The Argentine World Cup winner dashed in to challenge the Portugal star, appearing to grab his shirt.
Messi's arm took one low, harmless swing - then as Vitinha laid the ball back, the 38-year-old appeared to take a much wilder swing at head height.
Luckily the flailing arm didn't appear to make contact with the ex-Porto ace, who turned round as if he hadn't realised what had happened.
Swing when you're whinging seemed to be the verdict from many fans on Messi's antics.

England's Mead says no football talk with Dutch partner Miedema ahead of Euros clash

July 1 (Reuters) - England forward Beth Mead said she wants her partner Vivianne Miedema to play well at Euro 2025, just not when the Netherlands striker lines up on the opposite side of the pitch for their Group D match on July 9. Manchester City's Miedema, the Women's Super League's all-time top scorer, and Mead began a relationship while they were teammates at Arsenal. Mead said there was an air of inevitability that England and the Netherlands would be drawn together at the tournament in Switzerland. "When the draw was made, we both sat there and said 'of course that's happened," she told reporters on Monday. "We're both very, very competitive and professional. We're both excited for the tournament and to be able to play in it again. "We keep in contact but when it gets closer to our games, we don't talk football whatsoever. "Obviously, we want each other to do well but not against each other." England begin their campaign against France on July 5, while Netherlands play Wales.

Club World Cup exit as painful as Champions League elimination

Bernardo Silva is refusing to look at Manchester City's shock exit from the Club World Cup as a blessing in disguise. The Premier League outfit crashed out of the competition in the early hours of Tuesday morning as they were beaten 4-3 in extra time by Saudi outfit Al-Hilal after a pulsating last-16 clash in Orlando. City had established themselves as one of the favourites to triumph in the United States after winning all three of their group games in convincing fashion. A run to the final would have prolonged their campaign until July 13, however, just five weeks before the next Premier League season begins. After much debate about the impact of the Club World Cup on player welfare, there is a feeling in some quarters that City – after an underwhelming 2024-25 season – need the rest, but Silva does not see it that way. The City captain said: 'No-one wanted to lose. We are very used to not having holidays, unfortunately, because the schedule is crazy and when we are in a competition we take it very seriously. 'We had a lot of ambition for this Club World Cup and we wanted to win it.' Asked if the defeat hurt as much as Champions League elimination, Silva said: 'Yes, a little bit. Yes.' City had taken early control with a ninth-minute goal from Silva at the Camping World Stadium, but they were to rue missing a succession of chances to increase the lead before the break. Al-Hilal turned the game around through Marcos Leonardo and Malcom and reclaimed the advantage again with a Kalidou Koulibaly header after Erling Haaland forced extra time. Phil Foden made it 3-3, but City could not regain the initiative and Leonardo settled an eventful contest – and secured a statement victory for Saudi football – with 112 minutes on the clock. Silva said: 'There was always a feeling of danger coming from them when they recovered the ball in transition and their counters. We allowed them to run way too many times. 'But apart from that we had chances. We scored three goals and we could have scored five or six. 'They punished us. They have a good team with a lot of individual quality and congratulations to them.' Former Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves impressed in the Al-Hilal midfield and fellow Portuguese Joao Cancelo was a threat against his old City team-mates. Silva, also a Portugal international, said: 'I have friends there, I know most of their players and I know the quality they have. 'We were expecting another difficult game like Juventus and when you don't control transitions then good players, like Al-Hilal have, punish you. That's what happened.' City begin the new Premier League season at Wolves on August 16. Silva said: 'We will try to have as much rest as possible but also come back to prepare for the season properly.'

England stars could face 20-minute half-times and more match stoppages at 2026 World Cup after Club World Cup chaos

ENGLAND stars could face longer half-times and more hydration breaks at next year's World Cup. And Three Lions fans at home may be forced to stay up into the early hours because daytime kick-offs on the US East Coast are a health risk. 2 2 International players' union FifPro issued the stark warning after heatwave chaos at the Club World Cup. FifPro director of policy Alexander Bielefeld said: 'This has to be a wake-up call for Fifa. 'It's clear that in certain areas, especially Florida, there is a higher risk and a need to avoid midday kick-offs. "So games in these cities should be moved to a later time. 'Health and safety of players must take priority over commercial interests, including broadcasters.' Fifpro want Fifa to double the number of drinks breaks - to two per half - at the next World Cup. The union also require half-time breaks to be extended to 20 minutes, instead of the maximum 15. But the latter would need the agreement of the International FA Board. Fifpro also want Fifa to postpone afternoon kick-offs to the evenings if temperatures are too high. They said such a measure should have been taken in the Club World Cup when Bayern Munich faced Benfica last week in Charlotte, North Carolina. England manager Thomas Tuchel reacts to Three Lions' World Cup 2026 qualifying draw FifPro's chief medical officer Professor Vincent Gouttebarge said: 'Only giving players 15 minutes is not enough at these temperatures — you cannot ingest enough in such a short time. 'If we anticipate the biggest tournament on earth next year and in Mexico as well there are some venues where games played during the afternoon are likely to be very extreme for health and performance of the players. 'We are anticipating that there are going to be more problems for the coming years in the 2030 World Cup in Spain and Portugal, perhaps even worse.'
