Herald Education Awards recognise university and college achievements
Colleges and universities submitted entries in 16 individual and group categories. The judging panel named Queen Margaret University (QMU) the Higher Education Institute of the Year for 2025, based on its winning submissions in two categories and its nods on the shortlist in three more categories.
QMU won the Outstanding Contribution from a Staff Member award for the work of Evelyn Weir, who has been a leading figure in podiatry for 30 years and Senior Lecturer in Podiatry, Clinical Lead for Podiatry, and Collaborative Academic Link for two podiatry programmes with QMU's Greek partner institution.
Colleagues highlighted Evelyn's volunteer efforts to help homeless people and singled her out as the staff member who goes 'above and beyond' to support care-experienced students.
'Evelyn provides the extra care, encouragement and financial guidance necessary to ensure students have a transformative university experience – ensuring they reach their potential, during their degree and beyond.'
QMU also won in the Outstanding Contribution to the Local Community category for their Wooden Spoon Frame Running Hub. Frame running uses purpose-built three-wheeled frames to allow individuals with limited or no independent walking ability the freedom of independent movement.
QMU's hub is the first of its kind in Scotland and perhaps the first in the world.
New College Lanarkshire (NCL) impressed this year's judges with the breadth of its submissions: NCL was shortlisted in eight categories and won for Outstanding Contribution from a College Student (Chloe Sandilands), Widening Access achievement in partnership with the University of the West of Scotland (UWS), and NCL Deputy Principal Ann Baxter took home the Lifetime Achievement Award.
Judges were impressed by Chloe's work at the college to extend support and a welcoming hand to her fellow students. After beginning her college career while she was homeless, Chloe became a passionate advocate for diversity, inclusion and student wellbeing.
Chloe also capitalised on the ability to enrol in NCL's Undergraduate School, Scotland's first undergraduate school located on a college campus developed in partnership with UWS.
The Undergraduate School won the 2025 Widening Access Award, demonstrating an ability to create useful new routes to degrees for communities that are typically below the Scottish average for degree achievement.
Chloe was joined in the category by co-winner Jorja Boyd from City of Glasgow College. College staff said that Jorja struggled to receive full support during her school career due to her autism.
Despite limited opportunities for qualifications, Jorja applied to the college's free support learning programme in bakery in 2019. This proved a crucial stepping stone, as Jorja went on to SCQF levels 4, 5, 6, and 7 and pursued her HNC in Legal Services.

She advocates for students with additional support needs (ASN), particularly through biweekly basketball sessions for ASN youths.
Meanwhile, Ann Baxter was recognised with the Lifetime Achievement Award for her 30 years in the college sector. Before starting in education, Ms Baxter worked as a nurse and Matron in Northern Ireland, serving as a frontline healthcare worker at the height of The Troubles.
After moving to Scotland and beginning work in the college, she battled sexism and under-resourcing to create a variety of new programmes meant to connect students with employment opportunities.
Other awards on the night included colleges and universities scooping honours for technological innovations, community service projects, inclusion, and top-shelf marketing campaigns.
One of the standouts for the judges was Glasgow Clyde College's 'Swiftie Masterclass,' which won for Marketing/PR Campaign of the Year. With Taylor Swift's Eras tour coming to Scotland in Summer 2024, the college decided that it would provide an opportunity to create an 'authentic and meaningful' campaign that would capitalise on the natural buzz surrounding the pop sensation's arrival.
The result was a free, one-off 90-minute masterclass, which targeted parents and plus-ones who would be attending the concert but may not be on the same level of fandom as their fellow ticketholders.
From background information on songs and lyrics to essential concert choreography and attire, a Taylor Swift expert walked attendees through everything they would need to know to fit in and make the most of the night.
The college received over 200 pieces of media coverage for its project, generating millions of views globally.
Less glitter but no less impactful for students, the University of St Andrews' Common Extension Request System took home the Innovative Use of Technology Award Sponsored by Jisc for creating a system to streamline student extension requests and ensure fairness and efficiency in the process.
The project makes it easier for students to access the support they are entitled to and gives the university better tracking abilities to create and implement more useful policies.

