Sander Westerveld convinced Florian Wirtz is well worth his £100m fee

The club shattered their previous best – an £85m deal for Darwin Nunez – to secure the services of the Bayer Leverkusen playmaker and Westerveld said the 'little magician' could prove to be transformative.
'He's definitely worth the money, he's a little magician,' Westerveld told the PA news agency.
'I don't want to compare him with other players but he is definitely going to be one of the most exciting players next season.'
Westerveld was speaking at the opening of a Cruyff Court – created by the Cruyff Foundation which bears the name of the Netherlands great Johan – which has been named after him at Liverpool's Lakeside School which caters for pupils with additional learning needs.
The expected arrival of Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez this week, combined with the arrivals of Wirtz, his Leverkusen team-mate Jeremie Frimpong and Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, will take the Premier League champions' spending beyond £200m.
It is owners Fenway Sports Group's biggest transfer window spend since 2018.
'Finally, you would say,' added Westerveld.
'Last season they only bought (Federico) Chiesa, so they haven't spent in the last couple of years as other teams have but I think it was the right moment now.
'They said all the time 'We only spend a lot of our money on players who are adding to the team' and if you see (Florian) Wirtz, (Jeremie) Frimpong and (Milos) Kerkez they are really exciting players.
'Wirtz is one of the best players in Europe and that is really helpful for Liverpool and it's really exciting to see the team coming together now.'
Westerveld did not know his name would be on the Cruyff Court when he formally opened it on Monday.
'It's a very nice surprise and I am proud to have my name on the court. I was tricked into opening it,' he said.
'All the legends, from Johan Cruyff to (Frank) Rijkaard, (Marco) Van Basten to Ruud Gullitt and Virgil van Dijk, have their names on courts so for my name to be in there is a big honour.'

Premier League winner sends come-and-get-me plea to Ryan Reynolds and Wrexham

Wrexham co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have been sent a clear message by a Premier League winner who has more than 250 top flight appearance to his name A Premier League title winner has issued a come-and-get-me plea to Wrexham as they prepare for life in the Championship. The Welsh club have enjoyed a dramatic rise up the divisions since being bought by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney in February 2021, securing promotion in each of their last three seasons. The two actors are now edging closer to achieving their dream of taking Wrexham all the way to the top flight, and have been linked with moves for several big-name players this summer. Leicester City legend Jamie Vardy, Tottenham defender Ben Davies and Fulham captain Tom Cairney are among those connected with a switch to the Racecourse Ground, along with West Ham duo Danny Ings and Aaron Cresswell. ‌ Former Chelsea goalkeeper Asmir Begovic has now expressed an interest in joining Wrexham ahead of their first season in the second tier for 43 years. The 38-year-old, who won the title with Chelsea in 2017, will become a free agent when his contract at Everton expires at the end of June after the Toffees confirmed his deal will not be renewed. ‌ And the veteran Bosnian shot-stopper has admitted he would be keen on playing for the Red Dragons as they look to embark on another promotion push. "Wrexham is a really interesting project, both on the pitch and everything that comes with it," he told Fruity King. "I like working with good people and having watched the documentary, the owners seem like amazing guys. "That is the sort of club I'd love to work with and the idea of Wrexham really interests me. If it's the right situation for everyone then who knows, it's an exciting project." Wrexham already have an established first-choice keeper, with Arsenal academy graduate Arthur Okonkwo holding the No. 1 shirt. However, Begovic's experience could prove useful after making 256 Premier League appearances for Portsmouth, Stoke City, Chelsea, Bournemouth and Everton. He also spent a year with Queens Park Rangers in the Championship during the 2023-24 season, making 46 appearances in all competitions for the West London club. Begovic recently admitted that talks with Everton over his future were short as his second spell with the Merseyside club drew to a close. ‌ "They wanted to change direction a bit and bring in new blood," he told The Athletic. "For me, it was easy. No hard feelings. You respect the decision. We gave it everything and shook hands, having done our job. That's what makes it something you look back on with some fondness." Meanwhile, one of Wrexham's star strikers is on his way out, with the club confirming Paul Mullin's loan move to Wigan on Monday. The 30-year-old has been a talisman for the club since joining in July 2021, scoring more than 110 goals. ‌ However, he fell out of favour under Phil Parkinson during the second half of last season after struggling for form in League One. Mullin was frozen out of the team, only making one appearance after the January transfer window closed. It came after Parkinson strengthened his forward line by signing Reading forward Sam Smith and Burnley's Jay Rodriguez. Mullin recently admitted to feeling resentful about the manager's decision in an interview aired as part of the Welcome to Wrexham documentary on Disney+. The Liverpudlian is now heading to League One side Wigan in the third tier as he looks to revive his career after undergoing back surgery last summer. Wrexham clinched promotion to the Championship in April as two goals from Smith helped fire them to a 3-0 home win over Charlton Athletic. Wrexham AFC: The bookies odds for the Reds in 2025-26

