Highland tourist shocked by 'vile racism' at mount Suilven bothy

An Australian tourist has taken to social media to express his shock over the amount of 'blatant, vile racism' he witnessed in Scotland.
Samuel Abdilla, a tourist from Adelaide, Australia shared his outrage on the Mountain Bothies Association Facebook page.
Attached was an image of racist graffiti he had found while staying at a bothy at Suilven mountain in the Highlands.
The graffiti said: 'If you're black, sleep outside with the other animals, you are not welcome in Scotland.'
It also included Nazi symbols and the letters KKK.
The Australian tourist removed the graffiti, changing the last part of the message to read 'Welcome to Scotland'.
In the post, Samuel said: 'Was pretty shocked to come from overseas to Scotland and see the amount of blatant, vile racism that was around the place.
'An example was this graffiti in Sulieag Bothy. We did our best to scratch it off and tried to make a little better and welcoming!
'Despite this we did have a wonderful stay in a beautiful location underneath Mount Suilven.'
Responding to the post, Simon Birch, chairman of the Mountain Bothies Association said: 'I was very shocked to see this graffiti in one of the bothies maintained by the MBA.
'This is very unusual – indeed it's the first time that I've heard of such disgraceful graffiti in any bothy.
'The MBA totally opposes any form of racism or discrimination. We will take action to erase the graffiti.'
Members of the public also shared their outrage on the group. With many emphasising the Bothy Code of respect.
David Bird said: 'Disgraceful. There is no place for those sentiments, they do not represent the views of the vast majority of Scots, and others who use Bothies.'
Sarah Ai said: 'As a Scot that graffiti doesn't reflect my views. Thanks for removing this.'
While Dean Souter added: 'That's horrific. I've never seen any racial slurs in the bothies I've visited so far thankfully. Thank you for removing it. There's no place for this and I hope this doesn't deter you from future visits.'

Holocaust denier who fled to Scotland back on trial

The 56-year-old was arrested in November 2022 following a two-year search for his whereabouts led by France's Central Office for the Fight against Crimes against Humanity and Hate Crimes, which began after the memorial of Oradour-sur-Glane, where Nazi troops killed and destroyed an entire village in June of 1944, was vandalised by graffiti which read 'Reynouard is right'. His arrest came after a domestic warrant issued by a French court regarding seven videos made between September 2019 and April 2020, including one where he allegedly described the Nazi atrocities as 'crude slanders' and another where he spoke of 'the Jewish problem'. The alleged offences included 'public trivialisation of a war crime' and 'public challenge to the existence of crimes against humanity committed during the Second World War'. Vincent Reynouard was arrested in Anstruther in November, 2022 (Image: Herald Scotland) Holocaust denial has been a criminal offence in France since 1990 and Reynouard has been convicted on previous occasions, including being handed prison sentences in November 2020 and January 2021. His convictions date back as far as 1991 when he was sentenced for distributing leaflets denying the existence of the gas chambers among high school students. Reynouard was handed over to French authorities in February last year after spending 15 months on remand at HMP Edinburgh. Back in March this year, Reynouard was sentenced to 12 months in prison at the Judicial Court of Paris after being found guilty of denying war crimes, denying crimes against humanity and inciting racial hatred. He was also ordered by the court to pay €10,000 in damages to associations including French organisation LICRA (The International League against Racism and Anti-Semitism) and the Jewish Observatory of France. The public prosecutor had originally requested an 18-month prison sentence and a €15,000 fine. Responding to the sentencing at the time, a spokesperson for Campaign Against Antisemitism told The Herald: 'Vincent Reynouard is a despicable Holocaust-denier who has repeatedly been convicted by French courts. "We are pleased that, following our previous success in having him deported from the UK to face justice in France, Mr Reynouard has been jailed. Now, he will be forced to face the consequences of his hatred behind bars—where he belongs.' Now The Herald can reveal that Reynouard stood trial at the Judicial Court of Paris at the end of May charged with "contesting crimes against humanity". The charges relate to allegations he made statements denying the occurrence of the Holocaust in a five-minute video clip promoting his latest book. Vincent Reynouard's convictions date back as far as 1991 (Image: Getty) Reports in France say a verdict on the charges - for which French prosecutors are requesting a minimum sentence of eight months imprisonment and a €5,000 euro fine - will be returned on July 11. In June last year, The Herald revealed that Reynouard hosted a pro-Nazi lecture in the southern French city of Perpignan just weeks after his extradition from Scotland. The lecture was broadcast online by French neo-Nazi website Jeune Nation - named after the most prominent French neo-fascist movement of the 1950s - and appeared in full on YouTube before being removed for violating the video sharing platform's terms of service. Screengrabs from the lecture, posted on extremist online platform Gab, showed Reynouard reading from a lectern in front of a flag for fascist pan-European alliance APF. Billed as 'a fascinating presentation that re-establishes the facts and offers a completely different vision of history', Reynouard's lecture on 'The challenging politics of revisionism' had among its list of 'discussed subjects' such topics as 'The invention of National Socialist crimes to cover up Allied war crimes', 'Enlisting youth against anti-fascism' and 'The question of gas chambers'. Reynouard was then due to give a follow-up lecture on Nazism at an event in Paris some weeks later but it was shut down by the Parisian authorities. Shortly after his arrest in Scotland in 2022, Reynouard said he expected to spend at least 'five years or more' in prison should he be extradited back to France. In a letter from his prison cell addressed to French far-right weekly magazine Rivarol, seen by The Herald, Reynouard wrote: 'Back in France, I will serve several prison sentences for 'disputing crimes against humanity'. 'In total, these sentences exceed 24 months (29 months to be exact). There will undoubtedly be other convictions for the same reason, because since my exile in Great Britain, in June 2015, I have published many revisionist videos likely to fall under the Gayssot law [which makes it an offence in France to question the existence or size of the category of crimes against humanity as defined in the London Charter of 1945]. 'Several are not time-barred, either having been published less than a year ago or already being sued. Therefore, I expect to stay in prison for five years or more.'