Episode 8 Episode 8 of The Better Sister begins with Nicky telling Chloe what happened the night Adam was murdered. Who kills Adam and why? Nicky checks in on Debbie, Adam's mother, from time to time, and is at her place when Ethan calls. He tells Nicky about the fight and is scared for Chloe. Nicky panics as he reveals that Adam has been hitting Chloe often. She gets ready to confront Adam and Debbie randomly comments how Adam and Chloe have left them, suggesting there is no love lost between mother and son. Nicky shows up at the beach house and threatens to expose Adam. She wants to talk to Chloe but a drunk Adam grabs her and tries to make her leave. She fights back and he chokes her. She has a pocket knife and she stabs him. After she leaves, Ethan arrives home. He finds Adam and thinks Chloe has killed him. He stages a break-in and is about to leave when Adam moves. But instead of calling for help, Ethan lets Adam die. Meanwhile, Nicky rushes back to Debbie's and cleans up. The pills she grabs are antibiotics for her injuries. And that's what she takes when the cops call her. How does Chloe handle Adam's murder case? Nicky worries that Nancy may put her in prison even though it was self-defence. Chloe promises to fix things and takes the knife. As for the gun, we learn that Nicky was going to cause a scene if Ethan had been found guilty. Later, Jake shows up and confides in Chloe about the Gentry investigation for illegal construction. They are in trouble from Gentry as well as Olivero, since they won't stop till they get what they want. And it is the dirt that Adam has on Gentry Group. Chloe reports Olivero for sexual harassment and physical abuse. She then looks around and finds the Gentry files. There is also a recording in which Bill orders Adam to extort Gentry. She makes a copy and sends it to Matt. She then gives the originals to Bill as a peace offering. While he is distracted, she hides Nicky's knife, the murder weapon, in Bill's study. After she leaves, Matt gets a search warrant and finds the knife. He arrests Bill for corruption and suspicion of murdering Adam. Why is Nancy unable to catch Nicky? Nancy looks into Debbie who has a criminal record for fraud using Adam's social security number. They are estranged as Adam didn't like his parents' wayward lifestyle. The cop visits her and tries to trace Nicky's whereabouts. Debbie reveals that Nicky forgot her phone when she stepped out for a while on the day Adam died. When she returned, she told Debbie that Ethan had been stabbed. Once she realises that Nancy suspects Nicky, she shuts down. It is enough for Nancy to deduce that Nicky used her phone's location as her alibi. Nancy texts forensics to check Nicky's DNA against Adam's clothes. Unfortunately for her, McCabe finds out that Nancy beat up Eddy. However, Eddy isn't the trafficker. She beat up the wrong, innocent Black guy. Nicky gives the proof to Catherine who publicizes it. The Lieutenant is forced to take Nancy off the case and put her on leave. Her request to forensics gets cancelled. He also points out that Debbie's testimony is hearsay from a grieving mother and Bill is the primary suspect. What's the deal with Gentry Group? Bill fires Jake to appease Gentry Group as he is the only other known FBI mole. Bill tells them that they have a mole too, who confirmed that Adam was working with the FBI. However, Bill looks out for Chloe and insists that he will take care of her. Jake goes to Chloe and we learn that Gentry built a stadium with indentured labour. The construction also involved violations of human rights and regulations. Adam felt guilty and went to the FBI. After he was killed, Agent Olivero blackmailed Jake into helping him. At the end of The Better Sister Episode 8, Jake is found dead, presumably killed by Gentry for being the mole. How does it end for the Macintoshes? Ethan is upset with Chloe for picking Adam over Nicky. Nicky defends her and claims Chloe only had Ethan's best interests at heart. Later, he confesses that he feels like the bad guy for letting Adam die. Nicky comforts him and he hopes to go with her if she leaves New York. When Nicky visits Catherine to take down Nancy, the editor asks her about the book deal which is pretty much confirmed. Nicky confronts Chloe who reveals she forgot to tell her because of the killer plot twist. However, Nicky doesn't care about the book deal and only wants to focus on her family. She asks where Chloe's loyalties lie and Chloe insists that it is with her and Ethan. Nicky believes her as she learns that Chloe framed Bill for Adam's murder. That night, Nicky and Chloe smoke by the beach. Chloe shares that the only stories worth telling are with her. Nicky agrees to the book deal. The Episode