Mamelodi Sundowns defender Grant Kekana believes their second appearance at the FIFA Club World Cup was a vital learning experience — and clear proof that African clubs can match global footballing standards.
Sundowns, who previously featured in the tournament in 2016, earned their place this time through continued domestic and continental dominance.
And while their campaign ended in the group stages, Kekana insists the Brazilians showed enough resilience and structure to believe they belong on the biggest stage.
'It was a good learning experience,' said the 32-year-old.
'It's a tournament that shows we are capable and have the talent to compete. We weren't humiliated or overrun — we just ran out of time in most games.'
One of the standout moments of the campaign came in the 4-3 loss to Borussia Dortmund, where Sundowns went toe-to-toe with the Bundesliga giants and only fell short in the closing stages.
The match drew praise across the continent for the PSL side's fearless approach.
Kekana described that encounter as the toughest test of the tournament, particularly from a tactical and technical point of view.
'In terms of quality, Dortmund were the hardest,' he said.
'Their movement off the ball was really good, and they were very clinical in front of goal. It was a game of small margins.'
Those margins, Kekana says, ultimately underline the next level African clubs need to reach if they're to win games, not just compete.
'That's the difference — efficiency,' he explained.
'We need to be more clinical. When you get chances against teams like that, you have to take them. That's what separates the best.'

Advertisement Next Stay Close ✕ Ad loading While the anniversary celebrations may take centre stage, De Bruyne's mission in South Africa holds equal importance. The 33-year-old midfielder is in the country to support and promote the KDB Cup, an international under-15 football tournament that he founded. This initiative aims to nurture the next generation of football talent, showcasing De Bruyne's commitment to giving back to the sport. Fans in Acornhoek, a local township in Mpumalanga, showed their love for the star footballer as he visited a local school. A video also showcased De Bruyne engaging with excited local children, playing diski (a traditional South African football game) whilst imparting valuable skills on how to score. These joyful interactions with the youth underscore his role as both a professional athlete and a mentor. Interestingly, De Bruyne's connection to Africa runs deeper than his current visit. His mother, Anna, was born in East Africa, where her family owned oil companies, and she later lived in Ivory Coast. This African heritage adds a layer of cultural richness to De Bruyne's identity, as he has previously garnered interest in representing Burundi at the international level. De Bruyne's personal life is filled with affection as well. Having met his wife on Twitter (now X) in 2014, the couple tied the knot in 2017 and are now parents to three children: two sons and a daughter. In a touching 2019 interview with The Players' Tribune, he paid tribute to Michèle, acknowledging her profound impact on his life, saying, 'She changed my life in so many ways. Honestly, I don't know what I would do without her.' For De Bruyne, she remains the most significant person in his world. As Kevin De Bruyne enjoys the beauty of Mpumalanga alongside his wife, he also passionately works to inspire future generations of footballers, blending the personal and professional into a remarkable journey of love and commitment.

This week, in Kinshasa, DRC, the Professional Fighters League had an open workout as part of a roadshow in the lead-up to the big show at the foot of Africa. There, in front of the media and hundreds of excited MMA fans, Ukah and Niedermayr showcased their skills and ran through some training drills before facing off for the first time ahead of their highly anticipated showdown. Ukah Excited for PFL Africa Debut: Aims to Shine in Fight Against Ceileigh 'I'm very happy to be on the first PFL Africa card, and my fight with Ceileigh is going to be an exciting one. We're going to be representing the two biggest MMA nations in Africa, and we want to help put African MMA in the global spotlight,' said the unbeaten Ukah, who is on a six-fight winning streak that includes two wins in the Extreme Fighting Championship, the leading African-based MMA promotion. 'Compared to her, I think I'm the more experienced fighter and the better striker, so I'm comfortable wherever the fight goes. I expect to get the finish, but I don't mind going to a third round if needed,' added Ukah who has gone to decision in five fights. Niedermayr Prepares for Historic PFL Africa Women's Fight Fellow EFC fighter and South Africa's Niedermayr, who has also previously competed at UAE Warriors and Fury Challenger Series (USA), is revelling in the moment as she looks to shine in one of the biggest MMA brands on the globe. I have a lot of respect for Juliet as a fighter, and I welcome the chance to test myself against her, but I don't think she's ever faced anyone like me. I'm expecting an exciting, high-level battle — and I'm ready for it.' The inaugural PFL Africa Tournament will feature eight-man brackets in each weight class, starting with the Heavyweight and Bantamweight divisions next month. In total, 32 fighters representing 15 African nations will compete across the four PFL Africa divisions in 2025 as the league embarks on a continent-wide journey to crown the first-ever PFL Africa Champions.
