Sander Westerveld convinced Florian Wirtz is well worth his £100m fee
The club shattered their previous best – an £85m deal for Darwin Nunez – to secure the services of the Bayer Leverkusen playmaker and Westerveld said the 'little magician' could prove to be transformative.
'He's definitely worth the money, he's a little magician,' Westerveld told the PA news agency.
'I don't want to compare him with other players but he is definitely going to be one of the most exciting players next season.'
Westerveld was speaking at the opening of a Cruyff Court – created by the Cruyff Foundation which bears the name of the Netherlands great Johan – which has been named after him at Liverpool's Lakeside School which caters for pupils with additional learning needs.
The expected arrival of Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez this week, combined with the arrivals of Wirtz, his Leverkusen team-mate Jeremie Frimpong and Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, will take the Premier League champions' spending beyond £200m.
It is owners Fenway Sports Group's biggest transfer window spend since 2018.
'Finally, you would say,' added Westerveld.
'Last season they only bought (Federico) Chiesa, so they haven't spent in the last couple of years as other teams have but I think it was the right moment now.
'They said all the time 'We only spend a lot of our money on players who are adding to the team' and if you see (Florian) Wirtz, (Jeremie) Frimpong and (Milos) Kerkez they are really exciting players.
'Wirtz is one of the best players in Europe and that is really helpful for Liverpool and it's really exciting to see the team coming together now.'
Westerveld did not know his name would be on the Cruyff Court when he formally opened it on Monday.
'It's a very nice surprise and I am proud to have my name on the court. I was tricked into opening it,' he said.
'All the legends, from Johan Cruyff to (Frank) Rijkaard, (Marco) Van Basten to Ruud Gullitt and Virgil van Dijk, have their names on courts so for my name to be in there is a big honour.'

The 38-year-old, who won the title with Chelsea in 2017, will become a free agent when his contract at Everton expires at the end of June after the Toffees confirmed his deal will not be renewed. And the veteran Bosnian shot-stopper has admitted he would be keen on playing for the Red Dragons as they look to embark on another promotion push. "Wrexham is a really interesting project, both on the pitch and everything that comes with it," he told Fruity King. "I like working with good people and having watched the documentary, the owners seem like amazing guys. "That is the sort of club I'd love to work with and the idea of Wrexham really interests me. Wrexham already have an established first-choice keeper, with Arsenal academy graduate Arthur Okonkwo holding the No. 1 shirt. However, Begovic's experience could prove useful after making 256 Premier League appearances for Portsmouth, Stoke City, Chelsea, Bournemouth and Everton. He also spent a year with Queens Park Rangers in the Championship during the 2023-24 season, making 46 appearances in all competitions for the West London club. Begovic recently admitted that talks with Everton over his future were short as his second spell with the Merseyside club drew to a close. "They wanted to change direction a bit and bring in new blood," he told The Athletic. "For me, it was easy. No hard feelings. You respect the decision. We gave it everything and shook hands, having done our job. That's what makes it something you look back on with some fondness." Meanwhile, one of Wrexham's star strikers is on his way out, with the club confirming Paul Mullin's loan move to Wigan on Monday. The 30-year-old has been a talisman for the club since joining in July 2021, scoring more than 110 goals. However, he fell out of favour under Phil Parkinson during the second half of last season after struggling for form in League One. Mullin was frozen out of the team, only making one appearance after the January transfer window closed. It came after Parkinson strengthened his forward line by signing Reading forward Sam Smith and Burnley's Jay Rodriguez. Mullin recently admitted to feeling resentful about the manager's decision in an interview aired as part of the Welcome to Wrexham documentary on Disney+.
