Tiger spotted in Chhattisgarh's Udanti Sitanadi Reserve
RAIPUR: A tiger was spotted in trap cameras on 24 May in Chhattisgarh's Udanti Sitanadi Tiger Reserve (USTR) during the ongoing wildlife census.
The team had been tracking the tiger's movement since April, when its pugmarks were first sighted in the Reserve.
USTR Deputy Director Varun Jain stated that the tiger's pictures will be sent to the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) Tiger Cell.
This is to establish the tiger's identity by matching its unique stripe pattern with the national database of tigers.
Earlier in October 2022, a tiger captured in USTR camera traps was identified as having travelled from Kawal Tiger Reserve, Telangana. 'We will get the details about the tiger from the NTCA's Tiger Cell after matching its stripe pattern, which is unique to each individual,' Jain said.
Jain added that current census data and trap camera images show a significant increase in the Reserve's herbivore population. He also noted that the construction of new ponds and soil-moisture conservation efforts in the Reserve might be reasons for the tiger remaining there during summer.
The tracking team is working to identify the tiger's territory through sign surveys and GIS mapping. The USTR team is also alerting villagers and securing the Reserve to ensure a safe habitat for the tiger.

Separately, the Anti-Poaching Squad intercepted and arrested an accused for poaching a monitor lizard on the morning of 24 May. A thermal drone has been deployed for night surveillance. The team is monitoring the tiger's movement to prevent human-animal conflict and is fast-tracking compensation cases for cattle loss.
The team is also tracking three elephant herds, comprising around 30 elephants, and alerting villagers about their movement.

Bodies of woman, two sons found in Pune: family member held for murder
Two days after the bodies of a woman and her two children were found in a partially burnt condition near the Pune- Ahilyanagar Highway in Shirur taluka, the Pune Rural Police Saturday arrested her family member for allegedly murdering them. The woman identified as Swati Keshav Sonawane (25) and her sons Swaraj (2) and Viraj (1) were found murdered around 11 am on May 25 in Ranjangaon town. The arrested accused was identified as Gorakh Popat Bokhare (36), police said, adding that he was in a relationship with the woman. Police said Swati wanted to marry Gorakh, but he allegedly refused and killed her along with two sons. The accused was remanded in police custody till June 11 for further investigation. After the bodies were found on May 25, the initial probe and the autopsy revealed they were murdered before being set on fire to destroy the evidence. Accordingly, an FIR was lodged at the Ranjangaon MIDC police station under sections 103 (1), 238 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Police said on the front of the right hand of the woman, there was a tattoo of a heart shape followed by a heartbeat sign in the form of an ECG line, followed by words 'mom' and 'dad' in English. The right hand also had the words 'Jai Bhim' written in Marathi. On the back side of right hand there was a tattoo of the name 'Kartik' in Marathi, in addition to two heart signs with letters 'R' and 'S' written in those hearts and the name 'Rajratan' in English. Also, on her left hand there is a tattoo of a floral design. Seven police teams were formed to identify the deceased and their killer. There was no CCTV close to the spot where the bodies were found. But police checked videos from over 250 CCTVs from Wagholi in Pune to Rahuri in Ahilya Nagar district. Sandeep Singh Gill, Superintendent of Pune rural police, then formed 27 teams coordinated by inspector Avinash Shilimkar of local crime branch and inspector Mahadev Waghmode of Ranjangaon police station for probing this case. Information about missing persons cases was gathered from all districts and cities. Police then came across a missing woman report filed at Majalgaon police station in Beed district on May 9. Police said the description of the missing woman from Beed matched the body found at Ranjangaon. This led the police to identify the deceased woman as Swati Sonawane of Waghora village in Majalgaon, Beed. Investigation revealed that Swati had a dispute with her husband, who worked as a worker at a private place. She left her husband and went to her maternal house in Pune's Alandi along with her sons Swaraj and Viraj. Further probe revealed that Swati and her sons went along with her relative Gorakh Bokhare on a motorcycle around 9 pm on May 23 and then did not return. Police said Swati's parents working as labourers in Alandi were not aware of her location. Police then traced Gorakh, a native of Shrigonda in Ahilyanagar, currently residing at Saradwadi village in Shirur taluka. During interrogation, he allegedly admitted his involvement in the triple murder, police said. Probe revealed that Swati's sister is married to Gorakh's brother. Being family members, they knew each other. Police said when Swati and her husband had quarrels, Gorakh used to mediate and solve it. But in the meantime, Swati and Gorakh developed a relationship. Police said Swati asked Gorakh to marry her. But Gorakh was already married and had two children. So he refused to marry Swati and when she started insisting, he allegedly decided to kill her, police said. Accordingly, on May 23, he allegedly took Swati and her sons with him on a motorcycle from Alandi to Ranjangaon in the night hours. He allegedly murdered Swati and the two boys by strangulation, then stoned their faces and burnt their bodies with petrol for destroying evidence, stated a press release issued on Saturday. 'Gorakh worked as a driver on a private vehicle. He hails from Ahilyanagar, but had shifted to Shirur a few years before,' said Sandeep Singh Gill, during a press conference.

