Switzerland Moves to Ban Disposable Vapes

Switzerland is set to introduce a nationwide ban on disposable e-cigarettes after the upper chamber of Parliament voted in favor of the measure on Wednesday.
The move reflects growing concern over youth vaping and environmental harm linked to single-use devices.
The government is now required to draft legislation to formally enact the ban. Notably, the decision will not affect rechargeable vaping devices, which will remain legal under the forthcoming regulations.
Disposable vapes, often brightly coloured and flavoured like candy floss or gummy bears, have gained immense popularity among young people in Switzerland. Lawmakers pointed out that these products are not only highly addictive but also harmful to the environment due to their hazardous chemical and plastic components.
During the parliamentary session, one member
highlighted
alarming reports from school teachers who described 12-year-old students struggling to wait until break time to take a puff from their e-cigarettes.
Disposable e-cigarettes first entered the Swiss market in 2020, and imports have been increasing by nearly 30% annually.
While such products remain legally available in Germany, the European Union is preparing a region-wide ban expected to take effect by the end of 2026. The United Kingdom has already implemented a ban on disposable vapes, positioning itself at the forefront of regulatory action in Europe.

UN Member States to Adopt Voluntary Political Declaration to Solve Marine Crisis
Rana Atef More than 2,000 scientists and advocates from at least 100 countries participated in the One Ocean Science Congress, dedicated to the increasing marine crisis. 'The ocean is suffering at the cause of humanity,' said the Mayor of Nice, Christian Estrosi, who spoke at the opening ceremony on Tuesday. She added, 'Either we save our oceans or the entire race will pay.' Rising sea temperatures due to global warming, ocean acidification, plastic pollution, and offshore oil and gas developments are some of the threats plaguing the ocean. 'Sound research shows global human health is intrinsically linked to a healthy ocean,' said Peter Thomson, the United Nations secretary-general's special envoy for the ocean. The ocean greatly contributes to producing more than half of the oxygen humans breathe, in addition to balancing Earth temperatures by absorbing excess heat and carbon dioxide. 3 billion people depend on the ocean for their daily activities, according to the United Nations. But, at the congress's opening ceremony, Thomson said, 'the ocean's health is currently, measurably in decline.' Now is the time to chart a new future for the ocean, he said. 'Faith has been placed upon this congress to serve as the scientific pillar of the U.N. Ocean Conference,' said Thomson. He added: 'We're expecting that the scientifically compiled conclusions of this congress will inform the leaders and the representatives of governments and civil society who will be attending the conference.' Palestinian Foreign Ministry Welcomes Upgrading Membership to "Observer State" in ILO
Taarek Refaat The Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates welcomed the historic decision adopted by the International Labor Organization (ILO) to upgrade Palestine's membership from "national liberation movement" to "non-member observer state" in the organization, despite the Israeli occupation's attempts to obstruct its adoption. The ministry stated, in a statement carried by the Palestinian News Agency (WAFA) on Friday, that the decision was adopted after years of diplomatic efforts by the ministry and the Permanent Mission of the State of Palestine to the United Nations in Geneva, in cooperation and coordination with relevant authorities. The voting results were a clear majority of 386 votes in favor, 15 against, and 42 abstentions. The Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicated that this resolution grants Palestine expanded observer rights in the International Labour Organization (ILO) and upgrades its status to "non-member observer state," in line with its status in the United Nations and UN General Assembly Resolution ES-10/23 of May 2024. This resolution balances Palestine's status in the ILO with its membership in other agencies such as UNESCO and the World Health Organization. The resolution is based on the recommendation of the ILO Governing Body, adopted during its 352nd session in November 2024, which called for strengthening the status and participation of the State of Palestine in the organization's work, including attendance at Governing Body meetings, regional conferences, and technical committees. The Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates appreciated the positions of the countries that expressed their clear support for this resolution, calling on the countries that did not support the resolution and isolated themselves with their negative votes to review their positions and join the moral majority consistent with international law. It emphasized that this step is important to preserve the rights of the Palestinian people, especially in light of the crimes committed by Israel, the illegal occupying power, since the Nakba in 1948.