Around 18 schools in Scotland will reintroduce single-sex facilities in the wake of the Supreme Court ruling in April that a woman is defined by biological sex. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 1 Schools across Scotland will reintroduce single-sex facilities following April's Supreme Court ruling Credit: PA This then meant that guidance around toilets, changing rooms and other facilities had to be reviewed to exclude trans people where single-sex services are provided. Now, schools in Aberdeenshire, Argyll and Bute, Scottish Borders and Shetland will create separate bathrooms for boys and girls. It comes after the Scottish government said that local authorities have a statutory responsibility for the school estate, including the provision of toilets. The majority of schools in Scotland offer both single-sex and gender-neutral toilets. But data obtained by BBC Scotland News revealed that 52 schools across 11 council areas have only gender-neutral toilets. Ten of these are located in Shetland, which now plans to add separate provisions. Scottish Borders, Aberdeenshire and Argyll and Bute councils are also following suit. The rules around gender provision in school toilets have not been updated since the School Premises (General Requirements and Standards) (Scotland) Regulations 1967 came into force. Seven councils are yet to confirm whether their schools will comply with the ruling. Dumfries and Galloway Council's legal team is reviewing its position. Landmark UK Supreme Court rules 'woman' means biological female in humiliating defeat for SNP Meanwhile, City of Edinburgh Council is "considering what changes need to be made" with an update expected this summer. Five other councils - Clackmannanshire, East Ayrshire, North Ayrshire, Midlothian and Perth and Kinross - all confirmed that they had at least one school in which offered no single-sex facilities. They did not confirm whether changes would be made. South Ayrshire, Moray, Stirling and South Lanarkshire councils said none of their schools had any gender-neutral toilets.

