Pair guilty of cutting down Sycamore Gap tree
May 9 (UPI) -- Two men could soon receive as many as 10 years in prison after being found guilty of cutting down an iconic British tree.
Authorities in Northumberland County announced Friday that Defendants Daniel Michael Graham and Adam Carruthers have been convicted of having chopped down the Sycamore Gap tree and to have caused damage to Hadrian's Wall.
The tree had grown in a dip on Hadrian's Wall in Northumberland for over 100 years but was felled in September of 2023.
"We often hear references to acts of mindless vandalism, but that term has never been more relevant than today in describing the actions of those individuals," Northumberland Superintendent of Police Kevin Waring said at a press conference Friday,
"At no point, have the two men given an explanation as why they targeted the tree, and there never could be a justifiable one."
Graham and Carruthers were each convicted of two counts of criminal damage.
Prosecutors said the pair had conducted what they called "mindless thuggery" for fun, but once they realized there was a public backlash both were afraid to confess.
Both were taken back into custody after the verdict for their "own protection," and will be sentenced in July.
The tree was planted in the late 1800s with the expectation it would be a landmark, as it grew out of Hadrian's Wall, which was built by the Roman army in the year 122. It created a unique visual as it stood tall between two hills from the historic wall, which is also a World Heritage Site.
The two men cut the tree down with a chainsaw in the dark of night.
Chief Crown Prosecutor for Crown Prosecution Service Northeast Gale Gilchrist said in a press conference Friday that the two men exchanged messages the next day after they cut down the tree, and reveled "in the public outcry they had caused."
She added that "The international reaction of disapproval and anger following the destruction at Sycamore Gap illustrates how keenly the public has felt the loss of this beloved sight."

June 8 (UPI) -- Colombian police have arrested a teenage boy in connection with Saturday's shooting of far-right presidential candidate Miguel Uribe. Uribe, a 39-year-old senator, was shot while he addressed his supporters during a campaign event in a park in Bogotá, the Colombian Attorney General's Office said in a statement Sunday. He was hit twice and remains in intensive care. Two other people were also injured, and police arrested a 15-year-old who was carrying a 9mm Glock pistol. Footage shared on social media appears to show when Uribe was shot, causing his followers to flee in panic. Fundación Santa Fe Bogotá, the hospital where Uribe was airlifted Saturday, said in a statement Sunday that he was admitted to the emergency room in critical condition. "After all the evaluations by various specialties, he was immediately taken to surgery to perform the initial damage control," the hospital said. "Once the neurosurgical and left thigh procedures were completed, he was transferred to intensive care for postoperative stabilization. His condition is of the utmost seriousness and the prognosis is reserved." The government of left-wing President Gustavo Petro, who is term-limited and cannot run for reelection, condemned the attack in a statement and expressed solidarity with Uribe. "The National Government categorically and forcefully rejects the attack that Senator Miguel Uribe Turbay was the victim of in the last few hours," the statement said. "This act of violence is an attack not only against the personal integrity of the senator, but also against democracy, freedom of thought and the legitimate exercise of politics in Colombia." Petro's government called peace, coexistence and respect for differences the "fundamental pillars" of a democratic society. Prosecutors said they were considering the shooting an attack on the "democratic participation" in the country, and Attorney General Luz Adriana Camargo Garzón expressed her alarm at the seriousness of the attack and urged for political unity in the country "to shield the electoral process." She said her office would investigate the shooting with the National Police.

Moscow temporarily closes airports as Ukraine targets Russia with drones
June 8 (UPI) -- Ukraine targeted Russia with another drone strike on Sunday, causing two airports serving Moscow and a third nearby to temporarily close. Russia's Federal Agency for Air Transport said in a statement that restrictions had been put in place and later lifted at Moscow's Vnukovo and Domodedovo airports, as well as at the Kaluga airport about a hundred miles southwest of the capital. "The restrictions were introduced to ensure the safety of civil aircraft flights," the agency said. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said on Telegram that Russia had shot down multiple drones that had flown towards the city overnight. "Emergency services specialists are working at the site of the falling debris," Sobyanin said. The Russian Defense Ministry said on Telegram that it intercepted and destroyed 61 Ukrainian drones over the Moscow region and the regions of Bryansk, Belgorod, Kaluga, Tula, Orel, Kursk, and Crimea. It later said another three were destroyed over the Belgorod, Bryansk and Tula regions. The strikes came after Tula regional governor Dmitry Milyaev said on Telegram on Saturday that a drone crashed into the Azot chemical plant in Novomoskovsk and caused a fire, which was later put out. He said two people had been injured. Andriy Kovalenko, the head of the Ukrainian National Security and Defense Council's Counter-Disinformation Center, said on Telegram that the Azot plant "is one of the key links in the Russian military-industrial complex." "It is here that explosives are manufactured, including TNT, which is used in artillery shells, aircraft bombs and missiles," Kovalenko alleged. "After the start of the full-scale invasion of Russia, the enterprise was put on wartime mode. Azot works closely with companies that manufacture shells, UAV hulls, and remote mining equipment." Meanwhile, Russia praised the efforts of its own drone strikes Sunday, saying on Telegram that it had used drones to strike a MaxxPro armored vehicle operated by "Ukrainian militants" in the South Donetsk direction as well as to destroy an ammunition depot and in the Zaporizhia region. On Saturday, Russia conducted a large-scale attack on the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv, killing multiple people as the death toll continued to grow, according to Kharkiv Mayor Igor Terekhov. The latest escalations in the war come amid a stalled prisoner exchange deal. Both sides have blamed each other for delays in reaching a deal.
