. If only one parent is present, written consent from the absent parent is required. ▪ Include the child's Social Security Number. If unavailable, a signed and dated statement must be submitted under penalty of perjury in accordance with U.S. law.
