
Inside Canada's Northern Super League: A new soccer league created by players for players
It began as locker room chatter, a pipedream that soccer players fantasized about between practices.
Today, that dream becomes reality when Vancouver Rise FC faces Calgary Wild FC in the inaugural game of the newly formed Canadian women's soccer league – the Northern Super League (NSL).
For the first time, Canadian professional women's soccer players will play for Canadian professional women's teams on Canadian soil. And, if league founder Diana Matheson has her way, the country's young talent will soon be part of a broader push to strengthen not only the league but the national team too.

'In the last five, six years, we saw how much investment was going (into women's soccer) around the world,' Matheson said. 'It was clear wherever countries — like Spain, like England — invested in their professional leagues, you just saw immediate impact at the national team level.'
When the Olympic bronze medalist, who played in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) for eight years in the U.S., retired in 2021 after several seasons plagued by injury, she knew that the time to form a league was now. Wait any longer, and the global women's soccer industry would grow too much and Canada wouldn't be able to compete for talent and branding.
The problem: no one was making any moves.
Matheson, who is now the NSL's chief growth officer, completed a Master of business administration (MBA) at Queen's University thanks to a generous grant from the Canadian Olympic Committee, topped it off with a program set up by UEFA that helps former players transition to the business side, and, along with business partner Thomas Gilbert, took on the herculean task of bringing a league to life.
Less than three years on, the league has six founding franchises: Calgary Wild FC, Halifax Tides FC, Montreal Roses FC, Ottawa Rapid FC, AFC Toronto, and Vancouver Rise FC. Games run from April through October and branding partners include Coca-Cola, Toyota and Canadian Tire.

Former Kansas City Current midfielder and Canadian Olympic gold medalist Desiree Scott has come out of retirement to play for Ottawa Rapid FC. She called Matheson the 'perfect person' to form the league. 'You don't say no to a Diana,' Scott said.
Matheson, who played abroad in Norway before joining the NWSL from its inception in 2013, had a clear vision of what she wanted the NSL to look like. She'd had the chance to learn from the American league's growing pains, and called the fact she was starting from the ground up, 'a gift.'

The NSL's official tagline invites fans to, 'Be where it all begins.' More than just a call to action, it highlights a distinct sense that everyone is invested in avoiding past mistakes. After the 2022 investigations that found years of systemically ignored sexual harassment and abuse within the NWSL, and amid a generalized culture of abuse in women's sports, there's a certain weight to the fact that the NSL is made by women, for women — and by players, for players.
Expanded maternity leave, guaranteed contracts and players not being waived or traded without their consent — historic gains made by the NWSL's 2024 collective bargaining agreement — have been organically built into the NSL's standard player agreement.
'It shouldn't take seven years to have a good relationship with your players,' Matheson said. With no collective bargaining agreement in place (NSL teams only recently had the players needed to form a committee), the focus is on providing a high standard of care off the bat with strong channels of communication.
'I was part of the NWSL in its inaugural year,' Scott said. 'We're already leaps and bounds ahead of what the NWSL was in year one, even in terms of just having our own space, the conversations we're having, facilities being built. I feel like we have a voice from the jump, which I think is super important for players to be invested in as well.'
When midfielder Sofia Hagman was offered the chance to play for Vancouver Rise FC, she could not have been more impressed with the whole package.
'This is what I have been dreaming of my whole entire career,' Hagland said. 'Creating this world-class environment that is not only felt for women's soccer in Canada but also (on) the global stage.'
Hailing from Sweden, Hagman said she feels much less of a culture shock in Vancouver than she did on other contracts. She described considerations as simple as a weekly training schedule being a huge step up from what she experienced in Spain with Sporting de Huelva. There, she would get a text the night before outlining what time training would be in the morning. Now, she's able to plan her week, balancing her personal life while preparing for practice.

'They want us to succeed so badly, so they're just giving us all the tools you can possibly think of for success,' she said.
International players will always be a key ingredient in elevating the caliber of any club or league. But Matheson said that her priority is still developing Canadian players to broaden the field of talent for the national team. Right now, that means enticing Canadians back to Canada. So far, they have four current national team players signed to NSL clubs. The goal, she said, will be to have approximately one-third of the Women's World Cup roster playing for the NSL by the 2027 tournament in Brazil.
Speaking from national team training camp earlier this month, Emma Regan, who signed with AFC Toronto after stints in the UK and Denmark, gave a glowing report of her new team and the facilities she's been able to enjoy.
'(Playing in) Europe was an amazing experience, and I'm really glad that I did that,' Regan said. 'But there's just a sense of pride to play in Canada for a Canadian team.'
Canada national team coach Casey Stoney understands the importance of a domestic league. As part of the Women's Super League in England as a player and coach, she saw the direct support it provided the national team on its decade-long journey to become European champions.
'Ten years later, no coincidence, they win the Euros. I know how important it is to have a league in your home country. It builds communities around the teams, grows the fanbase, and ensures that young players have a platform to develop and progress through the pathway without having to go elsewhere,' Stoney said. 'I believe that's essential for the future of our game in Canada.'
Despite the many initial successes of the nascent league, Matheson found that there were many times she was surprised by how difficult it was to build — and run — a league.

