Top seed Auburn claw back to join MSU, Tennessee and Houston in Elite Eight
Freshman Tahaad Pettiford and senior Denver Jones turned in dazzling performances when it mattered most, rallying top-seeded Auburn to a 78-65 victory over Michigan in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament on Friday night.
The Tigers (31-5) wiped out a nine-point deficit in the second half, outscoring No. 5 seed Michigan 39-17 over the final 12 and a half minutes to advance to the Elite Eight for only the third time in school history. They also became the fourth Southeastern Conference team to reach a regional final, with the SEC joining the Atlantic Coast Conference (2016) and Big East (2009) as the only leagues to do that.
Auburn will face Michigan State in the South Region final on Sunday, with a trip to the Final Four on the line. The Spartans held off Mississippi 73-70 in the first game of the night in Atlanta.
Johni Broome scored 22 points to go along with 16 rebounds, but it was Pettiford and Jones who took control with Auburn's season on the brink.
The Wolverines (27-10) built their biggest lead, 49-38, and seemed headed for their most improbable performance yet in a remarkable comeback season under first-year coach Dusty May
Jace Richardson scored 24 points and Michigan State surged past Mississippi in the second half for a victory in the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16.
Ole Miss (24-12) was denied in its bid for its first Elite Eight appearance despite leading by 10 points in the first half and by nine in the second half.
Michigan State (30-6), the South Region's No 2 seed, rallied to keep alive coach Tom Izzo's bid for his ninth Final Four and second national championship. The Spartans will play No 1 seed Auburn on Sunday.
Izzo, in his 16th Sweet 16, earned his 59th NCAA Tournament win, breaking a tie with Jim Boeheim of Syracuse for fourth all-time.
Zakai Zeigler had 18 points and 10 assists, and Tennessee outhustled and outplayed Kentucky on both ends of the court in a victory that sent the Volunteers to a second consecutive Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament.
The second-seeded Vols (30-7) beat their border rival in the first all-Southeastern Conference Sweet 16 matchup since 1986 and will play Sunday against Houston in the Midwest Region final.
Chaz Lanier added 17 points and Jordan Gainey had 16 for the Vols, who lost twice to Kentucky in the regular season but prevailed on a much bigger stage this time.
No one enjoyed the show at Lucas Oil Stadium more than Peyton Manning, who was back in the town where he spent 13 years and won a Super Bowl with the Indianapolis Colts. The Vols' most famous sports alum was in a bright orange ballcap seated behind the bench as Tennessee ran off with a no-doubt victory in the 'House Peyton Built'.
Lamont Butler scored 18 points to lead first-year coach Mark Pope's third-seeded Wildcats (24-12), who were held 20 points under their season scoring average. Their 65 points matched their fewest in a game this season.
Milos Uzan soared for an uncontested layup on a beautifully executed inbound play with 0.9 seconds left, and No 1 seed Houston survived a late collapse to beat fourth-seeded Purdue in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.
Houston led 56-46 with just under eight minutes remaining but made only one field goal from there until Uzan's tiebreaking bucket. He inbounded the ball from the baseline to Joseph Tugler, who threw a bounce pass back to Uzan, and the 6ft 4in junior took it to the rim.
Houston, the Big 12 regular-season and tournament champion, became the fourth No 1 seed to reach the Elite Eight. The Cougars haven't lost since 1 February and won this time at Lucas Oil Stadium, where their 2021 tourney run ended with a loss in the Final Four to eventual national champion Baylor.
Uzan scored 22 points and Emanuel Sharp had 17 as Houston survived an off night from leading scorer LJ Cryer, who finished with five points on 2-of-13 shooting.
Fletcher Loyer scored 16 points, Trey Kaufman-Renn had 14 and Big Ten player of the year Braden Smith added seven points and 15 assists to lead Purdue (24-12). Smith assisted on all 11 second-half baskets for last year's national runner-up, which played in front of a friendly crowd about an hour's drive from its campus in West Lafayette.

