City of Vincent curbs e-scooter rentals following the death of 51-year-old pedestrian Thanh Phan in Perth
Another council has pulled the pin on e-scooter rentals a day after the City of Perth suspended the service following the death of 51-year-old pedestrian Thanh Phan.
Mr Phan was allegedly struck down from behind by an intoxicated rider in Perth's CBD about 8.40pm on Saturday.
He suffered a brain bleed and was rushed to hospital, but died from his injuries days later.
British tourist Alicia Kemp, 24, now faces charges of dangerous driving occasioning bodily harm and dangerous driving occasioning death after Mr Phan died.
Police allege she was under the influence of alcohol with a 26-year-old passenger on board, before she hit Mr Phan.
The City of Vincent's decision to suspend e-scooter hires while it reviews the service comes a day after its neighbour, the City of Perth, suspended the service in response to the fatality.
Vincent informed its residents e-scooters were no longer be available for hire until further notice and all hireable e-scooters would be removed from the streets within the next 48 hours.
Vincent Mayor Alison Xamon said they were very saddened to hear about Mr Phan's death.
'Like our neighbours at Perth, we have decided to temporarily suspend our trial so we can review the safety of the hireable e-scooters and consider ways to improve this service or if it even needs to continue,' she said.
'We will continue to work closely with our service providers on potential changes to their operations here in Vincent.'
Ms Xamon said public safety was a top priority and they would consider if safety-related measures such as time-of-day restrictions could be implemented on e-scooters.
Australian Medical Association WA president Michael Page told NewsWire at least one person a day was admitted to WA's trauma unit with major injuries caused from e-scooters.
Dr Page said the number of patients with really serious traumatic injuries from e-scooters had been increasing and they were seeing people being admitted with serious head injuries, bone fractures, life altering injuries and sometimes fatal injuries.
'It's really a scourge in terms of injuries in our society and the problem with these council endorsed private hire e-scooters in city centres is people are hopping on without any experience riding e scooters,' he said.
'They're often intoxicated. They might be riding at night. They might not be wearing proper protection and so the chance for something to go wrong is, is very, very high.'
While the AMAWA are not calling for a total ban of e-scooters, Dr Page said hire schemes endorsed by councils to activate city centres and bring vibrancy were a risk
'The question really has to be, does the benefit outweigh the risks when we're seeing deaths and many injuries?' he said.
'They are dangerous you've got plenty of evidence from other cities around the world, other countries around the world, from across WA that these schemes are not very safe.'

Tasmanian police officers have found two bodies believed to be those of Queenslanders Leannedra Kang and Takahiro Toya. The couple, aged in their 20s, were reported missing on Wednesday, the day they were meant to return to Brisbane after a road trip around Tasmania. But the pair did not board their flight from Launceston to Brisbane or return their rental car that day. Tasmania Police Inspector Luke Manhood said on Friday police found a crashed car in a river off Tebrakunna Road in the state's north-east. The bodies were found nearby shortly after. "At this early stage, it appears they were travelling over a bridge when the vehicle has left the roadway and ended up in the water," Inspector Manhood said. "Our initial investigations suggest there are no suspicious circumstances, but further forensic examinations will now take place as is the usual process, and a report will be prepared for the coroner." "We would like to thank community members for their efforts in providing information to assist in the search." According to police, Ms Kang and Mr Toya left Hobart on June 3 and planned to travel to Richmond, Ross, Bicheno, Bay of Fires and Mole Creek. Ms Kang's sister Cassandra Kang said the couple often enjoyed road trips together in their home state but this was their first trip interstate.

Caroline Springs shopping centre thrown into lockdown after alleged machete argument
A shopping centre in Melbourne's west has been locked down after the second incident involving machetes in a fortnight. Victoria Police said a group of between five and six males armed with machetes were arguing inside the CS Square shopping centre in Caroline Springs about 6:40pm on Friday. The centre went into lockdown as police arrived and officers found the group had already fled the scene. No injuries have been reported and police say the investigation is ongoing. Authorities are urging any witnesses or anyone with footage of the incident to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or online. The lockdown came after a dramatic pre-organised gang brawl involving machetes inside the Northland Shopping Centre in Preston forced its evacuation in May. Seven people have since been arrested and charged over the Preston incident. Following the incident, the Victorian government enacted a total sales ban on machetes on May 28. However, the possession of a machete will not become prohibited until a legislated ban comes into effect on September 1. The penalty for Victorians in possession of a machete will be a fine of more than $47,000 or two years in jail.

‘Different type of grief': Jelena Dokic opens up about her father's death, vulnerability and her future
It's been nearly a month since Jelena Dokic announced her abusive father's passing, and she is still trying to work out how she feels. In May, Jelena confirmed the death of her 67-year-old father, Damir, on social media, who subjected her to years of torment, abuse and physical violence on and off the courts. Sitting in the booth of a cafe in Melbourne, the former No. 4 tennis player-turned-commentator and public speaker told NewsWire she knew her father's death 'would happen at some stage' but is still 'working through' her grieving process, which is more complicated than she anticipated. 'I've been estranged from my father for nearly 10 years, and it is what it is,' she said. 'The one thing I'm realising … whether you've had a good experience with a parent or a bad one, it comes with a complicated kind of grief, closure, or the way that chapter ends.' She found out about her estranged father's death while she was 'right in the middle of work and a lot of commitments', leaving her without much room to process the loss. 'For me, it's different type of grief,' she told NewsWire. 'Maybe not even grief, but more so like closure or a chapter that's kind of finished, but from an estranged parent.' But it's in the quiet times with her small circle of friends, who she refers to as her 'ride or dies', where she can peel away the layers and let the grief settle. Growing up concealing the abuse and suffering she lived with every day led to feelings of shame and fear, building up emotional walls to shield her painful experience from others as she tried to fight the battle alone. A self-admitted introvert, it hasn't been easy for her to develop trustworthy and loyal relationships over her career, as a combination of constantly travelling the world in tennis tournaments and the abuse she was subjected to by her father put a pin in any chance of forging meaningful connections with others her own age. 'Some victims of and survivors of domestic violence and abuse … are not allowed to make friends,' she told NewsWire. 'Anyone that gets close, (the abuser will) get rid of them, especially when we're young.' 'Making friends for a very long time was not even possible, but then later it was difficult because I didn't kind of have those social skills,' she said. While she can't turn back the clock, Jelena hopes to inspire others who may be suffering alone, and encourage them to speak out. She is currently in the process of writing a third book – which will hit bookshelves late next year – this time revealing the mindset and self-development she has gained.
