Peaceful protest announced for Katie Hopkins Edinburgh gig

The Nationala day ago

Stand Up To Racism (SUTR) Edinburgh have invited those who wish to join their peaceful protest 'against the airing of obnoxious views' to attend the BMC Social Club in the capital, where Hopkins is set to perform a comedy gig on June 19.
Hopkins, a former columnist for the Mail Online, The Sun and Canadian far-right website The Rebel Media, has garnered continued criticism for her extremist views on the disabled, migrants and Muslims since her appearance on The Apprentice in 2005.

Q Manivannan, the Scottish Greens candidate for the upcoming Fountainbridge-Craiglockhart byelection, said: 'Our country is built upon care, hospitality, and tolerance. Not the hate that Katie Hopkins brings, mocking disabled people, calling for a racist 'final solution', and fat-shaming.
'Her hate is recognised worldwide with her readers in Exeter voting to dump her, the likes of Piers Morgan calling her 'despicable', being held guilty of libel in a court of law, being deported from Australia, and impressing the world with her life of distrust.
'Scotland rejects such hate and racism. It has no room in our local communities."

Steve West, an independent socialist candidate for the byelection, added: "I share Stand Up To Racism's disgust that the BMC Club is hosting the racist, so-called comedian Katie Hopkins, who has also insulted disabled people.
'The club needs to be given a clear message that this is unacceptable. Edinburgh has a proud record of inclusivity and we need to keep it that way."
SUTR recently held a successful counter-demo to the 'Great British National Strike' and have garnered the support of major trade union organisations, as well as several Scottish public figures like Frankie Boyle, Humza Yousaf and Aamer Anwar.

Council workers to be balloted on new pay offer amid threat of strikes

The union said it will recommend staff accept the offer. Unison, which represents 80,000 workers across Scotland's 32 councils, began balloting members on strike action last month after local authority staff were offered a 3% pay rise. The union said the ballot amounted to the biggest vote of its kind in years and was held after 92% of members indicated they would support industrial action. Unison Scotland's head of local government, David O'Connor, said: 'The threat of possible strikes by council employees has forced Cosla back to the table. 'But it should not have taken the possibility of staff walkouts closing services to get Cosla and the Scottish Government to listen to the workforce. 'Local authority workers were due a pay rise in April. Despite the delay, this is a sensible offer. 'The union will be putting the new amount to council staff over next few weeks, recommending that they accept.' Cosla has been approached for comment.

Reform UK claim 11,000 Scottish members in challenge to Labour

On Friday, Reform UK said it had hit the 'hugely significant' milestone and challenged other parties to reveal their membership numbers. The SNP had 58,940 members as of December 31, 2024, meaning they are still by far Scotland's largest party. Scottish Labour numbers are not routinely published, but in 2021 the Daily Record reported that they had 16,467. Farage's party called on Scottish Labour, and all other parties, to publish their membership figures 'in the interest of transparency'. Scottish Labour said they would not give a running update but a spokesperson confirmed they had more members than the 11,000 claimed by Reform. In April 2023, the Greens said they had 7646 members – but reported a 'surge' in membership the following year without giving details. In September 2024, the Scottish Tory leadership election revealed that the party had 6941 members. At the time, reports said this meant the Alba Party had more members, with their accounts reporting 7507.