Phil Parkinson's men finished runners-up in League One last term to secure an historic third successive promotion. Back in the second tier for the first time in 43 years, the Reds are are 7/1 with BetVictor, who offer the latest Football Betting, to win a sensational promotion to the Premier League next season. Wrexham are 8/13 to finish in the top half of the table, 3/1 to clinch a a place in the top six and 10/1 to end in the top two. Winning the title might not seen possible in a lot of peoples eyes but BetVictor make Parkinson's side 20/1 to finish top of the pile - joint 10th behind favourites Ipswich Town who are 9/2. Wrexham are priced 8/1 to finish in the bottom three which would condemn the Reds to relegation back to League One while any Reds player to finish as Championship top scorer is 10/1.

Tuesday's briefing: PSG avoid early Club World Cup exit but Atletico Madrid out

But Diego Simeone's Atletico Madrid are packing their bags after a 1-0 win over Botafogo did not prove enough to earn them a place in the last 16. Meanwhile, Brentford appear close to appointing their set-piece coach Keith Andrews as successor to Thomas Frank. M.V.P 👏🏆#FIFACWC — Paris Saint-Germain (@PSG_inside) June 23, 2025 Paris St Germain bounced back from their shock loss to Botafogo to beat Seattle Sounders 2-0 and reach the last 16 of the Club World Cup as Group B winners. Goals from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Achraf Hakimi proved enough for the European champions, who had gone into the game on the brink of a shock early exit from the tournament. Seattle, hosting the game at their own Lumen Stadium, missed a chance to take an early lead through Jesus Ferreira and also pressed late on, but otherwise PSG cruised home. PSG took the lead in the 35th minute when the ball broke to the edge of the box from a corner and Vitinha's shot took a heavy deflection off Kvaratskhelia on its way into the bottom corner. And they sealed their win in the 66th minute moments after Seattle had come close to an equaliser, a swift counter-attack ending in Bradley Barcola squaring the ball for Hakimi to sweep home his side's second. Fulltime in Pasadena. — Atlético de Madrid (@atletienglish) June 23, 2025 Atletico Madrid failed to do enough to progress in the Club World Cup despite claiming a late 1-0 win over Botafogo in Pasadena. Diego Simeone's side had bounced back from a 4-0 thrashing by Paris St Germain in their first Group B game to beat Seattle Sounders – but were still left needing to defeat the Brazilian champions by at least three goals to qualify for the last 16. Instead it was Botafogo who looked more likely to break the deadlock in the early stages with Atletico keeper Jan Oblak saving well to deny Jefferson Savarino and Igor Jesus. Substitute Antoine Griezmann found the net in the 87th minute when he swept home Julian Alvarez's low cross from the left but it was not enough and Botafogo will face the Group A runners-up at the next stage. Keith Andrews has emerged as the leading candidate to take over as Brentford's new head coach, the PA news agency understands. The Bees are continuing their recruitment process to find Thomas Frank's replacement after he left to take over at Premier League rivals Tottenham, and no definitive timescale has been set. Irishman Andrews, 44, joined Brentford last summer and while largely credited with the club's set-piece success, his role at the Gtech Community Stadium is all-encompassing. The former midfielder has built up a strong reputation following coaching roles with Sheffield United, MK Dons and the Republic of Ireland, where he was assistant manager to Stephen Kenny. Following Frank's departure, Brentford are expected to announce a restructure of the coaching set-up ahead of the new Premier League season, which begins at Nottingham Forest on August 16. 𝑾𝒐𝒓𝒌𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒉𝒂𝒓𝒅 in the Orlando sun ☀️😎#FIFACWC #TakeItToTheWorld | 🔜 #SLBFCB — FC Bayern (@FCBayernEN) June 23, 2025 An intriguing finish is in store in Group C at the Club World Cup, where Benfica can guarantee progression to the next stage with victory over already-qualified Bayern Munich. The Portuguese side rebounded from an opening draw with Boca Juniors by hammering hapless Auckland City 6-0 and yet still stand on the brink of elimination. Defeat against the German giants is likely to let in Boca, who are highly likely to find the net multiple times against the outclassed New Zealanders, leaving the destiny of Group C on a knife-edge.
