Commemorations held in Bergen-Bergen, Flossenbürg concentration camps
Commemorative events were held in the former Nazi concentration camps in Bergen-Belsen and Flossenbürg on Sunday to mark the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the camps.
Politicians and contemporary witnesses recalled the atrocities. Lower Saxony's Minister President Stephan Weil made an appeal for "Never again is now" at the event in the Lüneburg Heath.
Never again should the dignity and lives of people in Germany be trampled underfoot, never again should human rights be disregarded, never again should arbitrariness take the place of justice, said Weil. "That is the lesson to be learnt from the murder of so many millions of people, that is the mission of the commemoration and remembrance of these events."
The Bergen-Belsen concentration camp was liberated by the British army on April 15, 1945. Around 53,000 people were liberated, but for many, help came too late. Among them was Anne Frank, whose diary brought home to many the sufferings of the Jews in occupied Europe. She is buried in one of the mass graves at the camp.
In total, around 52,000 people died in the camp and immediately after liberation, in addition to almost 20,000 deaths in the neighbouring prisoner of war camp.
In his speech, Israeli Ambassador Ron Prosor addressed the survivors directly. "With your strength, with your courage and with your lives, you are a triumph over inhumanity. We are indebted to you, the survivors. And to the murdered."
Former German president Christian Wulff and President of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, Josef Schuster, were among the guests.

The text displayed in the image referenced a moment from Trump's second Inauguration Day in January in which Musk raised his arm in a gesture that many compared to the stiff-armed salute historically associated with Nazism. Musk later blamed (archived) the "legacy media" for supposedly misinterpreting his actions. Snopes readers emailed about this matter, with one person asking, "True or false? In the current feud between Trump and Elon Musk, the president has publicly commented on Musk's previously reported Nazi salute." Another reader also wrote: "There is a photo on Facebook that appears to be a Trump 'Truth' that says: Elon did in fact do a Nazi salute on stage and everyone knows it." On social media, an X user posted (archived) the image of the alleged Trump post. That user's post, which received more than 1.5 million views, displayed a text caption suggesting the image was nothing more than a joke, reading, "Hahahaha this one is actually funny." Numerous users shared the purported Trump post image or quote on Bluesky (archived), Facebook (archived), Instagram (archived), Threads (archived) and X (archived). (Matthew Rife/X) As the X user's post hinted, someone with the goal of creating a meme fabricated the image of the Trump Truth Social post that said Musk performed a Nazi salute. No such post appeared on Trump's Truth Social feed. There was also no sign of the post on Trump's Truths, a website that archives Trump's Truth Social posts. The fake post screenshot circulated at the same time as a rift widened between Trump and Musk in early June, days following Musk's departure from his role as White House adviser. The rift began with the Tesla and SpaceX CEO's disagreement over provisions included in a Republican-backed bill, referenced by Trump as the "big, beautiful bill," which features tax breaks and spending cuts. Musk called the bill a "disgusting abomination." At one point during the back-and-forth between Trump and Musk, which mostly occurred on social media, Trump floated (archived) an idea on his Truth Social account of terminating federal subsidies and contracts associated with Musk's companies. Musk then fired back on X, alleging Trump appeared in unreleased government files associated with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Musk added (archived), "That is the real reason they have not been made public." He did not provide evidence to support his claim. In an emailed statement to Snopes, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt responded to Musk's allegation about Epstein not by directly addressing Snopes' question but instead sending a general statement about the pair's feud. "This is an unfortunate episode from Elon, who is unhappy with the One Big Beautiful Bill because it does not include the policies he wanted," Leavitt said. "The President is focused on passing this historic piece of legislation and making our country great again." Revolutionary War-era reenactment being held at Hagerstown City Park

Israel arming Gaza militias fighting Hamas, Netanyahu says
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has confirmed Israel is arming militias in southern Gaza that are opposed to Hamas. Netanyahu admitted to the arrangement after Israeli politician Avigdor Lieberman, formerly the country's deputy prime minister and minister of defense, told the press about it on Thursday. "What did Lieberman leak? That on the recommendation of security officials we launched groups that oppose Hamas?" Netanyahu said during a press availability. "What is wrong with this? It's only good. it saves the lives of Israeli soldiers. But the publication of this is only good for Hamas." Netanyahu has faced internal criticism in Israel for the move, including from Lieberman, a long-time political rival. Aid distribution on indefinite pause The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation closed its aid distribution sites on Friday, without giving a date on when they would reopen, as Palestinians in Gaza remain at risk of extreme starvation and famine, the United Nations and other aid groups have warned. The GHF has previously paused aid delivery in Gaza earlier this week after several people died and were injured trying to reach the sites to obtain food, according to eyewitness reports on the ground, international aid organizations working in Gaza and the Hamas-run Gaza Ministry of Health. The majority of victims suffered gunshot wounds, according to the International Committee of the Red Cross. The Israel Defense Forces acknowledged they "carried out warning fire approximately half a kilometer from the aid distribution center, targeting a few individuals who were approaching in a way that posed a security threat," in a video statement by IDF spokesperson Effie Defrin. The GHF, a joint operation by the U.S. and Israel, is now the only major organization delivering aid in the war-torn Gaza Strip. The U.N. has said Aid distribution resumed at two sites on Thursday before being put on hold again Friday. The GHF asked people to stay away from the distribution sites for their "safety," it said in a post on social media on Friday. This comes after the Israeli government imposed an 11-week blockade on all humanitarian aid entering Gaza. The Israeli government said the blockade was put in place to pressure Hamas to release the remaining hostages being held in Gaza. Food distribution centers in southern Gaza have been overrun with thousands and thousands of Palestinians in search of food and medicine after the partial lifting of the Israeli blockade. The International Committee of the Red Cross said it has responded to five mass casualty incidents, four of which occurred in the last 96 hours alone in a statement Tuesday.