Review The Better Sister Episode 8 gets a little messy while trying to wrap up the Gentry storyline. They are never actually shown, so the threat involving them doesn't feel as real. And in turn, Bill ends up as a caricature of the magnanimous boss with a dark secret. Jake's death feels anticlimactic as well and we doubt his whining to Chloe brought about any emotions from viewers. Matt is yet another character who is underutilised and just around to crack some jokes, get made fun of, chase dead ends and finally catch a break courtesy of the way cleverer heroine who does his job for him. Catherine is another wasted character who acts shady but doesn't amount to much. She is just a spokesperson, first for the board and then for Nicky. Thankfully, the finale does justice to Chloe, Nicky and Ethan who honestly deserved a larger role in the story. His conflicting emotions involving his toxic parents can be quite relatable to many. Chloe uses her manipulative side for good and tricks Bill into taking the fall for Adam's murder. Sure, one tip from Nancy can have Matt confirming that Nicky is Adam's killer but the show doesn't seem to care about this huge plot hole. Nicky's sincerity is sealed, even though it feels fake at times given we personally don't think Chloe deserves it. With so many shady characters, Nicky stands out like a fish out of water as she genuinely cares for her sister. She goes as far as to confront Adam and tries tell Chloe that her husband hits her because he is…abusive? Thank you, Captain Obvious. Honestly, don't look too deep because the logic in this show is as flawed and flimsy as they come. Although we can appreciate the irony that while everyone thinks Chloe is the better sister, it is Nicky who deserves that mantle. All in all, this Amazon Prime Original is far from perfect, but Banks and Biels keep us hooked with their portrayal of two messy sisters struggling to stay afloat. The Better Sister – Season 1 Episode 6 'Steadying Hand' Recap & Review
Episode 6 Episode 6 of The Better Sister begins with a flashback of Adam at confession. He berates Ethan for being a wastrel. He claims Chloe enables Ethan's bad behaviour and he is the only one trying to fix his son. At present, Nicky tries to confront Chloe who is more worried about appearances and it turns physical. Nancy jumps in and ends up hitting and cuffing Nicky. Michelle orders them to stand down as they need a new game plan. Michelle tells Nicky to play the bad mom so Ethan can look grateful to have had Adam. As for Chloe, she needs to dig into Adam's files and find another suspect. She grabs whatever she can from Adam's office. Bill catches her but she is able to hide the USB. Nancy hangs out with her former mentor, Clark at his bar and he tells her to be careful. She cannot afford to make another mistake and he hints that she has a messy rep. He wants her to do a psych eval to calm the brass. She also discusses the case and thinks Nicky is pretending to be a mess to take the attention away from Ethan. A flashback shows Nicky arriving at her mom's, drunk out of her mind. Everyone's worried but Sheila simply looks after Nicky. At present, Nicky goes to an AA meeting. She thought Chloe and Adam were saving Ethan from her. But she is upset that they messed him up too and now she is going to lose him again. After the meeting, she talks to her friend, Debbie about some orders. Meanwhile, Matt shows up at the FBI HQs. He tries to ID the agent with Chloe but is forced to leave. At the same time, Chloe meets Agent Olivero and gives him the USB. He refuses to help with Ethan's case and even threatens her. Upset, she rushes off and calls Michelle. Back to Nicky, she takes a walk with Ken and talks about Adam. He hated that Ethan needed her and hit her when she drank. Ken points out that Adam and Chloe left her instead of helping her. He pushes her to accept that she is angry about it. She goes skinny dipping and remembers the fateful day at the pool. As for Chloe, she tells Jake about the FBI looking into Gentry and is upset that he knows. She wants him to testify against Gentry but he refuses as they are too powerful. He wishes he could help and she hooks up with him. She is definitely scheming as Dom gets a tip that the sisters are going to drop a bomb during their testimonies. He lashes out at Nancy who points out that he himself ordered them to drop any leads not involving Ethan. Back home, Chloe and Nicky break into Adam's briefcase and find the gun. Nicky wants to make themselves suspicious but Chloe begs her to listen to Michelle. She states that Ethan needs them and Nicky is touched. Chloe accepts that she made a mistake cutting Nicky out. Before the next hearing, Michelle tells Ethan that his next