Sustainability-related jobs signal ESG growth
The green building industry, as a sunrise industry in China, has become so popular that ESG (environmental, social and governance)-related positions are springing up like mushrooms after rain.
With demand in the green building field skyrocketing, occupations like green building consultants, sustainable construction managers, sustainable trainers in human resources, sustainable trainers in legal compliance department, green building engineers, and carbon neutrality business analysts are vying for attention.
If you typed "green building" to search jobs under the real estate category in Beijing on Zhaopin.com, one of China's major recruitment portals, on May 12, the listing showed that there were 232 jobs available.
The one with the highest monthly salary is senior green building engineer, with monthly salaries ranging from 29,000 yuan ($4,035) to 40,000 yuan. Green building consultant is also a hot position, with monthly salaries ranging from 5,000 yuan to 10,000 yuan.
They offer professional consulting, certification, and management services in every link, including the selection of building materials, construction techniques, energy consumption component testing and certification, emission control, facility updates, equipment management, and low-carbon management in the construction and usage processes.
"As the era of carbon constraints fully arrives, carbon emissions may have a more direct impact on asset performance. In the field of commercial real estate, green buildings have become a new norm. Green building consultants have been playing a critical role in the process of promoting the green transition of buildings," said Alan Li, president of CBRE China, a global commercial real estate services and investment firm.
Speaking of the reason why ESG-related positions are gaining popularity, Li noted that in addition to the widely recognised advantages of reducing operating expenses and being offered green financial support, the advantages of green buildings in terms of rental income are also very much evident.
According to the latest survey from CBRE, one-fifth of tenants said that they will consider applying for a rental discount if a building does not have a green certification.
At present, investors' allocation of ESG assets has shown a rapidly increasing trend. Latest statistics from CBRE showed that 91 percent of the respondents have or plan to include ESG into their investment decisions, while 71 percent of the investors are willing to offer a certain premium on ESG assets.
Then, how can a green building consultant help an occupier or landlord in decarbonization?
The report outlines that for occupiers, a green building consultant helps them in improving energy efficiency, decarbonising their energy chain by transitioning to renewable energy, optimising their workplace strategy planning, decarbonising the supply chain, as well as exploring carbon offset opportunities.
For landlords, on the other hand, green building consultants help them in using intelligent building systems and adopting green leases, which enables clarifying the obligations and rights of landlords and occupiers in leasing terms where both parties can share the costs and benefits of green retrofitting and operation and participate more actively in decarbonization.
Li noted that with the development of the green building industry, in the next three to five years, more demand is expected to emerge.
For industry practitioners, they are advised to grasp basic knowledge of green building, including commercial real estate carbon footprint, to be familiar with national and local policy standards and energy-saving transformation technologies and promotion lists, and understand green financial instruments.
As an international property consultancy, CBRE manages more than 46,500 buildings around the world. So far, CBRE has provided green building certification services to more than 20 million square meters of properties on the Chinese mainland, data from the company showed. - China Daily/ANN

BYD manager calls EV price war it helped spark unsustainable
BYD Co. sees China's electric vehicle price war as unsustainable, according to a senior company executive, who stopped short of saying the country's largest EV maker would scale back the aggressive discounting it helped trigger. 'It's very extreme, tough competition,' Executive Vice President Stella Li said in an interview with Bloomberg News in London. 'No, it's not sustainable,' she added, noting that consolidation across the sector is likely as the market matures. The comments highlight mounting strain within China's overheated EV market, where a flood of new entrants and deep price cuts — many led by BYD — have eroded margins and triggered rare government intervention. While BYD has gained market share, the fallout is growing, with investors, regulators and rivals all pushing for a reset. Beijing summoned industry leaders for talks earlier this month, telling EV makers not to sell cars below cost or offer unreasonable price cuts. The EV price war has weighed heavily on automaker shares, with BYD losing around $22 billion in market capitalization since peaking in late May. Still, the company is seen as a likely long-term winner if smaller and mid-sized rivals are squeezed