'We're coming from a player background,' Matheson said. 'A lot of things, to a player, are like, 'Oh, why can't the league or club just do that thing better?' And then as soon as you see under the hood, you realize, 'Oh that's much harder than you thought.''
Matheson described the process of creating a game schedule for the league as particularly gruelling.
Like many NWSL teams, NSL teams are second or third tenants in many shared stadiums. That means waiting for other leagues to set their schedules first. For example, AFC Toronto will share York Stadium with York University's varsity teams, Major League Rugby's Toronto Arrows, as well as the men's Canadian Premier League team, York United.
The NSL must then take the few days the stadiums are available, match them with broadcast availability and match that with the international calendar before juggling each club's individual dates with one another. It was one of the many things Matheson was glad to delegate as the business grew.
Looking ahead, future growth depends on building an audience. Matheson said they have metrics that show there's been a solid Canadian fanbase following women's soccer since at least 2012, and sponsors were ready to get on board. In 2015, when Canada hosted the Women's World Cup, 20.8 million Canadian viewers tuned in, nearly one-third of all Canadian households.
The next steps involve monetizing media rights. As a new league, they invested $3 million into game production to start, with the goal of reaching as many people as possible by airing games on TSN and CBC in Canada and on ESPN+ in the U.S., and uch of the funds for investments come from corporate partners — a C$1 million per annum injection from Canadian soccer and the NSL franchise buy-in of C$1 million.
The branding of NSL is key to its success as well. The league intentionally doesn't use the words 'women' or 'Canada' in its name. Players who don't identify as women are welcome. Matheson also noted that if you look at the world's top sporting leagues — the Premier League, the National Football League, the National Basketball Association — none of those specify gender or nationality either.

'We want to be inclusive. We want to be women-led. We want to be really, proudly Canadian. And we also want to be an internationally competitive women's sports league,' Matheson said.
With former players Christine Sinclair, Mary Bowie, and of course Matheson all part of leadership, there's a sense that they're making a playing environment they wish they'd had for themselves. How that shakes out over the next few years remains to be seen, but a standard's been set and as the eye of politics increasingly scrutinizes women's sports, it's clear that the players come first.
'For me, what this league is about, is making a place for those future stars we don't know yet,' Matheson said. 'And I'm excited to see who those are, and for Canadians to meet them.'