best bet is a plea bargain, despite being innocent. He wishes he had hurt his father and she comforts him. Bill and Jake show up as support and Chloe pretends to be grateful. Catherine brings everyone Chloe has helped and sponsored. Ken advises Nicky to tell her truth and move on. Nicky takes the stand and paints Adam as a good, disciplined and philanthropic guy. She thought she could change by being with him. She knew Adam was good for Ethan, unlike her, which is why she agreed to give away her custody rights. But when Dom questions her, he uses the burner phone to prove that Ethan is capable of lying. And since he didn't tell Nicky about the gun or the trolling account, she cannot vouch for his innocence. The tide turns with Chloe's testimony. She pushed Ethan to switch from prosecution to a private law firm and he blamed her for their vapid, pretentious, rich life. He started hitting her. She claims no one knew about the abuse except Jake as they are having an affair. She adds that Jake was angry with Adam. Nicky looks impressed while Jake is upset that he's been thrown under the bus. He is called up and Michelle treats him like a suspect. We also learn that he was the one Chloe was texting from her burner phone on the night of the murder. He looks sad but accepts his role for Ethan's sake. He refuses to answer every question, including the one asking if he killed Adam. Michelle's closing statement reminds the jury that there is no murder weapon and no proof that Ethan was in the house on the night of the murder. The prosecution's argument is based on hearsay and assumptions. Michelle points out that Jake is a more likely suspect. During the break, Nicky cries in the bathroom and Chloe holds her hand. Thankfully, the verdict is that Ethan is not guilty. Nicky looks relieved as she heads back alone. She has the gun in her purse. She cooks for Ethan while Chloe brings him his things. He apologises for the hate comments and Chloe understands that he was angry with her and Adam. He is worried about Jake but she doesn't care. She asks about the bloody shoes and he explains that he staged it all to cover for her. She is confused by his belief that she killed Adam and The Better Sister Episode 6 comes to a close. The Episode Review The Better Sister Episode 6 seems to be the strongest chapter of the show yet. It finally meshes the two different genres of drama and thriller to give a solid blend of a messy court case with a meddling and scheming family. It gives Jake his spotlight while allowing Chloe to finally lean into her manipulative nature. Nancy's aggressive personality pays off, as her mistakes may lead to her quitting before the truth can be revealed. The tiny clues involving Nicky's drama also add to the murder mystery such as the gun and the abuse allegations. With Chloe and Ethan's confusion regarding the culprit, it seems that Nicky just may have something to do with Adam's murder. The Gentry misdirect has been as vague as possible and we doubt the show will introduce a complete stranger as the culprit, as the killer reveal won't have the emotional payoff that is expected, thanks to Adam's toxic nature. The Better Sister – Season 1 Episode 7 'Back from Red' Recap & Review
Episode 7 Episode 7 of The Better Sister begins with a flashback to the day before Chloe's event. Adam is tired of their celeb life and picks a fight over it. He pushes her and blames her for his anger. Ethan is talking to Nicky and sees everything. At present, Chloe tells Ethan that while she was angry, she didn't kill Adam. In the morning, Ethan is amused as Nicky and Chloe reminisce about their childhood. They had turned a prayer into a ghost story. For Chloe, the prayer would end in Wallace Lake while Nicky preferred Shadow Lake. The cops are back to square one as Jake has a strong alibi. The lieutenant insists that they need to find a killer as it is a high-profile case. Michelle hangs out with Jake and there are no hard feelings between them. They joke about how messy and dark white rich people are and she warns him to stay away from the Macintoshes. Chloe has come to apologise and she overhears. Once Michelle leaves, Jake looks defeated. He is upset that Chloe weaponised his feelings for her. It is confirmed that they didn't have an affair and the sex before the second hearing was the first time they did anything. He tells her to leave. On her way back, Chloe runs into Matt who reveals that he has been following her. He tells her to be careful about Olivero and she is weirded out by his obsession. The cops finally get a lead when Clark reveals that Arty was kicked out of the bar at 7 after a fight. A flashback shows Adam hiding at the bar instead of going to Chloe's party. He spots Arty