out, allowing BYD to grow its dominant market share. Li said BYD plans to continue investing aggressively outside China, with a particular focus on Europe. The company expects to spend as much as $20 billion in the region over the coming years, she said. BYD's market share is rising rapidly in key European countries including Germany, the UK and Italy, helped by a fast-expanding dealer network and competitively priced offerings—especially plug-in hybrids. Read more: Chinese EVs Grab Biggest Market Share in Europe in Nine Months The company recently overtook rival Tesla Inc. in Europe, a shift attributed in part to BYD offering a wider lineup of models. It currently sells around nine to ten vehicles in the region, compared to Tesla's four. Li also said that BYD has no immediate plans to partner with a European automaker, a strategy that local rivals Xpeng Inc. and Zhejiang Leapmotor Technology Co. have embraced. 'But the door is open,' she said. Li added that BYD is also investing heavily in after-sales service, and expects its European market share to climb further as more customers become familiar with the company's technology and support. 'If we decide to do something, we put all our resources behind it,' she said. 'We want to make sure it's successful in the long run.' –BLOOMBERG

TCL eyes Malaysia for new manufacturing base as South-East Asia sales soar
Li: The Malaysian market is among the most competitive and developed in Asean, and it has one of the highest purchasing powers. KUALA LUMPUR: TCL, a leading global technology brand, is exploring the possibility of setting up a manufacturing base in Malaysia, as part of its strategy to deepen its presence in South-East Asia and localise its global operations. Speaking during a visit to Malaysia, TCL founder and chairman Li Dongsheng said the company had dispatched project teams multiple times in the past six months to assess local opportunities. 'We are currently studying the possibility of setting up a manufacturing base in Malaysia,' Li told StarBiz in a language exclusive interview. 'The Malaysian market is among the most competitive and developed in Asean, and it has one of the highest purchasing powers. Products made here can serve not just local consumers, but also be re-exported to other global markets.' TCL has already established more than 10 production bases worldwide over the past two decades, including in Vietnam, Indonesia and Mexico, as part of its broader strategy to internationalise operations. Li said its first overseas foray within this region began in Vietnam in 1999. Last year, TCL's revenue from South-East Asia surged by 30%. In the Malaysian market alone, the total revenue across all categories in 2024 saw a year-over-year increase of 467%. After more than 40 years of transformation, TCL, through TCL Industries and TCL Technology, is now focusing on three core industries: consumer electronics, display technology, and clean energy. From a global perspective, the group earned over RM82.3bil in overseas revenue last year, making up almost half its total revenue of about RM184.9bil. 'We have transformed our business model to move beyond just exporting products to building localised industrial chains and supply networks,' said Li. 'This creates employment, tax revenue, and stronger partnerships in host countries.' In Malaysia, TCL already operates a research and development (R&D) centre focused on high-end products, which also serves its global customer base. 'This is also one of the reasons for my visit—to look into expanding our production and manufacturing footprint here,' he added. Li said TCL is also leveraging its partnership with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to boost its global brand image. As an official worldwide Olympic and Paralympic partner representing the home audiovisual equipment and home appliances category, he said TCL will supply smart and green energy-saving products—including display panels, air conditioners and AR glasses—for use in Olympic venues. Through these intelligent products, the company aspires to present an extraordinary experience for both the athletes and global audiences, allowing billions of viewers worldwide to immerse themselves in the breathtaking audiovisual feast of the Olympic event. 'This collaboration is a major milestone,' said Li. 'It will allow us to expand the global visibility of our smart technologies and reinforce our brand through one of the most recognised platforms in the world. As a leading global technology brand with a sports gene and humanistic care, TCL consistently upholds the brand spirit of 'Inspire Greatness', which perfectly aligns with the Olympic ideal of pursuing excellence.' Following on from the 'Inspire Greatness' activation, TCL also expanded its partnership with Arsenal in May this year, becoming the club's Official Global Consumer Electronics Partner. Looking ahead, Li expressed confidence in TCL's ability to maintain strong momentum in Southeast Asia. 'Our growth in Malaysia will continue at a very high level. I hope we can launch our first manufacturing project in Malaysia within this year.' "To put it simply, leading a company requires keeping up with the times,' he said. 'You must constantly adapt, learn, and grow. That's the only way to build a company that can thrive in a fast-changing world.' For more information about TCL:

