Kneecap message at Welsh independence march prompts Plaid criticism
Plaid Cymru has been criticised for attending a Welsh independence rally which included a message of support by a member of Irish Republican rap group Kneecap.The event saw thousands of people march through Barry, Vale of Glamorgan, on Saturday.On Sunday it emerged footage of a Kneecap gig in 2023 allegedly calling for the death of British MPs is currently being assessed by counter-terrorism police.Former Welsh Conservative leader Andrew RT Davies said Plaid had stayed "silent" and accused the band, who he referred to as supporters of the party, of spreading "bile".Plaid said the decision to run the video was a question for the organisers of the rally.
Yes Cymru, one of the organisers, said they were unaware of any potential police investigation at the time of the rally.
In a short video played at Saturday's independence rally, DJ Provai from Kneecap said he was sending a message of support for Welsh independence and wished the march well.He finished by saying: "I hope independence comes soon, Cymru Rydd (Free Wales)."After the event, it emerged The Metropolitan police was assessing a video taken at a Kneecap concert in 2024 in which they are accused of expressing support for Hamas and Hezbollah, which is a criminal offence.The Met also said it was aware of another video from an event in November 2023 where a band member is alleged to have said: "The only good Tory is a dead Tory. Kill your local MP."Police said they were made aware of the videos on 22 April.On Sunday, former Welsh Conservative leader Davies criticised Plaid Cymru's attendance at Saturday's rally on X, saying: "Plaid Cymru nationalist politicians are quick to cry 'hate' when it suits them, but stay silent when it's their own supporters spreading bile."Davies said Kneecap were "celebrated" at the Barry march, and described Plaid Cymru leader Rhun ap Iorwerth and others of "applauding" an event featuring a band accused of calling for MPs to be killed."This is the real face of Welsh nationalism: poison, division, and an ideology that will tear our nation apart," Davies said. Plaid Cymru economy spokesperson Luke Fletcher attended the rally in Barry on Saturday and said the decision to run the video was a question for the organisers of the march.Asked what it said for Plaid Cymru given that party figures attended, he said the main aim of the march was to push for an independent Wales.Fletcher described the alleged comments by Kneecap as "worrying" and said "on a personal level" they made him "uncomfortable".
YesCymru and All Under One Banner Cymru, who organised the march, said the march was a "joyous, family-friendly occasion, attended by people of all ages from across Wales and beyond"."The atmosphere was positive and celebratory throughout, reflecting the peaceful and inclusive spirit of the campaign for Welsh independence," they said.They added "the BBC first reported on the investigation on Sunday, the day after our event and of course we cannot comment on any police investigation involving the musical group".Last week, Sharon Osbourne called for the west Belfast rap group's US work visas to be revoked after Kneecap performed at Coachella and ended their set with pro-Palestinian messages.Responding to recent criticism of their support for the people of Palestine, Kneecap, made up of Liam Og Ó Hannaidh, Naoise Ó Caireallain and JJ Ó Dochartaigh, said on social media they had "faced a co-ordinated smear campaign".They said they had previously "called out" the conflict in Gaza and also appeared to suggest they would be taking legal action against the "malicious efforts".Kneecap said: "For over a year, we have used our shows to call out the British and Irish governments' complicity in war crimes."The trio have been asked to comment on the alleged comments regarding British MPs.

Gatwick-bound plane carrying 53 British nationals crashes in India

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has stood up a crisis team in India and the UK, Foreign Secretary David Lammy said. 'At this moment, our primary focus is on supporting all the affected people and their families. He added: 'An emergency centre has been activated and support team have been set up for families seeking information.' Mr Kidwai said there were 232 passengers and 12 crew members onboard. It is the first crash involving a Boeing 787 aircraft, according to the Aviation Safety Network database. Flight tracking website Flightradar24 posted on social media platform X: 'We are following reports of a crash of Air India flight #AI171 from Ahmedabad to London. 'We received the last signal from the aircraft at 08:08:51 UTC (shortly before 9.09am BST), just seconds after take off. 'The aircraft involved is a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner with registration VT-ANB.' It added the signal from the aircraft was lost 'less than a minute after take-off'. Flightradar24 said flight tracking data shows after taking off, the plane reached a maximum altitude of 625ft, which is about 425ft above the airport. It then started to descend at a rate of 475 feet per minute. Air India was acquired by Tata Group from the Indian government in January 2022 after racking up billions of pounds of losses. The airline's UK operations are at Birmingham, Gatwick and Heathrow, with routes to a number of Indian cities such as Ahmedabad, Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru. Recent analysis by the PA news agency found it was the worst airline for delays to flights from UK airports last year, with planes taking off by an average of more than 45 minutes later than scheduled. The airline has gained a poor reputation for delays and cancellations in recent years, partly caused by a lack of funds to purchase spare aircraft parts, which led to some of its fleet being grounded. 'Magor should be priority of five new stations near Newport'
Chancellor Rachel Reeves announced nearly half a billion pounds will be made available, over 10 years, for rail improvements in Wales as part of the UK Government's spending review. Labour has said that will allow the Welsh Government to put forward detailed plans for five new stations in South East Wales at Cardiff East, Newport West, Somerton, Llanwern, and Magor and Undy. The Magor and Undy station was first proposed by local campaigners, in 2013, as a 'walkway station' intended to be easily accessible to local commuters on foot and to take the strain off the congested M4 around Newport. The idea was later incorporated into the Burn Commission which proposed the five new stations when it was tasked with finding alternatives to take the strain off the motorway when a relief road was ruled out in 2019. Retired railway man Ted Hand, one of the founders of the Magor Action Group on Rail, or MAGOR, that proposed and campaigned for a new station has welcomed the funding announcement. But he said decision makers still need to be persuaded to give the Magor station, which he said could be delivered before any of the others, priority status. He said: 'It's very good news. It's capital expenditure committed now it is a matter that the battle is perhaps won now we need get on with the war and get Magor done to use Boris Johnson's expression.' Mr Hand said Magor has the rail tracks and space required which could allow a simple station to be put in place at speed. He said the Burns Commission had acknowledged this but had drawn up it own 'more grandiose' designs. 'Magor could be started tomorrow as it's not dependent on upgrading the relief line,' said Mr Hand: 'The spades could go in the ground tomorrow. 'It is very, very welcome capital expenditure is committed they now need to deliver and obviously we want to see Magor done first as it is the easiest to do.' The announcement has also been welcomed across the political divide. Labour's John Griffiths, Member of Senedd for Newport East, said: 'I have heard from constituents again and again that new train stations are needed along the M4 corridor. 'I welcome the news that the Welsh Labour Government, working with the UK Government, will now put forward detailed plans for not one, but two new stations in Newport East, and another one in Magor and Undy.' Laura Anne Jones Conservative MS for South Wales East said: 'The confirmation of a new station for Magor represents a hard fought victory for the tireless campaigners who have worked incredible hard for many years.' She added: 'It is clear that this new station will be transformative for Monmouthshire and the wider South East Wales region.' In the Commons Ms Reeves said the £445 million investment in railways was for schemes including the 'Cardiff West junction'.

UK foreign minister Lammy 'deeply saddened' by India plane crash
LONDON, June 12 (Reuters) - British foreign minister David Lammy said he was deeply saddened by news of a plane crash in India, and that Britain was now working with Indian authorities. "Deeply saddened by news of a devastating plane crash in Ahmedabad, India," Lammy said on X. "My thoughts are with all those affected. The UK is working with local authorities in India to urgently establish the facts and provide support." Speaking in parliament later on, Lammy said Britain had activated a crisis team in both India's capital, New Delhi, and in London.