and expects him joke about Chloe's controlling nature but it backfires. Arty is protective as he is aware of their shouting matches. He threatens Adam should he hurt Chloe and Clark kicks him out. Nancy heads to her psych eval and we learn of her trauma. She was after a trafficker and finally cornered him after a frustrating investigation. She attacked him instead of waiting for backup and almost died because of it. The therapist explains that she needs a support system that will understand her. Back at the NYC apartment, Arty is glad to see Ethan home. Chloe thanks him for looking out for the boy. She then checks Adam's computer and is annoyed to learn that Bill has deleted all files related to Gentry. Ethan decides to scatter Adam's ashes and gives a eulogy. Adam was an angry father and Ethan was quite scared of him. But he did love him. Nancy hounds Nicky next by showing up at the AA meeting. She nicks Nicky's cigarette for a DNA test but Nicky one-ups her. She ropes in Kevin and follows Nancy secretly. Meanwhile, Chloe tells Catherine that she is ready to come back to work. Catherine is sympathetic to Nicky's case. Chloe confesses that cutting off Nicky was practical but she regrets it. Catherine suggests writing a book about it to win over the board. And by giving the royalties to Nicky and letting her into their elite circle, Chloe can try and make it up to her. As for Nicky, she arrives at an assisted living facility where Nancy is visiting Eddy, a disabled man. She asks a nurse who reveals Nancy is responsible for Eddy's injuries and checks in on him at times. Back to Chloe, she meets Bill who insists on a fresh start. He assures that he didn't delete any files and warns her to stay away from the FBI. She doesn't buy his concern and he schemes with his assistant once she leaves. He is partially right as Agent Olivero shows up at Jake's. He has been blackmailing Adam and Jake into finding dirt on Gentry. Jake tries to refuse and Olivero roughs him up. Elsewhere, Nancy confronts Arty about his alibi and he claims that he has been having an affair. It checks out but what shocks her is when Arty reveals that Nicky is taking care of Adam's mother in Ohio. At the same time, Olivero meets Matt. Chloe gets the usual death threats and Nicky tries to lighten the mood. They are interrupted by Ethan who had put in a request for the files of the pool incident. The report claims Ethan was cold but he hadn't swallowed water. Nicky had a couple of pills and alcohol in her. Adam shared that Nicky was rambling the Wallace Lake prayer when he found her. The trio is shocked as this means Ethan didn't drown. And Chloe had told Adam about the Wallace Lake joke, he didn't know that Nicky had her Shadow Lake version. They realise that he lied. A flashback shows Nicky putting Ethan in a float and hanging about the house. Adam arrives and is upset that Ethan is floating alone in the pool. He roofies her lemonade and once she drinks it, she passes out in the pool. He calls the cops, claiming that his wife and son are drowning. At present, Chloe argues with Hallucination Adam who claims it was a matter of time before Nicky would have killed Ethan. He did it for his son. He also points out that Chloe's life would not be what it is had Nicky been in the picture. Chloe regrets the involuntary hold and cries. Nicky comforts her and reveals that she saw the files a few years ago. She was angry with Adam but knows Chloe was the better mother to Ethan. She was heartbroken when Adam ruined Chloe's life too. It is why she came back to protect her. Chloe is shocked by the confession and The Better Sister Episode 7 comes to a close. The Episode Review It looks like the Amazon Prime show has been sleeping for five episodes straight and now that the finish line is close, they are rushing to churn out their potential ideas into storylines. The Better Sister Episode 7 crams in several such plotlines like Arty's friendship with Chloe and Ethan, Nancy's trauma, Olivero's 'psycho' strategy, Jake's exploitation, Bill's shady behaviour which still has yet to reach a culmination point and Ethan's feelings about his father. We get that Adam's abusive and manipulative behaviour is the big reveal for the final conflict but the rest of the storylines could have easily been integrated from the beginning of the show. But in trying to keep up the suspense, the first six episodes resort to vague clues, suspicious behaviours and several red herrings which can end up boring viewers. These aspects are mostly fillers for when the episodes are not showcasing the sisters' estranged relationship. Had the writers paced out all the different subplots uniformly over the eight episodes, it could have made for a better thriller drama.