KWAP, MFF INK MOU TO ACCELERATE BIODIVERSITY, NET ZERO GOALS
KUALA LUMPUR: The Retirement Fund Inc (KWAP) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) yesterday with the Malaysia Forest Fund (MFF) aimed at advancing Malaysia's sustainability agenda through forest-based solutions. The partnership is a step in supporting Malaysia's transition to a net-zero economy and reinforces KWAP's commitment to achieve Net Zero Portfolio by 2050, a key element of its broader environmental, social and governance (ESG) strategy. The signing ceremony, held in conjunction with the KWAP Inspire Satellite 2025 event and witnessed by Secretary General of the Treasury and KWAP's chairman Datuk Johan Mahmood Merican, marks the beginning of a collaboration to advance forest conservation and nature-based solutions (NBS). This MoU also supports the development of credible and scalable national carbon credits to help KWAP's investee companies meet their decarbonisation goals. KWAP chief executive officer (CEO) Datuk Nik Amlizan Mohamed said, 'The collaboration with MFF will be a game-changer for both KWAP and Malaysia's broader sustainability efforts. 'As a responsible institutional investor, KWAP is committed to driving stewardship through impactful actions and pursuing purpose beyond returns. 'By contributing to the development of a credible, nationally anchored carbon ecosystem, we aim to empower our investee companies with the tools they need to meet their net-zero commitment while also making significant contributions to Malaysia's climate and biodiversity goals.' The MoU features the Forest Conservation Certificate (FCC) to support domestic conservation initiatives, focusing on preserving Malaysia's vital biodiversity and ecosystems. MFF will also oversee development of the Forest Carbon Offset (FCO), a market-based mechanism that allows companies to offset their emissions through investments in forest conservation projects that reduce, remove and avoid carbon emissions. Through this MoU, KWAP has become a participant in the National Forest Carbon Offset (FCO) technical working group (TWG), established by MFF. The group aims to ensure the needs of institutional investors – including the nuances of ESG investing, are integrated into the framework, where relevant. This participation will also help align FCO standards with international carbon market requirements and best practices. These initiatives, aligned with Malaysia's National Climate Change Policy 2.0, aim to drive knowledge-sharing and capacity-building efforts to enhance participants' skills in forest management and carbon offsetting. This includes supporting the achievement of targets such as a 45% reduction in carbon intensity by 2030 and Net Zero GHG Emissions by 2050, as well as Malaysia's commitment to maintaining at least 50% forest and tree cover. MFF CEO Datuk Shah Redza Hussein said, 'This collaboration with KWAP is a pivotal step in our mission to strengthen Malaysia's carbon market, achieving the nation's sustainability targets and accelerating meaningful climate action. 'By leveraging nature-based solutions, particularly through the Forest Conservation Certificate and the upcoming Forest Carbon Offset, we are creating a pathway for businesses towards achieving net-zero goals while supporting forest conservation, aligning with national climate commitments. 'Our work with KWAP and other stakeholders will drive long-term environmental and economic benefits, not only for Malaysia but for the global community as we strive towards a greener and more resilient future.' The collaboration puts KWAP as a sustainability thought leader, enhancing its reputation in the financial sector while contributing valuable insights to both domestic and international markets. By exploring potential integration of nature-based solutions into its ESG investment and non-investment strategies, KWAP reinforces its role in advancing Malaysia's decarbonisation agenda and setting a strong example for other institutional investors. KWAP and MFF will continue to explore opportunities to enhance the Forest Carbon Offset system and other potential nature-based solutions initiatives, ensuring they become key drivers for sustainable development in Malaysia. The partnership will also support ongoing efforts to build local capacity for biodiversity and forestry management, ensuring that the benefits of the projects reach the communities directly involved. KWAP also build on its MFF collaboration by engaging with interested parties to drive collective action, with the hopes of exploring potential collaborations with fellow GLICs and relevant organisations, in line with the Ministry of Finance's Government-linked Enterprise Activation and Reform Programme (GEAR-uP) initiative, aimed at synergising efforts across Government-linked Entities for national impact. This collaboration represents a critical next step in KWAP's broader commitment to empowering partnerships that drive collective action for sustainability, as outlined in its Sustainability Pledge 2, 'Empower Partnerships for Collective Action.' By joining forces with MFF and other stakeholders, KWAP helps preserve Malaysia's forests and the communities that depend on them for future generations.
