Ice Bucket Challenge returns in 2025 with a new cause
After more than 10 years, the Ice Bucket Challenge is back. But this time, it's for a different cause.
The viral challenge that benefited ALS is returning in 2025 to raise money for Active Minds, a nonprofit that carries the mission of mobilizing youth and young adults to transform mental health norms across society.
The revival was brought about by a group of students at the University of South Carolina to benefit Active Minds.
"The majority of mental health conditions are diagnosed, are happening to young people. It's students in college and high school," Brett Curtis, the director of community fundraising with Active Minds said. "Active Minds has found actually that 70% of youth and adults don't know how to speak with a friend about mental health. It's something that deserves to have recognition and conversations every day. The data shows us that 50% of all Americans will face a mental health condition in our lifetime."
Aaron Ellis was just 4-years-old when the challenge went viral in 2014 to raise awareness for ALS. He said it helped educate him about mental health.
"At first, I didn't know anything about it. And then once I got tagged, I started reading about it. And then later on that day, I just, I just did it," he said.
While the Ice Bucket Challenge trend is fun, he said its message speaks volumes.
"I write through a journal. Sometimes, you know, I play basketball, so I'll use that as an outlet," Ellis said. "I talk to my parents sometimes about whatever I'm going through. So that's the best way that I go through that."

About 10.9 million Americans would lose health insurance coverage under the President Donald Trump's tax cut bill that cleared the House but faces a tough test in the Senate, a new analysis shows. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office said about 10.9 million Americans would lose health insurance coverage through 2034 under the bill, including 1.4 million undocumented residents who get coverage through state-funded programs. But it would also deliver tax cuts of $3.75 trillion, and the federal deficit would increase nearly $2.4 trillion over the next decade. Health analysts said if the Medicaid changes as well as tweaks to the Affordable Care Act marketplace clear Congress, the effects on health insurance coverage would be significant. The CBO earlier estimated nearly 4 million people would lose health insurance coverage through 2034 if Congress did not extend sweetened COVID-19 pandemic-era tax credits that have made ACA plans more affordable for consumers. Trump's Medicaid overhaul as well as the expiration of the more generous ACA tax credit could jeopardize health insurance coverage for nearly 15 million people, said Kathy Hempstead, a senior policy officer at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. "We're making a giant U-turn here," said Hempstead. "Are we really going to be a thriving, productive society if we have a huge share of our population uninsured?" Hempstead said the uninsured might delay care and accrue more medical debt. She also said hospitals and doctors also will take a financial hit as uncompensated care rises. "There's going to be a big hit on on the health care economy as people stop getting care and start trying to get care that they can't pay for," Hempstead said. Letters: He overdosed after being turned away by S.F. drug treatment center. Mother seeks answers
Jonathan Martin, my son, overdosed after he was turned away from HealthRight360's detox facility on Aug. 27, 2024. Jonathan was desperately ill and seeking help. He died alone early the next morning. Jonathan's death was the subject of a Chronicle story ('He overdosed waiting for help. Why did S.F.'s largest drug treatment center provider turn him away?' San Francisco, Feb. 27). When the story was published, I sent a letter to Mayor Daniel Lurie, District Attorney Brooke Jenkins, the chiefs of the Department of Public Health and relevant agencies, HealthRight360 CEO Vitka Eisen and every member of the Board of Supervisors, hoping to find out why my son was turned away. I wanted to understand what prevented him from receiving the services he so urgently needed. I have still not received a single response, explanation or even a note of condolence from any of these officials. If the people who oversee drug treatment in the city will not answer a grieving mother, who will give my family answers? Citizens of San Francisco: You voted these people into office.
