TN government lists out achievements in agri, dairy, fisheries sectors
The State's average agricultural growth, which stood at 1.36% between 2012-13 and 2020-21, has achieved a record average of 5.66% from 2021 to 2024, the Tamil Nadu government said on Sunday (May 18, 2025). The area under irrigation in the State, which was 36.07 lakh hectares in 2020-21, increased to 38.33 lakh hectares in 2023-24, resulting in a remarkable increase in food production, it said.
In an official release, the State government listed out the steps being undertaken for giving impetus given to the agriculture, dairy development, fisheries sectors. Through five separate agriculture budgets, a total allocation of ₹1,94,076 crore has been made to the sector. It said it has introduced and implemented several new programmes to boost agricultural production and enhance the welfare of the farming community.
Tamil Nadu ranked first in India in the productivity of finger millet (ragi) and guava and held the second position in the country in the productivity of maize, sugarcane, tamarind, tapioca, jasmine, and oilseeds. Under the Kalaignar All Village Integrated Agricultural Development Scheme, 47,286 acres of fallow land have been brought under cultivation in 10,187 village panchayats at a cost of ₹786.86 crore.
Under the Agricultural Mechanisation scheme, agricultural machinery and implements worth ₹499.45 crore were distributed to 62,820 farmers with subsidy, it said. A total of 1,652 new farm machineries have been procured and, through e-hiring (e-vaadagai) mobile service, about 69,000 farmers have been benefited, it said. Over 900 tanks across 27 districts were renovated at a cost of ₹1,212 crore.
To benefit small and marginal farmers and to increase agricultural production, 814 minor irrigation tanks were renovated at a cost of ₹75.59 crore. Over 88 check dams have been constructed in 24 districts at a cost of ₹519 crore, helping maintain groundwater levels.
Milk production was 8,362 metric tonnes in 2018-19 during the previous administration but due to the initiatives of the DMK government, it has been raised it to 10,808 metric tonnes in 2023-24, it said. The annual egg production has risen from ₹1,884.22 crore in 2018–2019 to ₹2,233.25 crore in 2023–24.
In the fisheries sector, the State government has established 72 new fish landing centres at a cost of ₹1,428 crore. The CM has also implemented several schemes to develop fisheries in areas such as Tharangambadi, Rameswaram, and Thiruvotriyur Kuppam, it said.

German firm Festo opens manufacturing plant in Hosur, invests ₹500 crore
Germany-headquartered Festo has inaugurated a state-of-the-art manufacturing plant in Hosur, Tamil Nadu, entailing investments to the tune of ₹500 crore. The plant will initially generate more than 1,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities. There are plans to scale operations and workforce in the coming years. The new plant will focus on the production of advanced pneumatic automation components. This particular facility spans over 75 acres of developed industrial land to serve domestic and global markets with high-precision automation solutions. 'We are immensely proud to celebrate 100 years of Festo by reinforcing our commitment to India through this new facility,' said Thomas Böck, chairman of the management board of Festo. 'This plant not only strengthens our local manufacturing capabilities but also reflects our vision of sustainable growth and technological leadership for the next 100 years.' According to a statement, Festo is strongly positioned in all geographic regions to develop innovative solutions for customers fast and flexibly on site. 'To this end, the company is further expanding its global R&D, global production, and logistics locations, as well as its supply chain. In doing so, Festo is focusing on increasing regionalisation, 'local for local' – also to shorten transport routes and value chains, making them more resilient and minimising emissions,' the statement mentioned. During the Global Investors Meet 2024, the first investors meet of the DMK government, Festo India gave a commitment to establish a greenfield manufacturing facility for pneumatic components in Krishnagiri district with a proposed investment of ₹520 crore, creating over 2,000 jobs. With headquarters in Esslingen am Neckar, Germany, Festo supplies pneumatic and electrical automation technology to 300,000 customers of factory and process automation in over 35 industries. During the year 2024, Festo achieved a turnover of around €3.45 billion.

Tamil Nadu Congress invites DMDK to join INDIA bloc amid rift with AIADMK
CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) president K Selvaperunthagai on Tuesday invited Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) to join the INDIA bloc led by the DMK in Tamil Nadu. This has come amid signs of discontent brewing in the DMDK camp over being 'sidelined' by the AIADMK, especially in the recent Rajya Sabha seat allocation. DMDK general secretary Premalatha Vijayakant recently expressed disappointment over the AIADMK's alleged failure to honour a 'pre-poll assurance' to allot a Rajya Sabha seat to her party. The DMDK was part of the AIADMK-led alliance during the 2024 Lok Sabha election. Responding to a query on Premalatha's public gratitude to the DMK for passing a condolence resolution in honour of DMDK founder Vijayakant at its recent general council meeting, Selvaperunthagai said, 'This is my personal opinion, but I believe DMDK should align with the INDIA bloc under DMK's leadership. We welcome them wholeheartedly.' The TNCC chief's invitation is seen as a political signal at a time when the DMDK is reassessing its future. It may be noted that Premalatha also paid tribute to DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi on his 102nd birth anniversary.
