NASA satellite records unprecedented river waves in the United States
SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — NASA's U.S.-French Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) satellite, which was launched in 2022 from Vandenberg Space Force Base, has spotted large-scale river waves for the first time, the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Southern California has announced.
The river waves, which, unlike ocean waves, are temporary surges of water, stretched from 47 to 166 miles long as they traveled down rivers in Montana, Texas, and Georgia, the SWOT satellite recorded.

The three large waves measured by the SWOT satellite from 2023 to 2024 were believed to be caused by extreme rainfall and a loosened ice jam, NASA reports, with the largest measuring over 30-feet-tall, creating potentially hazardous flood waves traveling down U.S. rivers.
Ocean waves are primarily driven by wind and the gravitational pull of the moon and sun — tides – and move across the ocean until they crash to shore. According to NASA, river waves are temporary surges that can stretch tens to hundreds of miles, and are typically caused by rainfall or seasonal snowmelt. The waves can be beneficial, by shuttling nutrients and organisms down a river. But extreme river waves are usually triggered by a prolonged downpour or dam break and can cause floods.

'Ocean waves are well known from surfing and sailing, but rivers are the arteries of the planet. We want to understand their dynamics,' said Cedric David, a hydrologist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California and a coauthor of a new study published May 14 in Geophysical Research Letters.
Since 2022, the SWOT satellite has surveyed the height of nearly all of Earth's surface waters, both fresh and salty, using its sensitive Ka-band Radar Interferometer (KaRIn), which maps the elevation and width of water bodies by bouncing microwaves off the surface and timing how long the signal takes to return.

Lead author Hana Thurman of Virginia Tech and team used SWOT data to search for river waves for her doctoral research.
Thurman and team measured SWOT data that recorded the first wave on the Yellowstone River in Montana in April 2023. The satellite recorded the wave rise abruptly to 9.1 feet, and flow toward the Missouri River in North Dakota. It then divided into a 6.8-mile-long peak followed by a more drawn‐out tail.
Through optical Sentinel-2 imagery of the area, Thurman was able to determine that the wave likely resulted from an ice jam breaking apart upstream and releasing pent-up water.
The other two river waves were found to be caused by rainfall runoff.
On Jan. 25, 2024, on the Colorado River south of Austin, Texas, a river wave over 30-feet-tall and and 166 miles long traveled around 3.5 feet per second for over 250 miles before discharging into Matagorda Bay, and was associated with the largest flood of the year on that section of river, according to NASA.

The third wave originated on the Ocmulgee River near Macon, Georgia, in March 2024. The SWOT satellite measured it at over 20-feet-tall and extending more than 100 miles, traveling about a foot per second for more than 124 miles.
'We're learning more about the shape and speed of flow waves, and how they change along long stretches of river,' Thurman said. 'That could help us answer questions like, how fast could a flood get here and is infrastructure at risk?'
The study is helping engineers and water managers measure river waves in ways never before possible, who have long relied on stream gauges. Also, knowing where and why river waves develop can help scientists track changing flood patterns around the world.
'Satellite data is complementary because it can help fill in the gaps,' said study supervisor George Allen, a hydrologist and remote sensing expert at Virginia Tech.
Orbiting Earth multiple times each day, SWOT is expected to observe some 55% of large-scale floods at some stage in their life cycle. 'If we see something in the data, we can say something,' David said of SWOT's potential to flag dangerous floods in the making. 'For a long time, we've stood on the banks of our rivers, but we've never seen them like we are now.'

The SWOT satellite was jointly developed by NASA and the French space agency CNES (Centre National d'Études Spatiales), with contributions from the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) and the UK Space Agency.
NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, managed for the agency by Caltech in Pasadena, California, leads the U.S. component of the project.