Baller League UK predictions: Odds and betting preview plus £30 in free bets
THE Final Four contest for the inaugural Baller League UK crown this Thursday. We've taken a look ahead to the indoor action to see if we can pick out the best tips and odds for the big finale. Baller League UK - Final four After 11 grueling gamedays of Baller League UK action, it all comes down to this for the final four. One of Deportrio, MVPs United, Yanited or SDS FC will be crowned the winners of the inaugural competition which has gripped social media. Some big names in the world of sport, entertainment, music and influencing have been involved and now we'll find out the winner. As table toppers after 11 gamedays, Deportrio are rightly the bookies favourites to claim victory on Thursday night - yet strangely go into their semi final with SDS FC as the underdogs, so work that one out. The team managed by Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Micah Richards have just gone off the boil in recent weeks with just one win in their last five, including a thumping 8-3 defeat from SDS FC last time out. They did however just manage to cling onto top spot on goal difference after winning seven of their 11 games and scoring 42 goals in the process, though need to get back to their early tournament form if they want to win this. Semi final opponents, SDS FC have won their last four games on the spin and haven't tasted defeat since gameday five to finish just three points off the top. In the other semi final, MVPs United - second to Deportrio on goal difference - take on AngryGinge's team Yanited having also both won 7 of their 11 games. The sides met only a couple of weeks ago on the gameday 9 fixture list, with the well-fancied Alisha Lehmann and Maya Jama's side MVPs United coming out 4-3 victors. But Yanited finished the league phase with comfortably the highest goal difference in the competition with +17 after the 11 games - with SDS FC (+12) the only side close. So to sum up, the bookmaker odds are close for both semi finals and the outright markets and it's no wonder why - this is anyone's competition! Baller League UK - Latest odds Semi final odds Deportrio vs SDS FC Deportrio 27/20 Draw 4/1 SDS FC 21/20 MVPs United vs Yanited MVPs United 6/5 Draw 4/1 Yanited 6/5 Outright odds Deportrio 15/8 Yanited 15/8 SDS FC 7/2 MVPs United 4/1 Baller League UK predictions Final Four winner SDS FC lost out to MVPs United on gameday three and started the competition with one win from five games. So it's been an almost upward curve from that moment on and they're an attractive price to win this after last week's heroics. That thumping win over Deportrio to get them here was a big moment and that momentum could well carry them through two more games. *18+. Min deposit requirement. Stewart Friesen wins thrilling triple-OT Truck Series race in Michigan
June 7 - Stewart Friesen hoisted his first trophy of the season in Saturday afternoon's triple overtime DQS Solutions & Staffing 250 at Michigan International Speedway - a NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race that didn't want to end, ultimately featuring 24 extra laps. The victory snapped a 72-race winless streak for the popular Canadian driver Friesen who had not been among the race's frontrunners all day but was where he needed to be when it counted, collecting his first trophy since winning at Texas Motor Speedway back in 2022. His No. 52 Halmar Friesen Racing Toyota beat Grant Enfinger's Chevy by a slight .111-second - both drivers benefitting from a rash of late-race caution flags. With most drivers opting for the outside row on the final restart, Friesen was able to move up and take that inside position on the front row alongside Enfinger. The two of them dueled it out over the next two overtime laps to settle the trophy. Neither had a win coming into the race. "I don't know what to say, thank you to Chris Halmer and all these sponsors and all these race fans, I know there's a lot of Canadians and a lot of Americans,'' Friesen said as the crowd began a huge roar of approval for the 41-year-old Ontario native as he celebrated his fourth career win. While not a victory, the runner-up effort equaled a season-best (also at Las Vegas) for Enfinger and the CR7 Motorsports team. "I don't know,'' he said when asked if there was anything he possibly could have done differently. "We weren't as good as we thought we were in practice, but man, Jeff kept swinging stuff at it and got gutsy with both calls, the call to stay out and the call to come in. ... Feel like all in all, we executed to the best of our ability, but it just wasn't meant to be.'' ThorSport Racing's Luke Fenhaus, who won his first career pole position for the race, finished third, followed by his teammate, two-time series champion Ben Rhodes and Spire Motorsports' Corey LaJoie making only his sixth truck series start. The opening two stages of the event went caution-free except for the stage breaks, but the final stage featured seven caution flags. The overtime periods put a dramatic spin on the win. A big wreck on a restart with five laps remaining eliminated several of the day's strongest competitors - Ross Chastain, who was leading at the time and championship leader Corey Heim, who swept both stages and led 29 laps running top five most of the day. It all created a seemingly dream scenario for another of the race's best - NASCAR Cup Series regular and Michigan native, Carson Hocevar, who was trying to win his first national series race at his home track. He survived much of the late race melee only to get a penalty following the second overtime green flag for pulling out of line too early on the restart. He led a race-high 56 laps but ultimately finished 11th. Matt Crafton, Jake Garcia, Chandler Smith, rookie Andres Perez De Lara and Layne Riggs rounded out the top-10 in the first NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series race at the track since 2020. Actor Frankie Muniz finished 14th - his best finish since a 10th place in the Daytona season-opener. Despite his 18th place finish, Heim stretched out his championship lead and now holds a 133-point advantage over Chandler Smith. The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series takes a week off while the NASCAR Xfinity and Cup Series race in Mexico City next weekend. The trucks resume competition on June 20 in the Miller Tech Battery 200 at Pocono (Pa.) Raceway (5 p.m. ET, FS1, MRN, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio). Heim is the defending race winner.
