Carlota Ciganda wins Meijer LPGA Classic for her first LPGA Tour victory in more than 8 1/2 years
BELMONT, Mich. (AP) — Carlota Ciganda birdied the final two holes to win the Meijer LPGA Classic on Sunday for her first LPGA Tour victory in more than 8 1/2 years, while Lexi Thompson had two late bogeys to dash her bid to end a long drought of her own. Ciganda hit to a foot to set up her birdie on the par-4 17th, then made a 4-foot comebacker on the par-5 18th to avoid a playoff with playing partner Hye-Jin Choi. Part of a six-way tie to start the day at Blythefield County Club, Ciganda shot a 5-under 67 — her fourth straight round in the 60s — to finish at 16-under 272 on the tree-lined layout in the final event before the major KPMG Women's PGA Championship in Texas. The 35-year-old Spanish player won for the first time since the 2016 Lorena Ochoa Invitational, a span of 8 years, 7 months, 2 days. She has three LPGA Tour victories and has won eight times on the Ladies European Tour, the last in December in the Spanish Women's Open. Choi finished with a 68, also shooting in the 60s all four days. Fellow South Korean player Somi Lee was third at 14 under after a 65. Thompson had a 70 to tie for fourth with Celine Boutier (67) and Nanna Koerstz Madsen (70). Thompson, the 2015 winner at Blythefield, won the last of her 11 LPGA Tour titles in early June 2019 at the ShopRite LPGA Classic. She made her sixth start of the season in a part-time tour schedule, and also is set to play next week in the major at PGA Frisco. The 30-year-old from Florida ran into trouble on the par-4 16th. She tried to leave the ball below the hole on the elevated green, but her approach rolled off the front of the green and down a hill into rough. She hit a flop shot to 8 feet and missed the par putt. On 17, she missed a 3-footer to end. Last year in the event, Thompson lost in a playoff to Lilia Vu. Ciganda matched Beatriz Recari for the most victories by a Spanish player. The former Arizona State player is the oldest LPGA Tour winner since Eun-Hee Ji at 36 in the 2022 T-Mobile Match Play. ___ AP golf:

Padres' Jackson Merrill placed on 7-day injured list
PHOENIX (AP) — The San Diego Padres have placed All-Star outfielder Jackson Merrill on the seven-day injured list on Sunday, a day after he suffered a concussion during Saturday night's game against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Merrill was injured in the seventh inning when he attempted a stolen base, but was tagged out by Arizona second baseman Ketel Marte. The tag came on Merrill's helmet as he slid head first and he was down for several minutes before walking off the field. He was replaced in the field by Brandon Lockridge. Merrill, 22, is batting .304 with five homers. He finished second in voting for the National League Rookie of the Year and ninth for NL MVP last year after hitting 24 homers, driving in 90 runs and posting a .292 batting average. Trenton Brooks was called up from Triple-A El Paso to replace Merrill on the Padres' roster. Brooks, 29, was batting .311 with 14 homers and 54 RBIs at El Paso. The first baseman hit .120 in 25 at-bats for the San Francisco Giants last year. ___ AP MLB:

Ousmane Dembélé is not in PSG's lineup for Club World Cup opener against Atléti
Associated Press PASADENA, Calif. (AP) — Paris Saint-Germain star Ousmane Dembele was not in the starting lineup for the Champions League winners' opening match in the Club World Cup against Atlético Madrid. Dembélé also wasn't listed among the substitutes Sunday at the Rose Bowl for PSG's first match since trouncing Inter Milan 5-0 two weeks ago to win its first Champions League title. The 28-year-old Dembélé is a strong candidate for the Ballon d'Or after his outstanding season for PSG, but he reportedly injured his left quadriceps while playing for France against Spain on June 6. Portuguese striker Goncalo Ramos replaced Dembélé in PSG's starting lineup against Atlético. Coach Luis Enrique otherwise used the same starting lineup from his club's blowout victory over Inter on May 31 in Munich. Dembélé produced 33 goals and 15 assists in 49 appearances across all competitions for PSG's treble winners this season. PSG and Atlético are in a Club World Cup group with Brazil's Botafogo and Major League Soccer's Seattle Sounders. ___ AP soccer: in this topic