Inside ‘hedonistic' downfall of plumber whose £11m lottery jackpot cost him his life after blowing fortune in 3 years

Josh left school when he was in Year 10 after he was severely bullied LOTTO LOSS Inside 'hedonistic' downfall of plumber whose £11m lottery jackpot cost him his life after blowing fortune in 3 years Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) LOTTERY winner Joshua Winslet was found dead in his home after his £11million prize caused his life to spiral out of control. The Australian plumber was just 22 years old when he landed the fortune in 2017, but he blew it all in just three years after he was crippled by addiction. In 2022, he died at home from health complications caused by excessive drug use. His death was not reported by New Zealand or Australian press at the time. His tragic end came shortly after he was arrested and sentenced to three years and nine months in prison for supplying drugs and possessing a firearm. A friend of Josh spoke of his death and told the MailOnline: "It was such a shock and absolutely devastating, but sadly a lot of us were so worried this is what it was coming to." Looking back at his lottery win, she said: "When I found out he won through the grapevine, I thought, 'Oh, wow, that's extraordinary.' "I was so happy for him. Out of everyone from our school, and after all the bullying he copped, he deserved it more than anyone," she added. Another said how he called her and her boyfriend to break the news of his Powerball winnings. She said that she initially thought he was joking, but after he sent her a screenshot of his Lotto app, she realised he was being serious. But how did the hardworking tradie's life take such a drastic turn? Lottery player 'illegally' banned from taking $83.5m win over loophole even though she played by the rules, lawyer says Josh was living on New Zealand's South Island at the time and had suffered severe bullying over his 'physical deformities' that were caused by Duane syndrome and Goldenhar syndrome. Duane syndrome stops the eye muscles from developing properly, which affects eye movement. Goldenhar syndrome causes abnormalities in the formation of the bones in the face and head. It can also cause spinal issues and benign cysts to form on the eye, as well as impacting internal organs. He'd had a string of surgeries as a child to treat the syndromes. Josh was also born with a singular horseshoe-shaped kidney and an irregular heartbeat, stopping him from playing contact sports. The torment inflicted on him by his peers was so severe that when he was in Year 10 he left school and studied at Adelaide University Senior College in South Australia. He studied for around six months before leaving to do a plumbing apprenticeship. When he was 20, he moved to New Zealand's South Island to look for work. Around this time, he used the last £9 ($19) in his bank account to buy a last-minute ticket for the Powerball draw and won £11million ($22milion). But the cash began to burn a hole in his pocket, and he soon started splashing it on a-class drugs. In 2020, cops raided the "party house" and found an unlicensed firearm Mauser handgun and ammunition hidden in his bathroom. A horde of illegal substances, including 28.3 grams of MDMA and 2.27g of cocaine, was also seized. Investigators received a tip-off the lottery winner was allegedly manufacturing drugs at the property. Josh, who was 27 at the time, pleaded guilty to supplying MDMA and possessing a firearm without a licence. He was sentenced to three years and nine months, with a non-parole period of 18 months. The sentence was suspended on a two-year good behaviour bond, with supervision. Shocking images released by South Australia's District Court showed the inside of his trashed New Port mansion at the time. Empty bottles of booze, bongs, bags of MDMA, cocaine and marijuana appeared to be littered around the bachelor pad. Nitrous oxide canisters, cigarettes and half-drunk glasses of wine were also seen strewn across a marble table. Another snap showed a large bowl filled with a mystery white powder inside his fridge, alongside a pack of Red Bull cans and beer boxes. Chaotic jumbles of rubbish and clothes were left dumped on the floor in an "appalling" state. Judge Heath Barklay said that Josh had "lost motivation" for life and had adopted a "hedonistic lifestyle". He said: "Because of the money that you had won, there was no motivation on your part to work or do anything other than enjoy yourself. "You had lots of money so you could afford to buy large amounts of drugs, which you would use yourself and supply to your so-called friends from time to time." 8 His house was littered with bongs, empty bottles of booze and MDMA Credit: Courts SA 8 A Mauser handgun and ammunition was hidden in his bathroom Credit: Courts SA 8 A horde of illegal substances, including 28.3 grams of MDMA and 2.27g of cocaine, was also seized Credit: Courts SA 8 He was just 22 years old when he won the huge cash prize in 2017 Credit: Courts SA 8 He was sentenced to three years and nine months in prison Credit: Courts SA 8 Josh was horrendously bullied at school and left to do an apprenticeship Credit: Courts SA If you are affected by any of the issues raised in this article, please call the Samaritans for free on 116123.
