Goalkeeper Chen denies Melbourne City as Wuhan win Asian title on penalties

Straits Times24-05-2025

China's Wuhan Jiangdu won the inaugural Asian Women's Champions League with a 5-4 shoot-out victory over Melbourne City on Saturday as substitute goalkeeper Chen Chen made a pair of saves to claim the title after a 1-1 draw at the end of extra time.
Chen denied City captain Rebekah Stott in the final round of regulation spot kicks to take the shoot-out into sudden death and then kept out Bryleeh Henry's attempt, securing the $1 million first prize for Wuhan in front of their own fans.
Wuhan had needed a penalty from Wang Shuang in the eighth minute of injury time to take proceedings into extra time after a header by 17-year-old City midfielder Shelby McMahon had given the Australians the lead with 16 minutes remaining.
The win makes Wuhan the first team to claim the title following the creation of the competition last year. The Asian Football Confederation had previously run a series of pilot events under the Asian Women's Club Championship banner.
China international Wang had almost opened the scoring with the final kick of the first half, forcing City goalkeeper Malena Mieres to tip a dipping long-range effort over the bar.
Chen, introduced as a substitute for Ding Xuan at halftime, denied McMahon four minutes after the restart when she blocked the midfielder's low strike on the run and five minutes later she kept out Henry's close-range attempt.
The action switched to the opposite end and Mieres dropped to her left to push Song Duan's goal-bound effort to safety on the hour mark.
With 14 minutes remaining City took the lead as McMahon moved into space eight metres from goal to meet McKenna's centre and gave Chen little hope as her well-directed header flew in to her right.
But deep into injury time the Chinese were gifted the opportunity to level, with midfielder Mariana Speckmaier handling inadvertently and, after referee Asaka Koizumi pointed to the spot, Wang stepped up to score.
City squandered several chances to win the game in extra time and could have taken the title in the shoot-out after Mieres saved Song's penalty in the fourth round.
Stott saw her chance to win the title saved by Chen and, after Zhao Yuxin scored the first penalty in sudden death, the Chinese goalkeeper dived to her right to keep out Henry's strike to win the title. REUTERS

Ivankovic takes responsibility after China's World Cup dream ends

FILE PHOTO: Soccer Football - World Cup - Asian Qualifiers - Third Round - Group C - China v Japan - Xiamen Egret Stadium, Xiamen, China - November 19, 2024 China coach Branko Ivankovic before the match REUTERS/Florence Lo/File Photo Soccer Football - World Cup - AFC Qualifiers - Group C - Indonesia v China - Gelora Bung Karno Stadium, Jakarta, Indonesia - June 5, 2025 Indonesia's Dean James, Indonesia's Ole Romeny, Indonesia's Beckham Putra, Indonesia's Rizky Ridho, Indonesia's Ivar Jenner and Indonesia's Rafael Struick celebrate after the match REUTERS/Ajeng Dinar Ulfiana China coach Branko Ivankovic took responsibility for his team's exit from the World Cup qualifiers after they fell to a 1-0 defeat by Indonesia in Jakarta on Thursday. China had faint hopes of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup despite three consecutive losses against Japan, Saudi Arabia and Australia, which left them bottom of Asian qualifying Group C. The expansion of the World Cup from 32 to 48 teams for the 2026 edition had ignited Chinese hopes of a return to the finals for the first time since their sole appearance in 2002. "This team has been fighting for this goal for over 20 years," Ivankovic told reporters. "We believed that if we could reach the next stage from this tough group, we would have a strong chance of qualifying. But we didn't succeed, and as head coach, I definitely bear significant responsibility." The 71-year-old Croatian was appointed by China in February last year to replace Aleksandar Jankovic after the Serbian failed to take the East Asian country beyond the group phase of the 2024 Asian Cup. "We've brought in a younger generation of players who have injected energy into the team. Based on their performances, I believe this team has a promising future," Ivankovic said. "We knew this match would be tough — not just because of the opponent, but also the weather. I want to thank my players for fighting until the very last second." China next host Bahrain, who are in fifth place in Group C, for their final third-round qualifier on June 10. REUTERS Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you.

Crusaders outmuscle Reds to reach Super Rugby semis

The Canterbury Crusaders kept intact their perfect home playoff record with a comfortable 32-12 victory over the Queensland Reds at a rain-soaked Christchurch Stadium on Friday to move into the Super Rugby Pacific semi-finals. The 12-times champions battered the Reds physically in all areas of the game and scored five tries through Scott Barrett, Tamaiti Williams, Noah Hotham, Rivez Reihana and Kyle Preston to take their home playoff record to 30-0. The Reds never got their expansive attack going in the face of the home side's physicality and line speed and tries from Josh Nasser and Fraser McReight against a shorthanded defence in the last 10 minutes were mere consolations. All Blacks captain Barrett opened the scoring in the 17th minute when he knocked the ball out of McReight's hands at a Reds lineout on their own tryline and pounced to score. The visitors were being more frequently penalised and after scrumhalf Tate McDermott was pinged for an attempted jackal closing on the half hour mark, the Crusaders kicked for touch and set up a rolling maul. The Reds stopped the maul but the Crusaders forwards peeled off left with prop Williams burrowing over the line from close range for a converted try that gave his team a 12-0 lead. The Crusaders laid siege to the Reds line and although the Australians kept them out, the repeated tackles were bound to have an impact later in the game. The next score came in the 56th minute through a fine individual try from scrumhalf Hotham, who kicked the ball ahead out of a tackle and raced 30 metres to gather it and touch down. Flyhalf Rivez Reihana added the extras, kicked a 40-metre penalty to stretch the lead to 22-0 on the hour mark before adding the fourth try from close range. "I think the way our forwards stepped up was huge, and the set piece went really well so we're really happy with that," said Crusaders captain David Havili. Crusaders flanker Ethan Blackadder marred an otherwise brilliant performance with a yellow card for a high tackle 11 minutes from time, allowing the Reds to take advantage of the extra man and score twice. "You've got to give credit to the Crusaders," said Reds co-captain McDermott. "They were all over us at the breakdown and the collision area, and we just couldn't get into our cycle." The other three semi-finals spots will be decided on Saturday when the top-seeded Waikato Chiefs take on the reigning champion Auckland Blues and the ACT Brumbies host the Wellington Hurricanes. The losing team from the three matches with the highest finish in the regular season standings also progress to the last four.