The Dangers Of Raw Milk, According To An Expert
At this point, if you've ever wandered through a local farmer's market or fallen into a TikTok wellness rabbit hole filled with 'home on the range' tradwife energy, you've probably stumbled into the raw milk debate — which, FYI, is rife with hashtags like #primal, #healing, #therawtruth, and #divinemasculinity. The central claim from the raw milk camp is that pasteurization — heating milk to kill harmful bacteria — also wipes out all the good stuff. Some even say this is why your lactose-intolerant stomach can't handle conventional dairy. However, according to Dr. Supriya Rao, a board-certified gastroenterologist (read: an actual medical expert, not someone with a ring light and a soft filter), that claim doesn't totally hold up. In fact, much of the raw milk argument neglects the fact that raw dairy can harbor harmful pathogens like E. coli or Listeria. And, while 'some individuals with lactose intolerance report better tolerance to raw dairy due to natural lactase enzymes, there is limited evidence to support this,' says Dr. Rao. Another raw milk argument? That pasteurization only became necessary when people moved into cities and stopped milking cows in their backyards. The demand for milk skyrocketed, cows got packed into grimy urban dairies, and their diets devolved into "swill" — leftover distillery mash with zero nutrients. Unsurprisingly, this became a bacterial disaster. Enter Louis Pasteur, who developed pasteurization in the 1860s. And while the French may now be the poster children for raw cheese, they also figured out early on that maybe we shouldn't risk death-by-dairy. So, where are we now? The dust has settled, and raw milk seems to be enjoying a second life as a #healthygirl accessory. For the rest of us plebeians, it still feels like a shortcut to a week-long, salmonella-fueled diarrhea spiral. Even doctors on TikTok have stepped in now, begging people to chill the hell out. One creator (@rubin_allergy) — again, actual MD and board-certified allergist, not just someone who has #healedtheirgut — warns that the issue isn't just adults making risky gut choices. It's the kids. 'There are many members of society who are vulnerable to misinformation and don't have much control over their decisions,' Dr. Rubin says. Translation: your toddler didn't exactly opt into the crunchy granola, raw-milk-loving life. Okay, sure. We can admit that pasteurization insignificantly removes a few enzymes and vitamins. But let's not lose the plot. As Dr. Rao puts it plainly: 'The benefits do not outweigh the risks.' Unless you're personally milking Bessie in your backyard — and also scrubbing down your equipment like you're prepping for surgery — raw milk is a gamble. A cute glass bottle and a rustic label don't cancel out the very real possibility of pathogens like E. coli, Listeria, and even tuberculosis. And no, 'small-batch' doesn't mean 'sterile.' 'Even with strict sanitation, contamination can occur during milking, storage, or transport,' says Rao. Yum-my. If you truly love raw milk, churn butter on your own time and live your Laura Ingalls Wilder reboot. But if you're promoting it online like it's the dairy version of the Ten Commandments, include a disclaimer: this isn't for everyone. Most people don't have the time, space, or money to keep their own cow, and once you're relying on external producers, you're right back where we started — trusting industrial systems to handle something inherently risky. Sure, maybe our ancestors drank raw milk. But they also lived through polio, lacked indoor plumbing, and thought bloodletting was peak healthcare. Not every historical habit needs a comeback. Now let's talk about the French because, of course. They adore raw dairy, and yes, the cheese counters of France are basically temples to mold and milk. But there's a major difference: they don't take chances with the milk itself. Raw cheese is aged. 'FDA regulations require raw cheese to be aged at least 60 days,' says Rao. 'During this time, harmful bacteria are often neutralized by natural cultures and lactic acid, making the cheese safer.' Let's not forget that the entire process of pasteurization exists because of France. Remember, Mr. Pasteur, the man himself, developed the method to prevent microbial contamination in food and wine and later, milk. It was a life-saving breakthrough, not a government overreach. Abandoning it in the name of 'natural health' is like rejecting penicillin because it came from a lab and wasn't grown on organic sourdough. So, when is raw dairy okay? In regulated, controlled environments, like aging rooms with microbial testing with products that are monitored and time-buffered to reduce risk. But raw dairy as a lifestyle brand? As a wellness shortcut or a sign of anti-establishment enlightenment? That's where things get dicey. The Indian pilot set for a historic space journey on Axiom-4
The Axiom Mission 4 (Ax-4), set to take off from Nasa's Kennedy Space Center in Florida next week, will be piloted by an Indian as it soars towards the International Space Station (ISS). Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla of the Indian air force is among the four-member multi-country crew of Ax-4 that will be spending two weeks on the ISS. The flight, scheduled for 10 June at 08:22 EDT (12:22GMT; 17:52IST), has generated a huge interest in India as Group Captain Shukla will only be the second Indian ever to travel to space and the first to visit the ISS. The trip comes 41 years after cosmonaut Rakesh Sharma became the first Indian to fly to space aboard a Russian Soyuz in 1984. He spent nearly eight days there. Ax-4 is led by former Nasa astronaut Peggy Whitson - a space veteran who has been commander of ISS twice, spent hundreds of days in space and done 10 space walks. The team also includes Slawosz Uznanski-Wisniewski from Poland and Tibor Kapu from Hungary - just like the Indian astronaut, they will also be taking their countries back to space after more than four decades. Experts say the pilot's role is key, as he would serve as second-in-command to the mission commander, assisting with spacecraft operations during launch, docking, undocking and return to Earth. The astronauts, who have been in quarantine since 25 May to prepare for the trip, addressed a press conference on Tuesday night where they showed-off Joy - a small, white toy swan they said would be "the fifth crew member" on Ax-4. "We are good for the launch, we have completed all the training and the team has bonded well," Commander Whitson said. Describing the past year as "nothing short of transformative" for him, Group Captain Shukla said he did not have words to describe his excitement. "It has been an amazing journey so far, but the best is yet to come," he said. "As I go into space, I carry not just instruments and equipment, I carry hopes and dreams of a billion hearts. "I request all Indians to pray for the success of our mission," he added. The 39-year-old was among four Indian air force officers shortlisted last year to travel on the country's first-ever human space flight, scheduled for 2027. The Gaganyaan mission aims to send three astronauts to an orbit of 400km and bring them back after three days. India has also announced ambitious plans to set up a space station by 2035 and send an astronaut to the Moon by 2040. India's space agency Isro has been carrying out a number of tests to prepare for Gaganyaan. In December, it plans to send a female humanoid robot to space as part of the tests. So, officials say the weekend's mission comes as a "unique exciting opportunity" for Isro and has generated a lot of interest in India. The trip to ISS aboard Ax-4 - a commercial flight operated by Houston-based private company Axiom Space - is a collaborative effort between Nasa, Isro and European Space Agency (Esa). Sunday's flight will be launched using the SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule on a Falcon 9 rocket. Isro, which has paid 5bn rupees ($59m; £43m) to secure a seat for Group Captain Shukla and his training, says the experience he will gain during his trip to the ISS will help India immensely. "The benefit we will get from this mission is phenomenal in terms of the training, exposure to the facilities and the experience of jointly conducting experiments in space," Isro Chairman V Narayanan recently said. Sudeesh Balan, Isro project director, said Group Captain Shukla had been training since August last year. "He's undergone rigorous training, including physical and psychological assessments, to prepare for the journey." Born on 10 October 1985 in the northern city of Lucknow, Group Captain Shukla joined the Indian air force as a fighter pilot in 2006. According to Axiom Space, he has over 2,000 hours of flying experience and has flown MiGs, Sukhois, Dorniers, Jaguars and Hawks. His sister Shuchi Mishra, however, told the BBC that his entry into the air force was "accidental". "When he was 17 and in high school, his friend got a form to apply to the National Defence Academy. But this friend was slightly overage so he was not qualified. Not wanting to waste the form, Shubhanshu filled it up," Ms Mishra said. "He was selected - and has never looked back." Ms Mishra says their family "is thrilled as one of ours has been chosen out of India's 1.4 billion people" for this mission. "We all feel so privileged and proud that he's a part of our family and that we've been a part of his journey." Her brother, she says, is undertaking this journey for his country - for the next generation. "He always tells people to dream big, to do something for the nation. We are hoping that his trip will inspire the next generation." Besides piloting the mission, the Indian astronaut will have a busy schedule during his time on ISS. Considering the huge interest in the flight, Isro has said they are organising events for him to interact with Indian students and answer their questions while floating in space. "We believe it will motivate our young minds to become passionate about space tech," Mr Balan said. But most of the time, the four-member crew will be conducting 60 scientific experiments, seven of which come from India. Former Nasa scientist Mila Mitra says Isro's experiments will help improve our understanding of space and its effects on biology and micro-gravity. One of the key experiments, she explains, will investigate the impact of spaceflight on six varieties of crop seeds. "This project aims to help understand how crops may be grown in space for future exploration missions. After the mission, seeds will be grown for multiple generations and plants showing preferred traits will be selected for genetic analyses." Another Isro experiment involves growing three strains of microalgae which could be used as food, fuel or even in life support systems and this will help identify the most suitable ones for growing in microgravity, she says. The Isro projects would also investigate how tardigrades - micro-animals on Earth that can survive extreme environments - would fare in space. "The project will examine the revival of dormant tardigrades, count the number of eggs laid and hatched during a mission, and compare space-flown versus ground control populations," Ms Mitra says. The other experiments aim to identify how muscle loss occurs in space and how it can be treated; and the physical and cognitive impact of using computer screens in microgravity. "The research will study how gaze fixation and rapid eye movements are affected by being in space, and how this may affect an astronaut's stress and wellbeing.
