Georgia's insurance commissioner looks to crack down on insurance company mistakes
Georgia's insurance commissioner recovered more than $100 million since 2019 from insurance companies for consumers.
But many Georgians don't even know they can file a complaint.
When a tree fell on Jorge Diez's Buckhead home in February, his insurance company refused to pay for temporary housing for his family, including his 2-year-old daughter, who was recovering from ear surgery.

He said, "I mean, we can't cook. There's a hole in the roof. The flooring has been taken up."
Next, Diez did what any Georgian can. He filed a complaint with the State Insurance Commissioner.
Insurance Commissioner John King said his office has recovered more than $100 million for consumers from insurance companies since 2019.
"File a complaint. We will investigate it," he said.
His office gets about 10,000 complaints each year.
King said, "There's some companies that sometimes have a gap in judgment, and that's our job, is to hold them accountable. We want them to honor the terms of the contract that they had with their customer. Nothing more, nothing less."
After Diez filed his complaint with the state, his insurance company reversed its decision.
"Really. It was like magic," Diez said. 'I mean, it was like clockwork. What the insurance company should have been doing from the very beginning, they finally decided to do after they got a phone call.'
Commissioner King is now asking the legislature to grant him more power to fine insurance companies who refuse to fix mistakes.
Right now, by law, his office can only fine those insurance companies a maximum of $5,000 per offense.
'$5,000 per incident, I think, is woefully inadequate,' he said.

Forsyth County leaders approve $225 million development in hopes of attracting the NHL
Forsyth County leaders voted unanimously to approve a major development, all in hopes of bringing a pro hockey team to north Georgia. This was the final vote on the $225 million project and a critical step in efforts to attract a hockey team. It's named 'The Gathering at South Forsyth' and would be located along Georgia 400 between Alpharetta and Cumming. The National Hockey League has not said it plans to expand and bring a franchise to the Atlanta market. However, Krause says the demand is here and his development can accommodate a team. 'A lot of people in this state believe we should have a hockey team. I believe we're gonna have one,' Krause said. Forsyth County commissioners agreed to provide $225 million in bond financing, but only if The Gathering lands a pro hockey team. With county officials approving these final, critical documents, Krause plans to meet with the NHL commissioner after the Stanley Cup playoffs. It's been a lot of hard work by a lot of people. It's nice to see when your hard work, our team has worked hard, it has paid off,' Krause explained. Krause says he talked with Commissioner Gary Bettman this week. He says if this final approval from the county came today, Bettman would meet with him after the NHL finals. Krause says he expects a decision from the NHL about expansion at the latest by the end of this year.

Neighbors, business owners on Cascade Road fed up with years of construction
Neighbors and business owners along a busy corridor in southwest Atlanta just want to see the end to construction and detours. For over three years, more than two miles of Cascade Road have been under construction. 'We are watching our community slowly poisoned to death,' one neighbor said. 'I don't know if I can make it though the peak season because of construction,' one owner said. Neighbors have also complained about sections of the road already completed. Channel 2 Action News showed you video last month of the narrow lanes. After the sidewalks were widened for bikers and walkers, it left little room for cars, let alone buses, garbage trucks and emergency vehicles to pass each other. Atlanta City Councilmember Marci Collier Overstreet said the goal of the project was to slow down traffic and make it safe. Officials brought out two firetrucks last week to see if they fit side-by-side. 'The demonstration showed it was too narrow…100%," Overstreet said.