College sports commissioners laud $2.8B antitrust settlement, call for Congress to act
Associated Press Conference commissioners lauded a judge's approval of a $2.8 billion antitrust lawsuit settlement as a means for bringing stability and fairness to an out-of-control college athletics industry but acknowledged there would be growing pains in implementing its terms. In a 30-minute virtual news conference Monday, commissioners of the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12 and SEC renewed their call for congressional action to supplement and even codify the settlement and emphasized that cooperation at every level of college sports would be necessary to make it work. They said it was too early to address how violators of rules surrounding revenue sharing and name, image and likeness agreements would be punished and noted newly hired College Sports Commission CEO Bryan Seeley would play a major role in determining penalties. The new era of college athletics has arrived after U.S. District Judge Claudia Wilken gave final approval Friday night to what's known as House vs. NCAA. Beginning July 1, each school can share up to about $20.5 million with their athletes and third-party NIL deals worth $600 or more will be analyzed to make sure they pay appropriate 'market value' for the services being provided by athletes. Some of the topics addressed Monday: Binding conferences to terms The conferences drafted a document that would bind institutions to enforcement policies even if their state laws are contradictory. It would require schools to waive their right to pursue legal challenges against the CSC. It also would exempt the commission from lawsuits from member schools over enforcement decisions, instead offering arbitration as the main settlement option. Consequences for not signing the agreement would include risking the loss of league membership and participation against other teams from the Power Four conferences. Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark said the document remains a work in progress but that he's gotten no pushback from his schools. 'I look to get that executed here in short order,' he said, "and know it will be very necessary for all the conferences to execute as well.' Directives on revenue sharing There has been no directive given to individual schools on how to determine the allocation of revenue-sharing payments, commissioners said. It's widely acknowledged that athletes in football and basketball are expected to receive the majority of the money. 'I know for all five of us no one is forgetting about their Olympic sports and continuing to make sure we've invested a high level for all of our sports,' ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips said. College Sports Commission CEO The commissioners said Seeley, as Major League Baseball executive vice president of legal and operations, was uniquely qualified to lead the CSC, which is charged with making sure schools adhere to the rules. 'Culture doesn't change overnight," Seeley told The Athletic over the weekend. "I don't expect that to happen overnight, but I do think that the schools that have signed on to the settlement want rules and want rules to be enforced. Otherwise they wouldn't have signed on to the settlement. I think student-athletes want a different system. So I think there is a desire for rules enforcement. There's a desire for transparency.' Sankey said Seeley is well-versed in areas of implementation, development and adjustment of rules and in NIL disputes requiring arbitration. Yormark said: 'You want people not to run away from a situation but to run to a situation. He ran here, and he's very passionate to make a difference and to course correct what's been going on in the industry.' Skepticism about enforcement Deloitte's 'NIL Go' program and LBI Software will track NIL deals and revenue-sharing contracts, and the commissioners shot down skepticism about the ability of those tools to enforce terms of the settlement. SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey said football and basketball coaches he spoke with in February were unanimous in wanting regulation. 'They have the responsibility to make what they asked for work,' he said. Congressional action NCAA President Charlie Baker has been pushing Congress for a limited antitrust exemption that would protect college sports from another series of lawsuits, and the commissioners want a uniform federal NIL law that would supersede wide-ranging state laws. 'We're not going to have Final Fours and College Football Playoffs and College World Series with 50 different standards,' Sankey said, 'so that's a starting point.' Trump cancels $87 million grant for planned low-carbon cement plant in Holyoke
HOLYOKE — President Donald Trump's administration recently canceled an $87 million grant issued to Sublime Systems, whose low-carbon cement manufacturing plant is scheduled to open in Holyoke in 2027. Sublime has technology developed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to make cement using electricity, a process designed to cut down the amount of carbon released by a traditionally emission-heavy process. It planned to employ 70 to 90 people with production expected to begin in 2027 or 2028. It already secured and cleared a 16-acre site in Holyoke's industrial flats area. Sublime chose the area, in part, because of Holyoke's hydropower, which is a successor to the 19th century turbines that made Holyoke famous as the 'Paper City.' Sublime is still seeking financing despite the loss of federal money. 'All our meetings with the Sublime team indicate this project is moving forward,' said Aaron Vega, head of planning and economic development for Holyoke. 'We do not yet have site plans submitted for review, but the city has had pre-application meetings with their design team and are working through the issues and opportunities at their location.' U.S. Rep. Richard E. Neal, D-Springfield, said the Trump administration terminated $3.7 billion in grants issued by the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Clean Energy. That includes the Holyoke grant. 'The Trump Administration's decision to kill critical clean energy projects is deeply irresponsible and is a betrayal of American innovation, workers, and the fight against climate change,' Neal said in a statement Monday. 'Scrapping funding for projects for innovators like Sublime Systems in Holyoke undercuts years of progress in decarbonizing heavy industry, and it jeopardizes good-paying jobs and economic development in communities that need it most.' The funding came through the Inflation Reduction Act, which was written in the House Ways and Means Committee that Neal chaired at the time. 'I can say unequivocally that this was not the intention of the bill; it was designed to accelerate the clean energy transition through innovation, not stall it,' Neal said. 'This isn't just about climate — it's about global competitiveness and leadership. Calling the move to shortsighted, Neal's statement called on the Trump administration to reinstate the grant. Sublime already had a deal to sell 623,000 tons of cement products to Microsoft over six to nine years. Previously, Neal said he expected the climate provisions of the Inflation Reduction Act to survive because many of the projects are in Republican-leaning southern states where GOP congress members would fight for them. Elon Musk, the Budget, and the Coming Labor Crisis