Indore couple was accompanied by three men on day they went missing, claims guide
SHILLONG: A tourist guide on Saturday claimed that the honeymoon couple from Indore, Raja Raghuvanshi and his wife Sonam, was accompanied by three men on the day they went missing from Meghalaya's Sohra area. An official confirmed that the guide had provided this information to the police. While the couple went missing on May 23, Raja's body was found in a gorge on June 2 while a search for his wife was underway. Speaking to PTI, Albert Pde, a guide at Mawlakhiat, said he had seen the couple accompanied by three male tourists as they were climbing over 3,000 steps from Nongriat to Mawlakhiat around 10 am on May 23. He said he recognised the couple as he had offered his services to them on the previous day to climb down to Nongriat but they had politely refused and hired another guide. "The four men were walking ahead while the woman was behind. The four men were conversing in Hindi but I could not understand what they were speaking as I know only Khasi and English," Pde said. He said that he had offered his services to take them to Nongriat on May 22 but they had hired another guide, named Bha Wansai, and spent the night at Shipara homestay and returned the next day without a guide. "By the time I reached Mawlakhiat, their scooter was not there," the guide claimed. He has also given his statement to the police.

Haryana Police had summoned Punjab-based YouTuber Jasbir Singh on June 6 in the Jyoti Malhotra espionage case but before he could join the investigation, he was arrested by Punjab Police , Singh's counsel claimed on Saturday. He also denied the charge that Singh was an agent of Pakistan's spy agency ISI. Police sought a seven-day remand of Singh but the court granted them two days, said his counsel. Live Events Jasbir Singh alias Jaan Mahal (41), a resident of village Mahlan in Rupnagar district, was running a YouTube channel "JaanMahal Video" with over 11 lakh subscribers, ostensibly posting travel and cooking vlogs. Singh was allegedly in close touch with Haryana-based influencer Jyoti Malhotra, who is in custody on charges of spying for Pakistan. After Singh's arrest, Punjab police had claimed that it unearthed a "terror-backed espionage network" linking him to Pakistani intelligence and army officials. Police had said that the YouTuber was allegedly spying for Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). Speaking to reporters on Saturday, Singh's counsel Mohit Dhupar said he met him in the court on Saturday. "We spoke to him. There is no such thing that is being said in the media that he was an ISI agent," said Dhupar, claiming he was just a vlogger. Dhupar said Singh was summoned by Punjab Police from May 17 till May 30. He had already given his mobile phone and laptop to the police, said the counsel. Dhupar said on June 2, Hisar police summoned Singh to join the investigation in the Jyoti Malhotra case on June 6. When Punjab Police came to know about him being summoned by the Haryana police, Singh was asked to appear on June 3 and he was arrested on June 4, said the counsel. "Punjab Police might have felt that if Haryana Police arrested Singh, it would be their insult", claimed Dhupar. The counsel said there was no mention of Singh being summoned from May 17 to May 30 in the FIR. Hisar native Malhotra (33) who was running a YouTube channel 'Travel with JO' was arrested last month. To a question on Punjab Police claiming that 150 Pakistani contacts were retrieved from his phone, Dhupar said there was no such thing. "Many people visited Pakistan multiple times. Did they become guilty (of doing wrong) by visiting the neighbouring nation," he said while replying to a question. On Pakistani YouTuber Nasir Dhillon's alleged link to a spy network, Dhupar said the police did not take Dhillon's name in the court while seeking Singh's remand. Nasir Dhillon, a former Pakistani police official, runs a YouTube channel 'Punjabi Lehar'. He has claimed to unite families divided during partition in 1947. His role is reportedly under investigation for possible links to the espionage network unearthed by Indian authorities. Asked whether Singh gave his laptop to Pakistani official Ehsan-ur-Rahim alias Danish, Dhupar denied it and said when Singh visited Pakistan, his laptop was examined for a routine security check. On May 13, India expelled Danish, who was posted at the Pakistan High Commission, for allegedly indulging in espionage. Jasbir Singh was allegedly found to be associated with a Pakistani Intelligence Operative (PIO). He was in contact with a Pakistan High Commission official who was recently expelled from New Delhi on charges of spying and had met Pakistan Army officials during one of his three visits to the neighbouring country, police had earlier said. He was allegedly in close contact with Jyoti Malhotra who was earlier arrested by Haryana Police on espionage charges. Singh was found to be associated with Pakistani Intelligence Operative (PIO) Shakir alias Jutt Randhawa. The accused had also travelled to Pakistan on three occasions including in 2020, 2021 and 2024, and came into direct contact with ISI officers, who subsequently cultivated and recruited him to carry out espionage activities within India, police had said. Investigations revealed that Singh attended the Pakistan National Day event in Delhi on Danish's invitation, where he met Pakistani Army officials and vloggers. After Jyoti Malhotra's arrest, accused Singh had attempted to erase all traces of his communications with these PIOs to avoid detection, police had said. The police had alleged that Singh was in touch with many Pakistan-based entities including ISI agents and had been providing sensitive information about the movement of the Indian Army and other inside activities of the country to Pakistan.