Other than the president himself, no one has had a greater impact on the first months of the new Trump administration than Elon Musk. Not only was Musks support critical in getting Donald Trump elected, but his empathy-free approach at the newly formed Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) made headlines that dominated news cycles while helping flood the zone with contentious and newsworthy actions designed to overwhelm an already exhausted public. Even after departing his government role, Muskcontinued - in rather spectacular fashion -exerting outsized influence on American politics. His incendiary opposition to the administrations "big beautiful" budget bill significantly complicates the path for congressional Republicans eager to prove their loyalty to the president. Until Musks spectacular split with the president, support for the worlds richest man broke almost entirely along partisan lines. For Republicans, he was lauded for a willingness to tackle the difficult and thankless task of taking on an entrenched bureaucracy. For Democrats, he was an oligarch looking to use his government role to enrich himself while callously demeaning civil servants. But there was always more nuance to what the worlds richest man was doing in Washington. While Elons DOGE efforts were often ham-handed, his opposition to the Republicans expensive budget bill reinforces the belief that he genuinely wants to help the government become more effective stewards of taxpayer dollars. Musks detractors have suggested his efforts were entirely self-serving, an attempt to curry favor with Trump to benefit all the companies in his orbit. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, for instance, recently released a report outlining as many as 130 instances where Musk "potentially" used his government role and proximity to Trump to enrich himself. But there was less to this critique than meets the eye. A close reading of Warrens report reveals that most of the items listed are related to things that might benefit Musk and his companies in the future. They were speculative benefits, in other words. Moreover, Musk swiftly eroded the goodwill he had accumulated with the president, likely eliminating those speculative benefits while simultaneously reinforcing the view that his approach to DOGE was principled, regardless of its effectiveness. In raw dollar terms, no one has sacrificed more financially to serve in the U.S. government. From the time of Trumps inauguration to April 22, the date Elon Musk announced in a Tesla analyst call that he would be returning to the automaker, Tesla stock fell by more than 45%. In the process, it erased more than $80 billion from Musks net worth - an amount that, by some analysts estimates, exceeds the net savings from the DOGE efforts. Yes, a few of Musks other businesses may have benefited from his government service, but the magnitude of any such gains is far less than the loss he suffered on Tesla stock. While more than half of those paper losses have been recovered since Musk signaled a return to his company, its not clear Teslas fortunes in the auto business will ever rebound. Teslas impact on Musks net worth is, however, a less relevant issue than what the company is signaling about the direction of American life. Despite single-handedly transforming the automobile industry, Teslas dominance in the electric vehicle space is now gone. So, why does the company still command a trillion-dollar valuation in the equity markets? A simple analysis of its stock suggests its value is not about its car business. That realization is a window into the future. As of the end of May, Teslas market capitalization exceeded $1.1 trillion - more than the value of the next nine auto companies combined. This is despite the fact that Tesla sells fewer cars than all but three of those companies. With a brand in free fall, declining sales and profitability, and rising competition from Chinese manufacturer BYD, it would be hard to argue that Teslas auto business should trade at a premium to other manufacturers. Assuming Teslas auto business is worth roughly the same amount as Mercedes Benz, General Motors, or BMW (all companies with unit sales at least 30% greater than Teslas and lacking Teslas significant brand issues), the selling of cars would account for a paltry 5% of Teslas implied value. Solar City, on the other hand, could be worth as much as twice its rival First Solar, given its relative size. Assuming thats correct, another $30 billion or 3% of Teslas valuation is explained by the worth of Teslas solar power and energy storage division. Even adding in the $24 billion of net cash Tesla has on its balance sheet, we have a company worth between $100 and $110 billion - one-tenth of what the market says Tesla is worth. So, why has the market rewarded Tesla with a valuation thats roughly 10 times the sum of its operating businesses? What do investors see in Tesla that they dont see in other similar companies? The answer would seem to be Musks investment in future technologies, most notably humanoid robots (Musk says hes going to sell a million devices at $30,000 a piece by 2030 and is positing a future where there is one humanoid robot for every person on the planet) - not to mention self-driving vehicles. In short, 90% of Teslas valuation is about one thing - eliminating jobs currently held by Americans. This isnt a future entirely inspired by Musks vision alone. Dozens of major companies are charting a course in this direction. In some ways, its a natural evolution of a number of technological advances in material science, artificial intelligence, energy storage and management, and sensors and perception. So, while Musk has been a lightning rod for all sorts of criticism and approbation, our leaders would be wise to examine what his company is telling us about the future - and legislate appropriately. From a policy standpoint, the questions that need to be answered are obvious. How will Americans feed themselves and their families when the job they depend upon is being done by a machine? How will the job destruction from these technological advances affect tax receipts, which are overly dependent on income taxes? How will Americans find fulfillment in life without work? How can we best share the benefits of this fourth industrial revolution to ensure they arent overly concentrated in a few hands? Policymakers failed to realize the impact of early automation and offshoring on average Americans, leading to significant income and wealth concentration. They cant make the same mistake again. Our leaders ushered in an era of globalization, during which imports as a percentage of GDP increased by three times from 1970 to the present. We now have $4 trillion of imports flooding our shelves, giving Americans access to low-cost electronics, clothing, and other consumer goods. While average Americans benefited from these price reductions, as a country, we largely overlooked those Americans who lost their jobs as a result of these import gains. In fact, weve never spent more than a billion dollars annually on trade adjustment assistance, 4,000 times less than the imports we have coming on shore every year. Compounding the mistakes of globalization by neglecting the implications of whats about to come will lead to an even more alienated and divided electorate. America wont survive the outcome of that policy failure.
